Volkswagen cuts 2024 outlook as car demand falters

A VW Golf GTI stands in a parking lot within sight of the brand tower on the grounds of the VW plant in Wolfsburg, Germany. Volkswagen cut its annual outlook for the second time in less than three months on Friday, citing a weaker-than-expected performance at its passenger car division as pressure on Europe's top automaker continues to rise. The lowered outlook is the latest from Germany's car giants, with Mercedes-Benz and BMW both downgrading their annual forecasts earlier this month as a result of weakening demand in China, the world's biggest car market. Volkswagen said it was cutting its outlook "in light of a challenging market environment and developments that have fallen short of original expectations, particularly at the brands Volkswagen Passenger Cars, Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles and Tech. Porsche, the holding company of the Porsche and Piech families that holds most of the voting rights in Volkswagen and is the carmaker's single biggest shareholder, also cut its own outlook in the wake of Volkswagen's downgrade.

For one fan who was in attendance for the Japanese superstar's record-breaking home run, Ohtani's success may deliver a multimillion-payday. The starting bid for the historic ball — the most valuable from Ohtani's incredible 6-for-6, 3-home-run and 10 RBI performance — is $500,000. The auction will run from Sept. 27 to Oct. 9, with extended bidding taking place on Oct. 16. The $3 million figure represents the highest price ever paid for a baseball when Mark McGwire's 70th home run ball sold in 1999. The United States is home to some of the most congested cities in the world, but there are some places around the country where residents have a smooth daily commute. The average commute time was calculated using the 2022 American Census Survey and the traffic was calculated using Lyft data from August 2023 to August 2024. The report found that 25% of the commuters surveyed said that time was the most important factor in having a great commute. "If you are going back to the office, you know that the commute is not what it once was. Israeli politics swirl as Hezbollah conflict ramps up

“It’ll take him months on end to train for the job,” said Gadi Eisenkot, a highly respected former Israeli military chief and member of the opposition. Policy and domestic politics are impossible to separate in any democracy, but especially in Netanyahu’s Israel – and especially now. Remarkably, Netanyahu held a security consultation on Wednesday but did not invite his defense minister, an Israeli official told CNN. Hezbollah says that it’s attacking Israel in solidarity with the Palestinian people in Gaza; Israel wants to get Hezbollah to stop firing even without a Gaza ceasefire and hostage deal. With both the Philadelphi Corridor and Hezbollah, Netanyahu’s critics have questioned why, if they were so critical, he waited months to raise the stakes over those issues.

But now, as the dangers of a widening deficit and mounting debt grow, former President Donald Trump and Vice President Kamala Harris are making little effort to address it. A budget deficit occurs when a country’s spending exceeds what it collects in revenue, primarily through taxes. The deficit is expected to widen under the status quo and could get even worse under proposals by both Harris and Trump, if enacted. During the Trump-Harris presidential debate earlier this month, the budget deficit was mentioned just twice, when Harris jabbed Trump for his proposals, which are expected to add considerably more to the deficit than hers. In the 2021 fiscal year, during which Trump left office, the country ran a $2.8 trillion deficit.

Argentina’s poverty rate soared to almost 53% in the first half of the year, official data released on Thursday showed, the first hard evidence of the painful impact of libertarian President Javier Milei’s tough austerity measures. The country is in a deep recession and inflation remains in triple digits, though there are signs things are improving. ‘Any level of poverty is horrendous’Agustin Salvia, director of the UCA’s Observatory, said that there was a significant impact at the start of the year from Milei’s policies. “If you look at the whole story, it shows a deterioration in the first quarter.
