In 2020, a few months before the last election, former President Donald J. Trump’s niece, Mary Trump, published a book about her uncle and how awful and psychologically warped she found him to be. At the time, her brother, Fred C. Trump III, put out a statement slamming his sister for such treachery. The New York Times obtained a copy. Fred and Mary Trump are the children of Fred Trump Jr., Donald’s older brother who struggled with alcoholism and died of a heart attack in 1981, when he was 42. Fred Trump, 61, describes himself as fairly close to his uncle.

Biden Plans to Address the Nation on Wednesday Night

President Biden plans to address the nation from the Oval Office on Wednesday night to explain his decision to bow out of the presidential campaign and outline how he wants to use his final six months in office. Mr. Biden is scheduled to return to Washington on Tuesday afternoon for the first time since announcing his withdrawal on social media on Sunday. He spent six days at his vacation house in Rehoboth Beach, Del., recovering from Covid and recalibrating his political future. Mr. Biden has not been seen in public since late Wednesday, when he disembarked from Air Force One at Dover Air Force Base in Delaware looking frail and uncertain. The White House physician said on Monday that after days of treatment with Paxlovid, the president was recovering well and that his symptoms were “almost completely resolved.”

Ahead of President Biden’s planned prime-time address from the Oval Office on Wednesday night, former President Donald J. Trump and his campaign sent a letter to ABC, NBC and CBS on Tuesday demanding that Mr. Trump be given equal airtime. Mr. Biden is expected to address his decision to end his re-election campaign and outline his plans for the rest of his time in office. In a social media post, he wrote that he would discuss “what lies ahead, and how I will finish the job for the American people.”But in the letter, which was obtained by The New York Times, the Trump campaign’s general counsel, David Warrington, asserted in advance of Mr. Biden’s speech that it would most likely address Mr. Biden’s endorsement of Vice President Kamala Harris as his successor. Based on that assumption, Mr. Warrington wrote, “it appears that President Biden’s speech will not be a bona fide news event, but rather, a prime-time campaign commercial.” Citing the Federal Communications Commission’s “equal time” rule, Mr. Warrington insisted that Mr. Trump be given similar time on air, arguing that Mr. Biden’s address was a “campaign speech,” even as Mr. Biden is no longer technically a candidate for the presidency.

Former President Donald J. Trump, who often calls himself the staunchest ally of Israel to ever sit in the Oval Office, will meet with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu of Israel on Friday in Palm Beach, Fla., Mr. Trump said on Tuesday. “Looking forward to welcoming Bibi Netanyahu at Mar-a-Lago,” Mr. Trump wrote in a post on his social media site, referring to his private club and residence. (Mr. Trump announced three different dates: An initial post on Tuesday afternoon said he would meet with Mr. Netanyahu on Wednesday, then he deleted that post and replaced it with one saying Thursday. Mr. Netanyahu and Mr. Trump were close allies during Mr. Trump’s presidency. But their relationship became strained when the prime minister congratulated Mr. Biden on winning the 2020 presidential election.

Washington CNN —President Joe Biden will deliver a speech on his decision to drop out of the 2024 race on Wednesday. “I’m going to be on the road and I’m not going anywhere,” Biden said over the phone, his voice still hoarse from Covid. “I won’t be on the ticket, but I am still going to be fully, fully engaged. Prime-time Oval Office addresses from the president are rare. Biden is the first president in more than a generation to decide not to seek a second term.

Joe Biden’s decision to end his re-election campaign is being hailed as an act of great patriotism, of putting the national interest over individual political fortunes. Patriotism and ambition need not stand opposed; they can and should come together, as they so often do among the men and women who seek power or who seek to retain it. It is no disrespect to Joe Biden to recall that before finally deciding to end his re-election campaign, he tried hard to avoid doing so. “I believe my record as president, my leadership in the world, my vision for America’s future, all merited a second term,” he said in his Oval Office address. Only when the polling and the money started going wrong did he yield to what now seems inevitable.

The Israeli diplomat Abba Eban once remarked that “men and nations behave wisely when they have exhausted all other resources.” The line (a version of which is often misattributed to Winston Churchill) could hardly fit President Biden better. But it would also be more than a little misleading. The truth is that for months, if not years, the president, his family, and his senior advisers deceived the country about the extent of his mental deterioration. Dean Phillips, the Minnesota congressman, first saw it back in 2021, when Biden went to Capitol Hill and “had trouble articulating his own agenda,” as The Times’s Peter Baker noted this week. Phillips’s Democratic colleagues saw it, too, but said nothing.

U.S. Vice President Kamala Harris departs Air Force Two as she arrives at Pope Army Airfield to campaign in Fayetteville, North Carolina, U.S., July 18, 2024. Kevin Mohatt | ReutersA call Friday featuring Vice President Kamala Harris and about 300 major Democratic donors left many who dialed in frustrated, with one donor declaring it "ludicrous" shortly before it ended, according to two sources familiar with the call. During the call, Harris, who was asked to join the call by Biden's senior advisors, praised Biden, according to campaign officials. NBC News reached out to the Biden campaign for comment. But what angered many donors, this source said, was that during the wait — which was about 20 minutes — donors were "admonished."

Vice President Kamala Harris, who has struggled for nearly four years in President Biden’s shadow, was thrust on Sunday into the center of a remarkable political drama that could culminate with her becoming the first Black woman at the top of a major-party presidential ticket. Mr. Biden’s decision to abandon his re-election bid and endorse Ms. Harris to succeed him puts her in a powerful, but not certain, position to become the new face of the Democratic Party, charged with preventing former President Donald J. Trump from returning to the Oval Office for another four years. “Today I want to offer my full support and endorsement for Kamala to be the nominee of our party this year. Democrats — it’s time to come together and beat Trump,” Mr. Biden wrote in a social media post after he announced his decision to step aside. “Let’s do this.”Ms. Harris and her team are likely to move swiftly to try to seize that mantle even as uncertainty swirled about whether other Democrats would seek to challenge her for the nomination at the party’s convention in Chicago next month.

