After Democrats’ long-held edge, Team Trump starts to close the battleground ad spending gapBy Ben KamisarIf you live in a swing state and are already sick of seeing presidential campaign ads, buckle up. Over that same period of time, the Trump campaign spent less than $230,000. But over the last two weeks, a dramatic shift from the Trump campaign has helped close the gap. It has spent a total of $13 million in those key states, compared to $16.5 million from the Harris campaign. But we’ve written before about how Republicans have cut into the Democrats’ fundraising edge, and these ad spending numbers show the fruits of that effort.

That’s why, he said, he invested in AppHarvest, a startup that promised a high-tech future for farming and for the workers of Eastern Kentucky. Despite promising local jobs, the company eventually began contracting migrant workers from Mexico, Guatemala and other countries, numerous former employees told CNN. After about a week on the job, Vance took a meeting with AppHarvest founder Jonathan Webb, as Webb later recounted in a Fox News podcast interview. The company’s health care benefits attracted Morgan, a single father, who told CNN he took a pay cut to join the startup. Such comments ring hollow to some former AppHarvest workers, who argue Vance’s rhetoric as a candidate for vice president doesn’t align with the reality they experienced.

In the wake of the murder of three young girls in the northwestern town of Southport, England, riots erupted across the country. Seizing on misinformation about the suspect’s identity, far-right rioters embarked on a harrowing rampage, setting fire to cars, burning down mosques, harassing Muslims, looting stores and attacking hotels housing asylum seekers. Far-right extremists, emboldened by that government’s turn to migrant-bashing, have been waiting for the perfect chance to take to the streets. But the chaos has been coming. On TikTok, far-right users went live and called on one another to gather in protest.

AdvertisementHowever, for Trump, a Harris win in Arizona would be a huge blow in his attempts to win a second term. Biden's 2020 victories in Arizona, Georgia, and Nevada — as well as his wins in Michigan, Pennsylvania, and Wisconsin — effectively cut off Trump's path to victory that year. Should Harris neutralize the border security issue — a feat that seemed unimaginable when Biden was still the presumptive nominee — it'll give her a major opening to win Arizona.

I prosecuted them in case after case, and I won.”A day earlier, the Harris campaign released a television advertisement highlighting her pivot. Her stance reflects a change in public opinion since Mr. Trump left the White House in 2021. The decision for the Harris campaign to frame her record as California attorney general as a “border-state prosecutor” stands in contrast to how she ran in the 2020 Democratic primary. “Donald Trump tanked the deal,” Ms. Harris said in Arizona as a crowd of more than 15,000 supporters booed. “Voters want to see folks be serious about actually fixing the broken immigration system and securing the border,” Ms. Cox said in an interview.

As long as I’ve covered Republican campaigns, there has been racial fearmongering: Dark-skinned people are coming to hurt you. Bush, it was Willie Horton. Liberals would give more criminals like Horton furloughs, so they could break into your house and rape your girlfriend. With George W. Bush and Dick Cheney, it was Arab terrorists. With Donald Trump, it was migrants swarming over the border from Central and South America with the intent to rape and kill, as well as the racist “birther” conspiracy about “Barack HUSSEIN Obama.”

For weeks, Republicans have pummeled Vice President Kamala Harris on immigration, blaming her for President Biden’s policies at the border. Now, Ms. Harris, the Democratic presidential nominee, is seeking to neutralize that line of attack, one of her biggest weaknesses with voters, running a playbook that Democrats say has worked for them in recent elections and staking out her clearest position yet as a tough-on-crime prosecutor focused on securing the border. “I was attorney general of a border state,” Ms. Harris, who was once California’s top prosecutor, said on Friday at a rally in Arizona, a swing state where immigration is a top concern for voters. “I went after the transnational gangs, the drug cartels and human traffickers. I prosecuted them in case after case, and I won.”

