A dozen school districts in Oklahoma said they will not check students’ immigration status if asked by the state’s education department, in the latest sign of growing resistance to State Superintendent of Public Instruction Ryan Walters. “The focus has changed from public school students to self-centered political aspirations,” said Susan Wray, an elementary school principal in Edmond and a former state education department official. School districts also cannot ask students about their immigration status if it may be used to deny them access to a free public education, according to U.S. Department of Education guidance. The Deer Creek, Pryor, Millwood, Owasso and Jenks school districts told NBC News that they do not currently, nor do they plan to, ask students about their status. He threatened to take over Tulsa Public Schools after the district leadership told a board member she could not lead prayers on the microphone at a graduation ceremony.

Meteor showers, natural fireworks that streak brightly across the night sky, are one of them. The latest observable meteor shower will be the Perseids, which have been active since mid-July and are forecast to continue until the end of August, at the latest. A favorite among skywatchers, the Perseids are one of the strongest shows each year, with as many as 100 long, colorful streaks an hour. This year, viewers may have to compete with light from the moon, which will be nearly half full on the night that the shower peaks. But according to Sky & Telescope, the moon will set before midnight, leaving the early morning hours sufficiently dark for a spectacular show.

On Thursday, scientists and engineers in Southern California got an exclusive glimpse at a recent snapshot of Fornax, a constellation of stars in the Southern Hemisphere. At the end of last month, the spacecraft’s survey concluded, and it closed its telescopic eyes for the final time. “This was the little space telescope that could,” said Amy Mainzer, an astronomer at the University of California, Los Angeles, and principal investigator for NEOWISE. “We were really lucky to get to do this work.”When the mission was launched in 2009, it was known simply as WISE. It spent the next year peering at faraway objects in the universe radiating infrared light, including supermassive black holes, brown dwarfs, dying stars and one of the most luminous galaxies in the cosmos.

CNN —A video that surfaced online appears to show bodies on burnt-out Russian military trucks in the country’s southwestern Kursk region, the latest sign that Ukraine’s cross-border assault is probing more deeply and inflicting significant damage on Moscow’s troops. Rybar, one of the more prominent Russian military blogs, published a roundup of developments Friday that said the front lines have “somewhat stabilized” with the arrival of Russian reinforcements. Rybar cited local residents of Vtoroye Knyazhino, a settlement on the outskirts of Sudzha, as saying Ukrainian infantry entered their village. US officials say they do not believe Ukraine intends to hold Russian territory for the long term. India's biggest budget airline IndiGo has been trialing a booking feature that will allow women to avoid booking a seat next to men on flights. The feature, the first of its kind for an airline, works by showing female travelers a pink seat at the seat selection page if it will be occupied by a female passenger, a company representative told CNBC Travel. Travelers on IndiGo must identify their genders when they purchase tickets, which allows the airline to control access to these details, according to Indigo. However, IndiGo's website and mobile app did not show the feature when CNBC did a check. The new feature has received "positive individual reactions" on social media, IndiGo's CEO told CNBC's "Street Signs Asia" last week.

The crisis could also have implications for neighboring India, which is seen as having long supported Hasina and where she fled Monday. He did not say how long Hasina would be in India or what she planned to do next. Though the protests began over a controversial quota system for highly coveted government jobs, they soon morphed into broader calls for justice for those killed as well as Hasina’s resignation. On Monday, the State Department said the U.S. stands with the people of Bangladesh and urged all parties to refrain from further violence as an interim government is formed. “Too many lives have been lost over the course of the past several weeks, and we urge calm and restraint in the days ahead,” spokesperson Matthew Miller said at a news briefing in Washington.

UNESCO's World Heritage Committee named a site in the Gaza Strip — Saint Hilarion Monastery, or Tell Umm Amer — to both its "World Heritage" and "World Heritage In Danger" lists in late July. The decision, made during the 46th session of the World Heritage Committee held in New Delhi, India, reflects the ancient monastery's value and need for protection, according to UNESCO. The Committee inscribed the monastery — one of the oldest sites in the Middle East, according to UNESCO — to both lists using an emergency procedure set forth in the World Heritage Convention. Use of the emergency procedureSimultaneous inscriptions to UNESCO's World Heritage and its "In Danger" lists are rather common, a UNESCO spokesperson told CNBC. Use of UNESCO's emergency procedure fast-tracked Saint Hilarion Monastery/Tell Umm Amer's inclusion onto its World Heritage Lists, a procedure which normally takes at least two years.

Most people undergo a knee replacement due to osteoarthritis in the joint, which can cause pain, swelling and less knee mobility. “We’ve always had this idea that muscle mass matters and helps protect joints,” said Miller, who was not involved with the study. The data that van Meurs and her colleagues studied came from people with an average body mass index of 26. “Before engaging in a lot of weight-bearing activity, do some training in the gym to strengthen your leg muscles,” van Meurs said. An Israeli official told NBC News on Sunday that officials were bracing for a potential retaliatory attack from both Hamas and Iran. The day's rout was sparked by a massive sell-off in Japanese stocks. The Nikkei fell 12.4%, its worst day since the 1987 "Black Monday" crash rattled investors around the world. Spencer Platt / Getty ImagesThe Japanese drawdown, in turn, was partly in response to the worse-than-expected jobs report published Friday that showed U.S. unemployment rising to 4.3% and just 114,000 jobs added in July. As soon as that report was published, stocks started erasing some of their earlier losses, while bond purchases, which had surged as investors sought safe-haven assets, faded. Officials are relying on multiple streams of intelligence, and there are divisions among national security officials on how and when Iran’s response might unfold. The relative uncertainty has left the Biden administration in a defensive crouch as it tries to rally allies and pressure Iran not to escalate tensions. The extent of the United States’ further involvement in the war largely depends on how exactly Iran responds to Haniyeh’s death. Under the new passport-less immigration program, Singapore residents will not need to show their passports to arrive and depart at air and sea checkpoints. Foreign travelers must also enroll their iris, facial and fingerprint biometrics at manual immigration counters, according to Singapore's Immigration & Checkpoints Authority. However, children under six years old cannot use biometric clearance, or automated lanes at all, to clear immigration, according to authorities. By early 2026, Singapore immigration officials expect 95% of travelers will be able to clear immigration via automated lanes. Biometric processing is expected to reduce immigration wait times by 40%, according to immigration officials.
