The only thing yet to slow down Commanders rookie quarterback Jayden Daniels in his rookie season? The rookie left the first quarter of Washington’s game against Carolina with what the Commanders called a rib injury that left him questionable to return. Daniels was visibly frustrated, taking off his helmet and throwing it to the turf. Daniels, off to one of the best statistical starts to a career by a quarterback in NFL history, had enjoyed another sensational start prior to the injury, rushing for 46 yards on the Commanders’ first play from scrimmage. 2 pick in last year's NFL Draft, Daniels has thrown for 1,404 yards and six touchdowns with only two interceptions.

Cleveland Browns quarterback Deshaun Watson was carted off the field with an Achilles injury during the second quarter against the Cincinnati Bengals. He was running a quarterback draw when his right leg appeared to buckle and he hit the ground. He entered Sunday ranked 31st and last among all QBs in quarterback rating. Entering Sunday, the Browns’ passing offense was last in yards per game, yards per attempt and had suffered more sacks than any other team. Even if the Browns were to release Watson after this season, they would still owe him $92 million.

But now, as Trump lines up against DeSantis in a battle over a high-profile ballot initiative to legalize marijuana in Florida, the governor’s old ally, Jeff Roe, is working against him. The relationship, however, soured after DeSantis’ presidential ambitions went up in flames. In June, a Fox News survey found that 66% of Florida voters were for marijuana legalization while just 32% were against it — and that came before Trump said he would support the marijuana initiative. So whenever you’re going against that much money, it’s obviously a tough fight.”Jeff Roe led Never Back Down, the main super PAC backing DeSantis' presidential primary bid. “It’s obviously a different opinion than [DeSantis] has.”Other prominent DeSantis supporters are also in potentially difficult political positions.

By Zack Rosenblatt, Mike DeFabo and Lauren MerolaPittsburgh Steelers quarterback Russell Wilson posted a strong stat line Sunday against the New York Jets at Acrisure Stadium, in part thanks to star wide receiver George Pickens. Russell Wilson passes first testWhen Tomlin pivoted, sitting Fields in favor for a healthy Wilson, the decision was sure to have a microscope on it. Wilson found his rhythm as the game went on, showing great chemistry with George Pickens. Wilson and the Steelers capitalized on the miscue, when the QB hit Pickens for a touchdown to cap a four-play, 54-yard drive. That set the stage for Wilson to sneak the ball in, giving the Steelers an eight-point lead.

As the garbage came down, Texas coach Steve Sarkisian and then other members of the Texas team walked to the corner of the end zone waving their hands and asking students to stop. They were unable to go sideline-to-sideline or downhill as Georgia met Texas with force every step of the way. The second half got dicey, with Georgia giving up two touchdowns on relatively short fields, one after the controversial interception/overturned pass interference, the other after Georgia for some reason squib-kicked the second half kickoff. In the second half, Ewers returned and led a touchdown drive to open the third quarter. Mykel Williams forced a second Ewers fumble with 10:23 left in the game, thwarting a Texas drive in Georgia territory.

That changed in 2023, when Texas went 12-2 in coach Steve Sarkisian’s third season and appeared in the College Football Playoff for the first time. Like Texas, Georgia spent much of the last 30 years boasting a past national championship and a campus in a recruiting-rich part of the country, with little modern success to show for it. The quarterback of the Bulldogs’ back-to-back championship teams was not a former high-star recruit but he did grow up in Georgia. In the decade before Sarkisian’s hiring, Texas recruiting classes finished with an average rank of 10.8 in the country; in three recruiting classes under Sarkisian, Texas has averaged a ranking of 4.6. In the eyes of Texas fans, the Longhorns won’t qualify as fully back until they win the program’s first football national championship since 2006.

The Game: Denver (3-3) at New Orleans (2-4)The Storyline: Denver coach Sean Payton returns to New Orleans for the first time since 2022, when he stepped down after 15 seasons as the Saints’ coach, a run that included the franchise’s only Super Bowl title. Payton has downplayed the effect the emotions of the visit will have on the game itself, as has Dennis Allen, the longtime Saints assistant who succeeded Payton. New Orleans has converted 47% of its third-down opportunities, the NFL’s third-highest rate, while the Broncos rank second worst at 25%.
