He has a history of domestic abuse with both the mothers of his children and his daughters. One of the officers who responded to a call about an active shooter inside the building shot and killed Villi, authorities said. “We are in absolute shock and utter devastation at the events that have transpired,” Villi’s children said in their statement. The children, who didn’t provide their names, said they have been estranged from him for more than five years. According to court documents, at least two condominium managers quit because of him, and security guards quit or changed shifts to avoid him.

Rio Tinto’s Mongolian purgatory is finally over

LONDON, Dec 9 (Reuters Breakingviews) - Finally, something has gone right for Rio Tinto (RIO.L) in Mongolia. Rio boss Jakob Stausholm squeaked home with 60.5% of minority votes cast, just over the 50% threshold. It’s a massive win for Stausholm and Rio copper boss Bold Baatar. Oyu Tolgoi still needs more than $3.5 billion of funding. Instead, Rio is handing them C$43 per share in cash – a 70% premium to the price in March.
Buying out the Turquoise Hill minority shareholders is Stausholm’s other initiative. Imagine minority shareholders vote down the offer, but Rio then has Turquoise Hill issue fresh equity. With minimal net debt, the miner had enough cash to buy more Turquoise Hill equity. Rio shareholders soon will see just how well Stausholm plays. Pentwater Capital Management and SailingStone Capital Partners, which own respective 15.2% and 2.2% stakes in Canada-based Turquoise Hill, have resisted the offers.
As House Speaker Nancy Pelosi said herself, quoting scripture on the House floor Thursday: “For everything there is a season — a time for every purpose under heaven.”For Pelosi, the season to be leader of House Democrats has passed. She’ll continue to represent San Francisco while serving as an invaluable source of guidance and resolve for the next generation of House Democratic leaders. At 82, Pelosi is a historic figure, of course: the first female House speaker and one of the strongest speakers, if not the strongest, that America has ever seen. Yet as a minority in a GOP-run House, Democrats won’t be able to rack up accomplishments like they did in the last two years. There were calls for Pelosi to step aside in 2010 when Democrats lost 60 House seats — a true wipeout.
China reopening hope puts wind in Alibaba sails

Just ask China's $220 billion e-commerce giant Alibaba (9988.HK), whose New York stock has rallied by a third this month despite tepid performance from its annual Singles Day shopping festival and so-so quarterly results. Revenue from the domestic commerce unit, accounting for nearly two-thirds of Alibaba's top line, fell 1% year-on-year, to $19 billion. Boss Daniel Zhang's cost cuts are paying off, though: the overall adjusted EBITDA margin improved three percentage points to 21%. Zhang's messaging on China's gradual reopening probably resonated with investors more. Shares of Alibaba, rivals JD.com (9618.HK) and Pinduoduo (PDD.O) and other Chinese stocks jumped, too.
The respective chief executives of $139 billion Philip Morris International (PM.N) and $95 billion Rio Tinto (RIO.L) are attempting takeovers that are central to their strategies. Olczak, who needs 90% of shareholders to accept in order to automatically de-list the company, initially faced opposition to his $16 billion offer. The mining giant asked for the postponement at the request of Quebec’s financial regulator, Turquoise Hill said. Two key investors in Turquoise Hill have agreed to withhold their votes on the bid, with their final deal dependent on Canadian arbitration. Turquoise Hill shares closed at C$41.6 on Nov. 4.
Others have ground to a halt, sending companies back to technology that is less sci-fi, but can be deployed more quickly and cost-effectively. Some companies are satisfied their robots are doing the job. The perils of the outdoors are a big problem for delivery robots, in particular. Some people have also raised concerns that delivery robots could block wheelchair access on sidewalks or otherwise get in the way of humans, leading local authorities to limit or prohibit their use. Toronto, for example, last December banned delivery robots.
European banks’ perfect moment will prove fleeting

LONDON, Oct 26 (Reuters Breakingviews) - Europe’s big banks are enjoying a perfect moment. That dream scenario allowed Deutsche Bank (DBKGn.DE), Barclays (BARC.L) and Banco Santander (SAN.MC) to report chunky profits in third-quarter results released on Wednesday. Barclays’ revenue from trading fixed-income securities, currencies, and commodities in the first nine months of 2022 was 63% higher year-on-year. Deutsche, Barclays and Santander have slashed their group-wide stock of loan-loss provisions since 2020, and in the latter two cases they’re even below pre-pandemic levels. Deutsche Bank and Barclays were down 0.5% and 0.9% respectively.
CNN —Video game purists expecting a faithful adaptation of the original Nintendo game might be somewhat surprised by first teaser for the new “Super Mario Bros. Movie,” which debuted on Thursday. This is also when the game’s memorable music is finally heard, albeit briefly. The CGI-animated film, from Nintendo and Illumination, features several other big name stars, including Charlie Day as Mario’s brother Luigi, Anya Taylor-Joy as Princess Peach, Keegan-Michael Key as Toad and Seth Rogen as Donkey Kong. The last time the iconic video game was translated into a feature-length studio film was almost 30 years ago, with the ill-begotten 1993 release of the live-action “Super Mario Bros.,” starring Bob Hoskins and John Leguizamo. The new movie is due to hit theaters on April 7, 2023.
“Hocus Pocus 2” should benefit from that dynamic, delivering a breezy sequel – 29 years later – that should provide go-down-easy Halloween viewing for families in the less-demanding confines of Disney+. Then again, this kind of movie hardly needs to reinvent the cauldron, representing more of a cut-and-paste job. While the not-too-scary hijinks are acceptable for kids, those scenes will likely deliver more of a kick for parents who caught the movie way back when, helping turn it into a Halloween favorite. By that measure, “Hocus Pocus 2” finds what amounts to the streaming sweet spot, feeling just big enough, but not too big. “Hocus Pocus 2” premieres September 30 on Disney+.
How Italy could tip into a tailspin

Giorgia Meloni, leader of the far-right Brothers of Italy party, speaks during a rally in Duomo square ahead of the Sept. 25 snap election, in Milan, Italy, September 11, 2022. Italy will probably muddle through under Meloni, the leader of the Brothers of Italy, which opinion polls suggest will be the largest party after this Sunday’s election. Nobody wants Italy to go into a tailspin and drag down countries such as France and Spain, which also have high levels of sovereign debt. She might think the EU would still keep financial support flowing to Italy as it wouldn’t have the guts for a confrontation. But if the ECB then refused to buy Italian debt, and if neither side blinked, there would be a blow-up.
LONDON, Sept 13 (Reuters Breakingviews) - Rio Tinto’s (RIO.L), (RIO.AX) increasingly epic minority buyout saga may have a bit further to run. Rio only needs a simple majority of Turquoise’s minorities to simplify its Mongolian operations by controlling Turquoise outright. Rio can point to recessionary fears that have dampened the copper price to $3.7 a pound of late, and the project’s ongoing and significant investment requirements.
