Iran’s Guardian Council, a committee of 12 jurists and clerics, whittled an initial list of 80 presidential candidates down to six, disqualifying seven women and a former president and many other government officials. U.S. crude oil on Friday traded near a two-month high and is on pace for a third-straight weekly gain as fears of war between Israel and the Iran-backed militia Hezbollah grow. West Texas Intermediate hit an intraday high of $82.72 per barrel, the highest level for the U.S. benchmark since April 30. U.S. oil is up about 1.8% for the week and 6.7% for the month of June. Hezbollah could target Israel's offshore gas operations if war breaks out, and Israel could seek to hit Iranian oil facilities, according to RBC Capital Markets. A Japanese pharmaceutical company is investigating 80 deaths possibly linked to a yeast-containing supplement it sells in Japan, the country’s health ministry said Friday, in a shocking increase from an earlier revelation that is focusing attention on how supplements are regulated. The company, Kobayashi Pharmaceutical, in March had reported five deaths potentially linked to its CholesteHelp rice and red-yeast pills. In response to the sudden surge in reported deaths, Health Minister Keizo Takemi said it was “extremely regrettable” that Kobayashi Pharmaceutical had not updated the ministry sooner. The company, which is based in Osaka, had not provided new information on deaths potentially linked to CholesteHelp since March. CNN —Beryl is the first hurricane of the 2024 Atlantic season, with maximum sustained winds of 75 mph with stronger gusts, according to a 5 p.m. EST update from the National Hurricane Center. That this formed so early in the season – and in this part of the Atlantic – is a sign of the hyperactive hurricane season to come, according to research from Phil Klotzbach, a hurricane expert and research scientist at Colorado State University. An important economic measure for the Federal Reserve showed Friday that inflation during May slowed to its lowest annual rate in more than three years. Including food and energy, headline inflation was flat on the month and also up 2.6% on an annual basis. Outside of the inflation numbers, the Bureau of Economic Analysis report showed that personal income rose 0.5% on the month, stronger than the 0.4% estimate. Shelter-related costs have proven stickier than Fed officials have anticipated and have helped keep the central bank from reducing interest rates as expected this year.

Some jailbreaks require elaborate planning. Few have relied on the New York City bus system. But that system unwittingly supplied the getaway vehicle when a Rikers Island detainee made a break for it outside Bellevue Hospital Center on Wednesday night, two people with knowledge of the incident said. The detainee, James Mossetty, had been jailed since January on assault and drug charges, and he was taken earlier this month to Bellevue, where he was treated for psychiatric problems, among other things, one of the people said. On Wednesday night, just before 10 p.m., two New York City Department of Correction officers were supposed to be putting Mr. Mossetty into a van for a return trip to Rikers when he somehow escaped from the hospital’s secure loading area, the city officials said.
