A Texas sheriff is launching a criminal investigation into the relocation of nearly 50 migrants to Martha’s Vineyard in Massachusetts last week, saying individuals lured them to travel under false pretenses of a better life. Bexar County Sheriff Javier Salazar said the 48 migrants were exploited, hoodwinked and left stranded at Martha’s Vineyard last week, and his office would investigate any potential criminal activity involved in their relocation. Some of the migrants said they were given false information about job opportunities and housing in the region, as well as how the trip would affect their ability to attend court hearings, according to attorneys who have spoken with them.
A Texas sheriff said Monday that his office has opened a criminal investigation into Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis’ unprecedented move to send nearly 50 migrants from Texas to Martha’s Vineyard last week. The group of mostly Venezuelan asylum-seekers were then taken to the posh Massachusetts island “for little more than a photo op or a video op, and they were unceremoniously stranded in Martha’s Vineyard,” Salazar said. Attorneys representing 30 of the 48 migrants sent to Martha’s Vineyard have asked the Massachusetts attorney general and the federal government to open criminal investigations. Doug Ducey, a Republican, also began transporting migrants to Washington, D.C.Desantis sent two planes carrying migrants to Martha's Vineyard on Wednesday.
When roughly 50 migrants were flown from Texas to Martha’s Vineyard, Massachusetts, under a new program by Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis to highlight illegal immigration, they were given a brochure about housing, cash assistance and jobs for refugees. DeSantis said he chose the tony and exclusive island of Martha’s Vineyard for Wednesday's trip because it calls itself a sanctuary destination. Many seek and are granted asylum in the U.S., and most of the migrants flown to Martha’s Vineyard were asylum-seekers or plan to be, according to Lawyers for Civil Rights. And then, when they landed on the ground in Martha’s Vineyard, those people were nowhere to be found,” Sellstrom said.
No one knows what all the sperm whale codas mean, but they can have distinctive rhythms and tempos, known as “dialects,” Hersh said. They’ve now determined that there are at least seven distinct sperm whale “vocal clans” across the Pacific Ocean, each with their own identity codas, Hersh said. And the sperm whale clans may be thousands of years old. Beguš is part of Project CETI — the Cetacean Translation Initiative — which was established last year to decipher the sounds of sperm whales. “As the authors note, we still understand little about the function of sperm whale codas,” she said in an email.
Curtis Ried, a career foreign service officer and veteran of the National Security staff for two presidents, has been named as the NSC’s new chief of staff, officials tell NBC News. He has traveled regularly with President Biden at home and abroad, another key factor in his selection. Ried in particular played a key role in working with the United Nations and rebuilding the refugee admissions program. That number doesn’t include so-called DNC “fellows” and other part time staff who are engaged in some of the key party efforts, especially voter registration. Obama has already done fundraisers for the National Democratic Redistricting Committee (August 30 in Martha’s Vineyard) and the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee (Sept. 8 in New York).
... And Joe O’Dea pitches himself as pro-abortion rights in Colorado Senate while Democrats push back. The Republican Party holds all-time high advantages on the economy, crime and border security, while the Democrats have an all-time high on abortion and a double-digit edge on health care. Midterm roundup: Trump hits the trail in OhioFormer President Donald Trump traveled to Ohio over the weekend to boost GOP Senate hopeful J.D. Not every GOP Senate candidate is eager to campaign with Trump. It’s a position on abortion that is different from that of his fellow Republican Senate candidates, many of whom favor stricter bans with few exceptions.

It’s hard to imagine a bigger spectacle of American political failure than this week’s histrionics over migrants. Doug Ducey have been sending migrants to Democratic cities since May to make a political point about their struggles with unchecked migration. This week Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis escalated, as is his fashion, by flying about 50 Venezuelans to Martha’s Vineyard off the Massachusetts coast. Mr. Abbott then bused 100 foreign nationals to Vice President Kamala Harris’s residence in Washington.
Ron DeSantis unexpectedly sent two planes carrying mostly Venezuelan immigrants, including children, to Martha’s Vineyard on Wednesday. Greg Abbott bused migrants out of Texas this year to cities with Democratic mayors — he has sent more than 10,000 migrants to liberal enclaves. The migrants were kindly greeted on Martha’s Vineyard and received Covid-19 tests, food, clothing and shelter. It’s been reported that the migrants said they were unaware that they were going to Martha’s Vineyard, were promised aid and housing and had to walk miles from the airport to seek help. Perhaps DeSantis sent these planes to Martha’s Vineyard hoping that the visual of immigrants at the doorstep of rich, white liberals would help his political aspirations — all the way to the White House.
Ron DeSantis sent two planes of mostly Venezuelan asylum-seekers to Martha's Vineyard in Massachusetts, advertising executive Max Lefeld slammed the move as a political stunt. A group of migrants huddle on a sidewalk in front of St. Andrews Episcopal Church in Martha's Vineyard, Mass. The divisions largely fall along political lines, with Venezuelan Republicans defending DeSantis and Democrats blasting the move. Venezuelan migrants often cross the perilous Darien Gap in the Colombia-Panama border and then make their way north across Central America. Now many Venezuelans are divided, with Republicans defending DeSantis’ move to send Venezuelans to Martha’s Vineyard and Democrats condemning it.
It was 6 a.m., and the buses from Texas had yet to arrive. An hour later, empty buses from the Metropolitan Transportation Authority would line up to transport migrants across New York City. At around 8, 80 asylum-seeking migrants filed out of the two buses arriving from the Lone Star State, one sent by Mr. Abbott from the border and another by the city of El Paso. Messrs. Castro and Espaillat shook everyone’s hand, saying: “Bienvenidos a Nueva York.”Since early August, Gov. Ron DeSantis one-upped Mr. Abbott by sending a small plane full of Venezuelan migrants to Martha’s Vineyard, Mass.
Seven miles off the shore of Cape Cod in Massachusetts, Martha’s Vineyard is a roughly triangular-shaped, 96-square-mile Atlantic Ocean island with six towns. One of these communities is Chilmark, whose 02535 ZIP Code has the priciest residential real estate in all of New England, according to Realtor.com. (News Corp, owner of The Wall Street Journal, also operates Realtor.com under license from the National Association of Realtors.) Rural and private, Chilmark has a pastoral landscape: rolling hills, stone walls and sheep grazing on hillsides. It also encompasses the small working fishing village of Menemsha, which has a public beach where people congregate to watch spectacular sunsets across the Vineyard Sound.

Consumers Hate Fees, But Are Willing to Pay Them AnywayResearch shows that even when consumers know fees will be tacked on to a product’s cost at checkout, they’re more likely to pay the bill instead of finding a better price.
