CNN —Allegations that three boys gang-raped a 12-year-old Jewish girl in northern France have triggered an outcry over surging antisemitism in the country, a key issue in the looming French parliamentary elections this month. The Nanterre prosecutor’s office announced Wednesday that it has launched an inquiry into the alleged “aggravated rape” of a minor, after receiving “reports from a 12-year-old girl” of the incident on June 15. The third boy has been placed under “assisted witness” status in relation to the alleged rape, the prosecutor added. The alleged attack took place as the girl tried to return home after meeting a friend. To the Editor:Re “Less Marriage, Less Sex, Less Agreement,” by Nicholas Kristof (column, May 30):Women’s discontent with marriage is not new; it just became more obvious because the availability of both birth control and abortion freed women to express their discontent by either not marrying or not remarrying. Recently the number of women who are choosing not to marry has reached a level that is alarming to those who become anxious when the power of traditional hierarchies weakens. So it’s not surprising that a prominent feature of the MAGA movement is an effort to bully women back into dependency by appointing Supreme Court judges willing to revoke their access to abortion and perhaps also birth control. This bullying gets dressed up in religious rhetoric that ignores the obvious truth that our freedom of religion must always include freedom from others’ religious convictions.

Now, a new study that looked at 5 million stars in the Milky Way galaxy suggests that seven candidates could potentially be hosting Dyson spheres — a finding that’s attracting scrutiny and alternate theories. If Dyson spheres really exist, what could they be used for? “Freeman Dyson said that we should dismantle Jupiter — the whole planet (for the raw materials).”That supercolossal scale probably means that Dyson spheres, if they exist at all, are very rare. “However, contamination by circumstellar debris disks, which mimic Dyson Sphere infrared signatures, remains a concern,” he added in an email. However, he added, the radiation fingerprint of the seven Dyson sphere candidates might be explained by natural phenomena as well.
