On the surface, Thailand appears to be stuck in a never-ending cycle. Elections are held in which voters voice increasingly clear demands for change, only for those to be denied by the royalist old guard that has dominated my country for generations. Each of the past several elections, going back to 2005, have resulted in the winning party either being denied its right to form a government, overthrown in a military coup or otherwise removed from office. So when Thailand’s Constitutional Court last week ordered the dissolution of the country’s most popular political party — the pro-reform Move Forward Party, which won last year’s national election on a platform of curbing royal prerogatives — it seemed like déjà vu, the latest chapter in a normalized process of political stagnation. The court decision is not a sign of the strength of the conservative establishment, but of its weakness; a last-gasp attempt by the old guard to cling to an outdated status quo despite demands for change by millions of politically literate young Thais.

New York CNN —The Federal Reserve is all but certain to hold interest rates steady at its meeting this week. That’s why Torsten Slok, Apollo Global’s chief economist, is maintaining his prior forecast that the Fed won’t cut rates at all this year. “There are still two more CPI releases before the September 18 [Fed] meeting, so we have to wait and see if the downtrend in inflation continues,” he told CNN. Fed officials have signaled that September will be when they finally lower interest rates. The difference between a few months for that initial cut “really doesn’t matter unless there’s some big shock that hits the economy in that time,” Fed Governor Christopher Waller said earlier this month.

The adviser, Timothy Pearson, also once sexually abused a female pastor, manipulated her into having sex with him and was abusive during the encounter about 10 years ago — prompting her to file a criminal complaint against him, the suit says. The lawsuit is the fourth action this year to accuse Mr. Pearson of sexual harassment. Like two of the others, it was brought by a male police official who said he was disgusted by Mr. Pearson’s treatment of women at a small unit Mr. Adams created to improve government efficiency. Mr. Pearson declined to comment, referring a reporter to a City Hall spokeswoman and a lawyer the city has hired to represent him.