It was meant to be another night of violence at the hands of the far right. “It shows that when everyone comes out to support, their numbers dwindle.”Large crowds gathered at an anti-racism protest in Walthamstow on Wednesday, where far-right violence had been expected. The fury simmering in a subset of White Britain remains a live danger; these riots were shocking, but not entirely surprising. “I normally walk through this city center all the time,” Nadeem Akhtar, 18, told CNN in the northern English city of Sheffield, where angry riots took place. A dozen school districts in Oklahoma said they will not check students’ immigration status if asked by the state’s education department, in the latest sign of growing resistance to State Superintendent of Public Instruction Ryan Walters. “The focus has changed from public school students to self-centered political aspirations,” said Susan Wray, an elementary school principal in Edmond and a former state education department official. School districts also cannot ask students about their immigration status if it may be used to deny them access to a free public education, according to U.S. Department of Education guidance. The Deer Creek, Pryor, Millwood, Owasso and Jenks school districts told NBC News that they do not currently, nor do they plan to, ask students about their status. This escalated into days of riots in the U.K. that saw attacks on mosques, immigration centers and hotels that house asylum seekers. The disinformation circulated online tapped into pre-existing biases and prejudice, Ondrak explained, adding that incorrect reports often thrive at times of heightened emotions. Many of the right-wing protestors claim the high number of migrants in the U.K. fuels crime and violence. Ondrak also noted that many groups that had previously circulated false information about the attack had started walking it back, saying it was a hoax. On Wednesday, the U.K. media regulator Ofcom issued a letter to social media platforms saying they shouldn't wait for the new law to come into force.

With ongoing affordability challenges exacerbated by high interest rates and inflated home values, housing is a major concern for Americans across the political spectrum. "When I talk to Americans, one of the biggest concerns I hear is, 'Why are housing costs so high?' In the past, Vance has blamed the housing affordability crisis largely on high interest rates. Many economists disagree with Vance's argument about the source of the housing affordability crisis and his solution to it. They've also blamed the current administration for relatively high interest rates, which are determined by the independent Federal Reserve and designed to control inflation.

WASHINGTON — All of a sudden, Kamala Harris is talking about the border — and relishing it. “It needs to be repaired, and we are working on that in a way that we establish a safe and humane and orderly immigration system at the border,” Harris said. As illegal border crossings soared, Harris’ critics blamed the Biden administration — and Harris herself. “For three and a half years, ‘border czar’ Harris has allowed terrorists and criminals to pour across our wide-open border,” he said. UK's Starmer to hold emergency meeting as riots intensify

British Prime Minister Keir Starmer will hold an emergency meeting with police chiefs on Monday after days of violent anti-immigration protests intensified, with buildings and vehicles torched and hotels holding asylum seekers targeted. Riots have erupted across towns and cities in the last week after three girls were killed in a knife attack in Southport in northwest England, with 420 people arrested so far. Police have said the suspect was born in Britain and are not treating it as a terrorist incident. Interior minister Yvette Cooper said rioters had felt "emboldened by this moment to stir up racial hatred", with bricks thrown at police officers, shops looted and mosques and Asian-owned businesses attacked. In Rotherham, northern England, protesters sought to break into a hotel that housed asylum seekers.

(Trump himself has tried to distance himself from Project 2025 but many of his policies and goals overlap.) “Honestly, the Trump administration was often sloppy in the way they rolled out these executive orders, including the first Muslim travel ban,” Washington Attorney General Bob Ferguson told CNN, referring to the Trump ban on migrants from several Muslim-majority countries that was the target of one of nearly 100 lawsuits brought by the Evergreen State against the Trump administration. “This time around, Project 2025 provides a very thorough overview over the issues in which a leading conservative organization, like the Heritage Foundation, is likely to push the Trump administration,” Romero said. Part of the Project 2025 effort has been to collect and vet thousands of potential staffers to serve up and down the federal bureaucracy of a future Trump administration. The ACLU, meanwhile, has been rolling out a series of analyses of possible legal and legislative responses to potential Trump policies.