Instead, Biden’s campaign unraveled over the course of the next 24 days. It’s a high-risk, high-reward gamble for Democrats, resetting a campaign Biden was losing with a new nominee just 107 days before the election. Dunn and her husband, Bob Bauer, were among Biden’s debate prep team and had faced the ire of the president’s family in the aftermath of the debate. Several news outlets, including CNN, reported that Pelosi and former President Barack Obama had privately expressed concerns about the future of Biden’s campaign. That same day, ABC News reported that Schumer told Biden in their Saturday meeting that it would be best if he bowed out of the presidential race.

In the days following the debate, Biden faced growing pressure to step aside, with an increasing number of Democratic politicians urging the 81-year-old president to do so. Everyone wants Joe Biden gone. What if?’ We’re doing things the Democratic way. I went there growing up and have Proustian recollections of crispy French fries with vinegar sold on the Boardwalk. It makes me sad that Biden doesn’t see what’s inescapable: If he doesn’t walk away gracefully right now, he will likely go down as a pariah and ruin his legacy. The race for the Oval today is between two delusional, selfish, stubborn old guys, and that’s a depressing state of affairs.

Nothing President Biden did seemed to work. He delivered an angry, defensive rant on MSNBC’s “Morning Joe.” He showed foreign policy chops at a news conference. He wrote a long letter to “fellow Democrats” demanding an end to the calls for him to step aside. Mr. Biden was racing from place to place, but nothing was changing. Most spoke on the condition of anonymity to discuss one of the most difficult periods in Mr. Biden’s political life.

A call with Vice President Kamala Harris struggled to reassure major donors that there was little to worry about. More than 25 million people watched former President Trump’s speech at the Republican National Convention. The delegates in front of former President Trump were euphoric. Everyone there, from the show runners to Hulk Hogan to Melania Trump, had nailed their role in a glitzy production aimed at returning Trump to the real Oval Office. “I’d better finish strong,” Trump said, nearly 45 minutes into his acceptance speech.

U.S. President Joe Biden in the Oval Office at the White House in Washington on April 15, 2024. As President Joe Biden isolated at his beach house in Rehoboth, Delaware, on Thursday after testing positive for Covid, he faced renewed pressure from leading Democrats to drop out of the 2024 election contest against former President Donald Trump. "We're close to the end," a person close to Biden told NBC News. Biden served two terms as Obama's vice president, and the 44th president still has unrivaled influence within the Democratic party. Rep. Adam Schiff of California, the Democratic nominee for one of the state's two Senate seats, openly called for Biden to drop out of the race Wednesday.

The star is one of a binary pair, so the planet orbits the primary star, while the primary star orbits a secondary star. While Jupiter takes 4,000 Earth days to complete one orbit around the sun, hot Jupiters complete one orbit every few days. Astronomers use “eccentric” to refer to the shape of a planet’s orbit on a scale from zero to 1. “It’s a pretty extreme process in that the changes to the planet’s orbit are massive,” Millholland said. Discovering a second hot Jupiter precursor is helping astronomers to confirm the idea that high-mass gas giants transform into hot Jupiters as they migrate from eccentric to circular orbits, the researchers said.

President Joe Biden walks out of the Oval Office toward Marine One on the South Lawn of the White House in Washington, July 15, 2024. House Democrats are circulating a letter for signatures that urges the Democratic National Committee to slow down its nomination process for President Joe Biden. The letter asks the DNC to cancel its plan to hold a "virtual roll call" to officially nominate the president. Huffman is one of the several members leading the effort to rally signatures, a spokesperson for his office confirmed to CNBC. Ohio has since moved its ballot deadline to the end of August, but the DNC has maintained its expedited nomination plan.

As the aircraft carrier Dwight D. Eisenhower sailed toward Norfolk Harbor, a small cargo plane landed on the flight deck amid swirling wind and rain. After the plane jerked to a halt, Jake Sullivan, the national security adviser, and top Navy officials disembarked. While the sailors cheered, the chief of naval operations recounted the strike group’s achievements. The Eisenhower set sail from Norfolk a week after the Oct. 7 terrorist attacks in Israel, and its six-month deployment had been extended three times. Shortly after a Florida judge dismissed the classified documents case against Trump, Trump urged in a post on Truth Social on Monday that all remaining charges against him should be dropped. Without providing any details, Trump told the Post "we hear" that Biden will order the Department of Justice to drop its criminal cases against Trump. Trump and the GOP have repeatedly alleged, long before Saturday's shooting, that Biden is behind the charges against Trump. The Biden campaign quickly paused "outbound communications" and took down television advertisements in the wake of the shooting. Will 'defense of democracy' remain a core campaign issue? But after the Butler shooting, many are wondering how Biden will campaign on the issue moving forward. The uproar over the Trump assassination attempt may pause the intraparty rebellion against Biden for now, especially as he assumes his role as the leader of a nation in sudden crisis. In a nation that was already deeply divided, the core vote for both Trump and Biden was probably locked in. There can be no justification for an assassination attempt on a candidate — an assault on democracy. Many Republican politicians issued calls for calm and an easing of political rhetoric after the shooting — as did Democrats. And Johnson accompanied his calls for calm by implying that Democrats — in advancing their arguments against Trump — had somehow abetted the assassination attempt.
