A disturbance in the Caribbean Sea is expected to strengthen into a hurricane that will take aim at Florida midweek. A turn toward the northwest is expected Tuesday followed by an acceleration in speed toward the northeast on Wednesday and Thursday, the hurricane center said. A tropical storm is defined as having winds of 39 mph or higher, and a hurricane of 74 mph or higher, according to the National Weather Service. A hurricane watch has been issued for Cabo Catoche in Tulum and for Pinar del Río. A tropical storm warning is in effect in Rio Lagartos in Tulum and Cuba's Artemisa, Pinar del Río and the Isle of Youth, or Isla de la Juventud.

An apology thought to be from singer Janet Jackson following a comment repeating misinformation about Vice President Kamala Harris' racial identity wasn't actually made by her or authorized by her team. Elmasri claimed to be Jackson's manager, but representatives for the singer said her brother, Randy Jackson, is her only manager. Jackson told the interviewer that she "heard" Harris was Indian not Black. Jackson continued to push what she had "heard" despite the interviewer explaining Harris' father was a Black man. "Janet respects Harris’ dual heritage as both Black and Indian and apologizes for any confusion caused," his statement said.

Trump allies have pushed for a special legislative session intended for the Republican-controlled legislature to change Nebraska to a winner-take-all system instead of awarding electoral votes by congressional district. The developments appear to cap months of deliberations over whether Nebraska lawmakers could change the way the state apportions its electoral votes in a way that would benefit Trump. Nebraska allocates its electoral votes by congressional district, and the swing district around Omaha has twice gone to Democrats in recent years, giving them one electoral vote from an otherwise ruby-red state. But if lawmakers changed that to a winner-take-all model, Trump would be all but certain to win all of Nebraska's electoral votes. Maine is the only other state that does not have a winner-take-all system for electoral votes.

TikTok has banned all political advertising on the app since 2019, but that hasn’t stopped advertisers from running what appear to be paid political messages on the platform. According to TikTok, the company does “not allow ads featuring political content across any of our monetization features, including paid ads, creators being paid to make branded political content, and other promotional tools on the platform.”TikTok stands apart among its big tech peers in banning political ads — Facebook, Instagram, X and Google all allow political advertisements. The continued presence of political ads on TikTok illustrates the difficulties in patrolling its own platform just weeks ahead of the 2024 presidential election and amid the court proceedings over its potential ban. The findings come as recent research shows that political ads on social media platforms are often filled with misinformation. There were no obvious signs of misinformation among the TikTok videos NBC reviewed.

Two reports released Monday provide a mixed but compelling outlook on the wave of book removals and challenges as the annual Banned Books Week begins for schools, stores and libraries nationwide. The ALA attributed the decline in book challenges in the first eight months of 2024, in part, to the work of anti-censorship activists and “success in courts” against laws that restrict book access. “But, you know, the First Amendment protects the rights of minors as well.”While the ALA’s report shows signs of book challenges abating, objections to certain titles still persist. Like the ALA, PEN said a large portion of the books targeted have racial or LGBTQ themes. WASHINGTON — Crime, including serious violent incidents like murder and rape, dropped nationally from 2022 to 2023, according to new data released by the FBI on Monday. Violent crime was down about 3% from 2022 to 2023 and property crime took a similar drop of 2.4%, the FBI reported in its annual "Summary of Crime in the Nation." Preliminary numbers showed that 2024 crime numbers were also dropping for the early part of this year, continuing a trend of crime easing as America has come out of the pandemic. (Store closures and COVID-19 security measures likely decreased shoplifting in 2020 and 2021, and may have affected 2022 incidents as well.) But the violent crime rate dropped from 2022 to 2023, from 377.1 violent crimes per 100,000 people in 2022 to 363.8 violent crimes per 100,000 people in 2023, the new FBI data shows.

China’s youth unemployment rate in August rose to the highest level since the new system of record-keeping began in December, driven by an economic slowdown and restrictive hiring policies, according to analysts. China’s urban unemployment rate across all age categories rose 5.3% in August, compared to a 5.2% rise in July. China’s youth unemployment has also been affected by restrictive hiring policies amid a struggling economy as companies are refusing to hire recent college graduates due to the difficulty and costs involved in firing workers in China. This is expensive so no one wants to fire anyone now or hire anyone new,” he noted. “That’s why the [overall] unemployment rate isn’t that bad but the unemployment rate for youths is so high,” Rein added.

A pilot died after two single-engine planes collided mid-air on Sunday in Southern California, officials said. The planes, a single-engine Nanchang CJ-6 and a single-engine Yakovlev Yak-52, collided near Lancaster, in northern Los Angeles County, around 1 p.m. PT on Sunday, the Federal Aviation Administration said. One plane had landed near the intersection 47th Street East and Ave F and the other near 60th Street East and Ave G in Lancaster. The Yak-52 plane is a Soviet-era from 1930 that is owned by Fight’s On! The Nanchang CJ-6 is a Chinese military aircraft from the 1960s used for basic training.

In a bid to coax Donald Trump back onto the debate stage with Vice President Kamala Harris, Democrats plan to launch a new messaging campaign dubbing the former president a "chicken" for saying he won't debate again. The Israeli military on Monday warned civilians in southern Lebanon to move away from Hezbollah positions as it intensified attacks on its neighbor. "Shortly, the IDF will engage in extensive, precise strikes, against terror targets which have been embedded widely throughout Lebanon," Israel Defense Forces spokesperson Rear Adm. Daniel Hagari said early Monday in a statement. The warning is the first of its kind issued by the IDF in Lebanon, an Israeli military official told NBC News, adding the present campaign only involves aerial strikes. Israel, the official said, wants to create safe conditions for its own citizens to return to the northern part of the country, and destroy Hezbollah's infrastructure in southern Lebanon. The Israeli military is also looking into reports that Yahya Sinwar, the leader of Hamas, was killed in a recent Israeli airstrike, an Israeli official told NBC News.

Rescuers in Yellowstone National Park searched the area of Eagle Peak on Sunday in an effort to find a park concession worker who failed to check in at the end of a personal trip, authorities said. JOHANNESBURG Associated Press —An American woman who went missing while on a hike on Table Mountain in Cape Town, South Africa, has died and her body has been recovered, authorities said on Monday. The woman has been identified as a 20-year-old student from North Carolina named Brook Cheuvront. The management of SANParks, which manages Table Mountain and other national parks, said the cause of death was still unclear and an inquest into her death has been opened. An initial search was conducted by rangers, wilderness search and rescue members, and trail runners until late Saturday evening when it was no longer practical to continue, said Louw. South African authorities have urged people to avoid hiking on their own, suggesting it be done in groups of at least four people.

Iran, for example, has used AI to generate content in Spanish about immigration, which Tehran perceives as a divisive US political issue, the ODNI official said. Russia has generated the most AI content related to the US election of any foreign power, according to the ODNI official. Foreign operatives have also embraced plenty of old-school influence techniques this election cycle, such as staging videos rather than generating them with AI. This isn’t the first general US election where foreign powers have considered deploying AI capabilities.
