The country is confronting a perilous moment, internally estranged over politics and culture and as multiple foreign policy crises deepen. Biden has dedicated his term to expanding NATO to counter the Kremlin’s onslaught on Ukraine and threat to wider Europe. This leaves Biden badly needing to use Thursday night’s debate to convince voters that he can make their lives better — and soon. Post-game coverage of Thursday’s debate is certain to zero in on the best verbal jabs, soundbites and the stamina and energy of the rival candidates. But the most meaningful impact of the clash between Trump and Biden will only begin to unfold after noon on Inauguration Day, January 20, 2025.

Among the most fraught questions about this election is the health of the aging candidates themselves. President Biden is 81 and former President Donald Trump is 78; the major presidential parties have never before put forth candidates who are as old. Both men have been seen as showing signs of cognitive decline, leading to calls for greater disclosure about the health of our presidential candidates. It is natural to assume that physicians might have a better understanding than other voters of how healthy either Mr. Trump or Mr. Biden is. But they are even more pressing today, as social media amplifies questions about the health and fitness of public officials.

In March, the first lady, Jill Biden, announced a new White House women’s health initiative that highlighted a seemingly obscure research question: What if you could delay menopause and all the health risks associated with it? The question comes from a field of research that has started to draw attention over the last few years, as scientists who study longevity and women’s health have come to realize that the female reproductive system is far more than just a baby-maker. The ovaries, in particular, appear to be connected to virtually every aspect of a woman’s health. Once that happens, a woman enters menopause, which accelerates her aging and the decline of other organ systems, like the heart and the brain. While women, on average, live longer than men, they spend more time living with diseases or disabilities.

An Israeli strike killed a top official in charge of ambulance services in the Gaza Strip, local health officials said on Monday, as the Israeli defense minister met with top American officials in Washington about a possible new phase in the Israeli offensive. The official, Hani al-Jafarawi, who was the director of ambulance and emergency services in Gaza, was killed in a strike on a health clinic in Gaza City, the Gazan Health Ministry said. The Israeli military did not respond to a request for comment. The meetings in the Washington area by Israel’s defense minister, Yoav Gallant, with the C.I.A. director, William J. It’s a strange time for gay rights in America. As the country nears the 10th anniversary of the legalization of gay marriage nationwide, support for same-sex unions has risen to 70 percent of the American public. Even Obergefell v. Hodges, the 2015 Supreme Court ruling that legalized gay marriage, is under attack. Clearly, marriage equality was not enough to bring full equality to L.G.B.T.Q. But the gay marriage campaign was a major missed opportunity to expand L.G.B.T.Q.

Biden Is Prepping for the First Debate
  + stars: | 2024-06-24 | by ( Matthew Cullen | ) www.nytimes.com   time to read: +1 min
President Biden has spent the last five days at Camp David, the presidential retreat in the woods of northern Maryland, sparring with a man pretending to be Donald Trump and working with his closest advisers to prepare for this week’s debate. The president’s aides have turned a movie theater and an airplane hangar at Camp David into a mock debate stage. There, Ron Klain, a longtime adviser to Biden, is leading an effort to help Biden shake off the rust that often comes with being an incumbent on the defense and to combat voter concerns that he is too old to be president. Trump is taking a far looser approach to debate prep, with some policy briefings but no role playing. For both candidates, the debate, at 9 p.m. Eastern on Thursday in Atlanta, could be the highest-stakes moment of their rematch.

Attacks in Russia’s Dagestan Region: What to Know
  + stars: | 2024-06-24 | by ( Eve Sampson | ) www.nytimes.com   time to read: +1 min
Two bloody attacks in Dagestan, in southern Russia, on Sunday ignited fears of extremist violence on the home front, as the Kremlin pours resources and bodies into its sprawling war in Ukraine. Though little else is known about the attacks, they touched a nerve in a region long strained by separatist and ethnic tensions. Groups of gunmen launched seemingly coordinated attacks on synagogues and Orthodox churches in two cities — Makhachkala, Dagestan’s capital, and Derbent — that are more than 70 miles apart. Though Russian officials called the violence acts of terrorism, they did not blame the attacks on any specific people or groups. No organization has claimed responsibility, and the motive remains unknown.

Iranian officials insisted for decades that the law requiring women to cover their hair and dress modestly was sacrosanct and not even worth discussion. They dismissed the struggle by women who challenged the law as a symptom of Western meddling. Now, as Iran holds a presidential election this week, the issue of mandatory hijab, as the hair covering is known, has become a hot campaign topic. He has also said that government officials should be punished over the hijab law because it was their duty to educate women about why they should wear hijab, not violently enforce it. And women have resisted the law, in different ways, ever since it went into effect after the Islamic Revolution in 1979.

In some ways, that puts both men on equal footing when they walk onto Thursday’s debate stage.
