"It's important to be a realist and be aware of your situation, but it's equally important to still find joy and hope in life," Tam told BI.

Participants' brain and heart readings indicated that videoconferencing caused higher levels of fatigue, sadness, and inattentiveness than did in-person lectures. What sets their findings apart, they added, is that past research on Zoom fatigue has been dependent on participants self-reporting their level of exhaustion in questionnaires. AdvertisementFor example, a 2021 study by Gothenburg and Stanford researchers that involved over 2,700 respondents found that longer Zoom meetings weren't the only causes of fatigue. However, Zoom fatigue may not be as widespread as it seems. A Pew Research Center study surveying 10,000 workers in October 2020 found that fewer than four in 10 said they were worn out by videoconferencing.

I told my speech therapist that I was frustrated that I haven’t been able to write fiction since experiencing a traumatic brain injury — which means that I am still, after nearly two years, unable to do my job. Over 1.5 million Americans experience a traumatic brain injury each year. The toll of traumatic brain injuries and the mystery of how the brain repairs itself, or doesn’t, is still perplexing and under-researched. I had to invent a new process in order to tackle the project: ideas inscribed one at a time, thought by thought, sentence by sentence, on note cards, each composed over days, weeks, months. Once there was a queen who fell under a spell, causing her to sink into a deep sleep for a long, long time.

Yet Musk, Neuralink's CEO, downplayed investor concerns about the results of its animal testing, the letter said. Musk wrote that "no monkey has died as a result of a Neuralink implant," in a post to his social media site, X, on Sept. 10. Neuralink did not respond to requests for comment on the letter to the SEC. As a result, Musk's statement "may have violated" SEC rules in denying a connection, the lawmakers wrote.

The renewed interest in Alzheimer's vaccines follows a promising first attempt more than 20 years ago that was abandoned after 6% of study volunteers developed life-threatening brain inflammation known as meningoencephalitis. Dr. Reisa Sperling, an Alzheimer's researcher at Mass General Brigham in Boston, said she believes vaccines will play an important role as researchers look to prevent Alzheimer's. She is considering vaccines for her next study in asymptomatic people with Alzheimer's proteins in their blood, but not enough to register on brain scans. Alzheimer's vaccines are still in the early stages and will require large, years-long trials to show they work. Generating a strong immune response is critical for such vaccines, which would typically be given to older individuals with weaker immune systems, he said.

For companies, EAI may be a gold mine. But that isn't stopping companies from using EAI to spy on their employees, determine how they feel, and identify who should be hired and who should be fired. Prescriptions for ketamine have soared in recent years, driven by for-profit clinics and telehealth services offering the medication as a treatment for pain, depression, anxiety and other conditions. With its recent adoption for pain, patients are increasingly encountering those same effects. Ketamine targets a brain chemical messenger called glutamate, which is thought to play a role in both pain and depression. “We want patients to disassociate or feel separate from their pain, depression or anxiety,” said Dr. David Mahjoubi, owner of Ketamine Healing Clinic in Los Angeles. But the experts found “weak or no evidence” for ketamine in many more conditions, including back pain, migraines, fibromyalgia and cancer pain.

Ambitious research yields new atlas of human brain cells

The human brain is complex in terms of its utility - sensing, moving, reading, writing, speaking, thinking and more - and its cellular diversity. The research identified 3,313 cell types, roughly 10 times more than previously known, and the complete set of genes used by each cell type while also mapping their regional distribution in the brain. "The brain cell atlas as a whole provides the cellular substrate for everything that we can do as human beings," said neuroscientist Ed Lein of the Seattle-based Allen Institute for Brain Science, one of the researchers. The various cell types have distinct properties and are likely affected differently in disease, Lein said. "We are only at the very beginning of delineating the complexity of the human brain," said another of the researchers, Bing Ren, director of the University of California, San Diego Center for Epigenomics.

(Reuters) - Jailed Iranian rights campaigner Narges Mohammadi, who won the Nobel Peace Prize on Friday, has sacrificed her freedom for most of her adult life and faces many more years behind bars as she vows to keep challenging clerical rule in Tehran. Mohammadi became the second Iranian woman to be awarded the prize, following the path of her mentor, the lawyer Shirin Ebadi, who won it for her own rights activism in 2003. This is why the regime wants to crush her," Ebadi wrote of Mohammadi in a foreword to Mohammadi's 2020 book "White Torture", a collection of interviews with women prisoners. The committee that awards the Nobel prize said it honoured those behind last year’s demonstrations, and called for the release of Mohammadi. Following her win, Mohammadi said she would never stop striving for democracy and equality, even if that meant staying in prison.

Menopause is considered early when it occurs before age 45, which will happen in 5% to 10% of women, Yang said. Early menopause is concerning because of the shortened reproductive years, but also because of links to other health concerns, she added. How are PMS and early menopause connected? Women also need to know that there are ways to manage early menopause and the bothersome hot flashes, she said.
