All of the largest retailers have activated their accounts, with the notable exception of Costco. That's not to say Costco doesn't have a presence on Threads — it's just not official. Dozens of Costco fan pages have already activated their accounts and are racking up thousands of followers. Unless Threads shows it can drive those two behaviors, it seems the famously frugal Costco will be content to sit this one out. Look no further than its official Twitter account, which contains zero posts and a bio reading, "Our Twitter account is currently inactive.

Zuck can be happy: Threads reached 100 million users faster than ChatGPT. Mark Zuckerberg had cause to celebrate over the weekend as Meta's newest app, Threads, passed the 100 million user milestone less than a week after its launch. The would-be Twitter competitor is now the fastest-growing app ever, beating ChatGPT, the generative AI chatbot that corporate America hasn't stopped talking about all year. But its leap to 100 million users had a massive jumpstart thanks to its integration with Instagram, whose billion-plus users are actively encouraged to download the new app if they fancy adding a new social-media timesuck onto their devices. ChatGPT, released to the public November 30, surpassed the 100 million user milestone in January.

Twitter's lawyer wrote a letter to Facebook parent Meta on Wednesday, accusing the company of "systematic" and "unlawful misappropriation" of trade secrets following the launch of its Threads service. The letter from longtime Elon Musk attorney Alex Spiro alleged that Meta's new Twitter clone was built by former Twitter employees "deliberately assigned" to develop a "copycat" app. Spiro offered no concrete examples of Twitter employees using trade secrets to build the app, which notched millions of users within hours of its launch. "No one on the Threads engineering team is a former Twitter employee," Andy Stone, Meta communications director, posted on Threads. Spiro said Meta is "expressly prohibited" from crawling or scraping Twitter's follower data, without providing evidence that Meta has engaged in that activity.

Mark Zuckerberg bills Threads as a space for kindness — but he's not above using it to ding Elon Musk. Threads arrives as Twitter has another disastrous week. As the Meta chief put it on the new Threads app, the vision is "to create an open and friendly public space for conversation" for 1 billion-plus people. It's a highly calculated move to release a Twitter clone in a week of Twitter chaos. Threads can only be so friendly then if its growth, for now, comes from the conflagration at Twitter.

Meta launched Threads social media platform — its answer to Twitter — on Wednesday. 10 million users signed up for Threads in the first seven hours of its launch, per CEO Mark Zuckerberg. Analysts say it could be tough for Threads to outshine Twitter's existing power user base. And even though Threads launching at an advantageous time, at least four Wall Street analysts say it could be challenging to outshine the incumbent. After all, it could be difficult to get Twitter users to move, Billy Duberstein, a portfolio manager at Stone Oak Capital, wrote on the Motley Fool website on Wednesday.

Threads, Meta's app designed to compete with Twitter, has now appeared on the App Store. Meta's chief product officer previously said users were looking for a "sanely run" platform. Elon Musk fired that jibe back at Meta over its long list of users' data Threads will collect. Elon Musk returned a Meta executive's jibe back at the company as its Twitter competition app Threads, nears release. "Thank goodness they're so sanely run," Musk said of Meta this week, apparently sarcastically, in response to the news.
