Team USA's Noah Lyles took the gold in the men’s 100-meter final at the Paris Olympics — by five-thousandths of a second. Lyles, who won Sunday with a time of 9.784 seconds, came out just barely ahead of Jamaica’s Kishane Thompson (who ran in 9.789) and the U.S.’ Fred Kerley (whose time was 9.81). It raises the question: Which part of the body must cross the finish line first to earn the win? According to Olympic rules and regulations, the first athlete whose torso reaches the closest edge of the finish line is the winner. That is what earned Lyles the gold and the title of world's fastest man even though some viewers online noted that several other athletes' shoes reached the finish line first.

PARIS — Bold-talking American sprinting star Noah Lyles arrived at the Paris Olympics announcing his intentions of leaving with four gold medals. The 27-year-old from Virginia won his first Olympic gold medal Sunday by bolting to the 100-meter title in a personal-best 9.79 seconds in front of a deafening, sold-out Stade de France crowd. Lyles froze when it showed he had prevailed by one of the narrowest margins — five-thousandths of a second. Lyles is the first American to win the Olympic 100-meter since 2004. By the finish time, it was one of the hardest gold medals to earn, too.

In a most epic final, certainly, among the deepest in Olympic history, Lyles won in a photo finish. His time of 9.784 seconds in the men’s 100-meter dash was his personal best and gave the United States its first gold in 20 years. Phase 1 of Lyles’ grand plan to win Olympic gold in the 100 and 200 is complete. He’s the best in the world at it and has been for this entire Olympic cycle. Lyles finished seventh in the 100-meter final at the 2021 U.S. Olympic trials, failing to qualify for the Tokyo Games in the discipline.

“I think it was the worst pressure you could ever be put under,” British former sprinter Allan Wells, who won 100m gold at the 1980 Moscow Olympics, told CNN Sport. “You run through it in your head thousands of times – the start, the gun going off,” Wells added. “It was the worst feeling you could ever have but still be in control of what you were hoping to achieve,” said Wells, one of only three British sprinters to win 100m gold at the Olympics. The legendary Bolt, winner of three consecutive 100m gold medal between 2008 and 2016, said that he would try not to overthink things. What’s Uniting, and Dividing, Native Voters in ArizonaNative American voters were key to helping Democrats clinch Arizona in 2020. But in this election, many Native voters say they feel exhausted, disappointed and torn about how to vote. But overall it was frustration and anxiety that we heard as we talked with more than four dozen voters around Phoenix and on the Navajo Nation, the country’s largest reservation, about their concerns. Many voters felt like they had been left out of the state’s growing economy, with unemployment for Native Americans almost double the national average. Tokyo Reuters —The Japanese government ordered Toyota Motor on Wednesday to make “drastic reforms” after discovering new violations in the automaker’s vehicle certification procedures. In a so-called corrective order, the Transport Ministry said on-site inspections had uncovered widespread, intentional misconduct and irregularities in seven additional models that had not been previously disclosed. Toyota and four other vehicle makers admitted in June they had submitted either flawed or manipulated data when applying for certification of vehicles. Toyota said it was planning to resume production of these models from the beginning of September after the Transport Ministry confirmed they met compliance requirements. The ministry said six of the seven additional Toyota models with irregularities were also certified in other countries, and it had alerted overseas authorities about the issues.
