Opinion: Biden is in trouble

The theory is that, by focusing on reproductive rights, as well as other issues that have strong national support, such as fighting climate change, the Biden campaign will be able to overcome the challenge posed by the president’s low approval rating. There are also serious questions being raised about whether abortion rights are as motivating for voters as some Democrats think. But when it comes to a national election featuring two candidates, abortion may just be one of many issues, with differing political impacts, he argued. According to a New York Times/Siena College poll, former President Donald Trump is currently ahead of Biden in five out of six battleground states. With key voters saying they trust Trump more on issues including immigration, the economy and national security, Biden could be in serious trouble in Arizona, Georgia, Michigan, Nevada and Pennsylvania.

The New York Times now has more than 10 million subscribers, the company said on Wednesday, edging closer to its goal of 15 million by the end of 2027. In its third-quarter report, The New York Times Company said it had added 210,000 net digital-only subscribers in the three months through September, giving it 9.41 million along with 670,000 print subscribers. The Times Company has focused on getting subscribers to sign up for more than one of its offerings, which include the core news report, Cooking, Games, the Wirecutter review site and the sports news site The Athletic. Nearly 3.8 million of the 9.41 million digital-only subscribers are subscribed to at least two products, the company said. Meredith Kopit Levien, the company’s president and chief executive officer, said in a statement that the third-quarter results showed that The Times’s “multiproduct bundle” was performing well and would “further us down the path to building a larger, more profitable company.”

Good morning. This took a lot of gas, a lot of time and a toll on our bodies. So we laughed hard when the only good fishing we had came at the very end of the day, a few boat lengths from the marina, across from Four Sparrow Marsh near Mill Basin, Brooklyn. For dinner that night, and for you this evening: a chaat party, essentially a no-recipe recipe that Priya Krishna adapted from one in the 2020 cookbook “Chaat,” by Maneet Chauhan and Jody Eddy. It also served as a kind of rehearsal for the celebration of Diwali, the Hindu celebration of lights, on Nov. 12.

The job market or spending? The spending argument: But there have been instances in which spending weakened before the job market. “I think it starts with the perception of the labor market,” Drew Matus, chief market strategist at MetLife Investment Management, told CNN. The ticket-industry giant said it has sold a record 140 million tickets so far this year, up 17% year-over-year and has already surpassed the 121 million tickets sold in all of 2022. In the third quarter, Ticketmaster sales surged 57% to $833 million and 90 million fee-bearing tickets were sold in the period.

His X post was still at the top of the popular Wall Street Bets subreddit on Friday morning. Photo: Anna Moneymaker/Getty ImagesThis column has lamented the modern evolution of the New York Times from left-leaning journalism to edgy content for progressives—“a juicy collection of great narratives,” in the words of the Times’s former media columnist. Having decided to cater to a limited and fiercely ideological slice of the public with its flagship newspaper, the New York Times Co. then opted to look for growth in entertainment products with broader appeal. But the reaction to a New York Times column this week raises the exciting possibility that even the newspaper’s readers have consumed about all the juicy progressive narratives they can stand. It’s unclear whether this is a precise reading of liberal sentiment, but one dares to hope that the entire Democratic Party might finally be ready to evolve out of its era of radical excess. The timing could be perfect as a warning from one influential leftist suggests that many of the party’s voters still don’t realize how much their ideas will cost them.

American economic power is potent but unstable
  + stars: | 2023-09-08 | by ( Peter Thal Larsen | ) www.reuters.com   time to read: +8 min
LONDON, Sept 8 (Reuters Breakingviews) - For the past 15 years, the iPhone has been a totem of U.S. economic power. If the country is cooling on the $2.8 trillion company, it’s a potent indicator of increasingly frosty relations with the United States. Perhaps most significantly, the U.S. government realised it could use the internet to spy on adversaries and the financial system to subdue them. The tendency of capitalism to produce a handful of giant companies, many of them headquartered in the United States, helped successive administrations exert their authority. A complete severing of economic links between China and the United States is hard to imagine.

We visited four Subway in Southern California to figure out how Roark can fix the brand. So I visited four Subway stores near my Southern California home. It is one of hundreds of Subway stores that have been remodeled over the years. In 2021, The New York Times conducted its lab test and published a report stating that it found no tuna DNA in Subway tuna sandwiches. I ordered the tuna sandwich at a Subway in Santa Ana, California, an aging stand-alone store in a former adobe-style Taco Bell building.

For years, my party go-to has been Sheldon Simeon’s pan sushi dynamite, a recipe from his excellent cookbook, “Cook Real Hawai’i.” Pan sushi — or sushi bake — never fails to delight. It’s a generous sheet of sushi rice topped with fish that has been baked just long enough to marry with its sauce, placed on the table with palm-size squares of nori for D.I.Y. Naz’s recipe has the same sushi-casserole heart, but with California roll vibes. Imitation crab is mixed with cream cheese, mayo and Sriracha, baked on vinegary sushi rice, showered with furikake and topped with sliced cucumber and avocado. Naz notes that you can use canned tuna or salmon (or, indeed, real crab) instead; I can confidently confirm that sushi bake is a great use of canned salmon.

There’s no substitute for dessert at The Lemon Ice King of Corona afterward, I’m afraid. Another dish I’d like to make this weekend: Ali Slagle’s Old Bay grilled shrimp. Ali adds a little bit of baking soda to the seasoning, which helps keep the shrimp snappy while they cook, and then tops everything with lemon zest, parsley and garlic. I think that’d be a fine Sunday lunch, in advance of a nap in front of a fan. There are many thousands more recipes to cook this weekend waiting for you on New York Times Cooking.
