On the night of June 3, vast parts of northern Israel went up in flames after Hezbollah fired rockets on the area. It is increasingly evident that without a cease-fire, the situation at the northern border could rapidly deteriorate into a full-scale war between Israel and Hezbollah. The Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah has stated repeatedly that Hezbollah will continue its attacks as long as the hostilities in Gaza continue. Any deal aimed at stabilizing the situation in the north will depend on reaching a conclusive resolution of the conflict in Gaza that Hamas accepts. Even then, displaced Israelis are understandably skeptical that a cease-fire followed by a diplomatic agreement can restore security and therefore have been pushing for significant military action.

CNN —US intelligence has learned of discussions between Houthis in Yemen to provide weapons to the Somali militant group al-Shabaab, in what three American officials described to CNN as a worrying development that threatens to further destabilize an already violent region. The Houthis are Zaydi Shiites, and al-Shabaab traditionally has been deeply ideologically opposed to Shiism. “Being able to sell some weapons would bring them much needed income,” the senior administration official said. But a weapons agreement between al-Shabaab and the Houthis would be something new, according to US officials. No matter what the Houthis provide, there’s likely limited opportunity for al-Shabaab to fire directly at US assets in the region.

The rescue was complex and, as is often the case, did not go all that smoothly. The numbers are unclear – the Gazan Health Ministry, which is controlled by Hamas, says 274 Palestinians were killed; the Israeli military said it was fewer than 100. In the past several months, Israel has refused ceasefire agreements that would have released many hostages, to the great outrage of the hostages’ families. They, too, are not simply “casualties” or “civilians” or “collateral damage,” but people whose safety and futures have been snatched away. Brutal wars like the one between Israel and Hamas can test our humanity.

CNN —Ukraine’s military on Sunday said it had destroyed one of Russia’s newest and most advanced fighter jets in a drone strike on a military base deep inside Russia. Ukrainian forces said they successfully destroyed one of Russia's most advanced combat jets, SU-57, in a drone strike on a military base deep inside Russia. Flight Global’s “World Air Forces 2024” directory lists 14 Su-57s as active and another 62 as on order. TASS reported in 2022 that Russian forces will receive a total of 22 Su-57s by the end of this year. If the reports of the Ukrainian drone strike deep inside Russia prove true, it marks another success of Kyiv’s low-cost drones taking out high-value Russian assets.

Jerusalem CNN —At least 39 people have been killed and dozens of others injured in an overnight Israeli airstrike on a United Nations-run school in central Gaza, according to hospital and government authorities in the Palestinian enclave. The school, run by the UN agency for Palestinian refugees (UNRWA), was housing displaced people in the Nuseirat refugee camp at the time of the strike, the Gaza government media office said. Authorities at the nearby Al-Aqsa Martyrs Hospital said casualties could rise as victims were still being brought to the hospital on Thursday morning. The Israeli military confirmed it carried out the airstrike, which it said targeted a Hamas compound operating inside the school. The attack also came as American, Egyptian and Qatari officials met in Doha to revive negotiations on a new ceasefire and hostage release deal.
