Under the new legislation, the monitor will conduct inspections and investigations for the 2023 municipal election and the 2024 state election in Bridgeport. The possible electoral fraud incident is already the subject of a state elections investigation and a civil lawsuit filed by the candidate who lost the primary. Republicans in the Democratic-controlled General Assembly insisted Connecticut must take more steps to tighten its electoral laws and ensure confidence in elections across the state. “It's necessary to show the people of Connecticut that we're not going to tolerate people undermining our election process,” said state Sen. The $150,000 for the election monitor had been approved earlier this year for the two-year position, but it was mistakenly sent to the wrong state agency.

CNN —Ukraine has ramped up missile and drone strikes on occupied Crimea in recent weeks, as it attempts to land both strategic and symbolic blows against Russian forces that annexed the peninsula in 2014. The next night, Russian air defenses shot down 11 Ukrainian drones over Crimea, according to the Russian Ministry of Defense. The shift in focus to Crimea occurred after Russia allowed the Black Sea Grain Initiative to lapse in July. Russia’s Black Sea Fleet has since resumed its blockade of Ukraine’s ports, preventing vital grain exports and threatening global food security. Symbolic valueYet the strikes on Crimea also have huge symbolic value and are intended to damage Russian President Vladimir Putin’s prestige.

When Marilyn Monroe moved to Brentwood in 1962, the Los Angeles neighborhood provided the perfect seclusion for the world’s most famous woman. The four-bedroom Spanish colonial-style house was tucked off a quiet street, with a kidney-shaped pool and towering palm trees. The house was known as “Cursum Perficio,” which in Latin loosely translates to “I end the journey.”Six months after she moved in, Ms. Monroe died of a drug overdose in her bedroom. Though her time there was short, the Brentwood home has become a quiet monument to her grand life, with fans still leaving flowers at the front gate some 60 years after her death. The Los Angeles City Council voted unanimously on Friday to begin a process that would designate the home as a historic and cultural monument, saving it from demolition.

Marilyn Lovell, who, as an object of fascination for the news media, the inspiration for movie and TV characters and a figure in history books, incarnated for many Americans the hardships and glamour of being an astronaut’s wife, died on Aug. 27 in Lake Forest, Ill. She was 93. Her death was announced by the Wenban Funeral Home of Lake Forest. Her husband, Jim Lovell, once the most experienced astronaut in the United States, was captain of perhaps the nation’s most dramatic spaceflight: Apollo 13. It was launched on April 11, 1970, with the goal of returning astronauts to the surface of the moon for the third time. Mr. Lovell and Fred Haise were the designated moon walkers; Jack Swigert was supposed to remain in orbit.

By her own admission, the actor Anastasia Graff is a maximalist who loves “girlie things,” so it’s not altogether surprising that she wanted a periwinkle kitchen for her 1930s-era West Hollywood home. Still, such a bold choice could send some interior designers into a tailspin. Clad in white-painted wood siding with a wide porch, it had appealed to Graff because it reminded her of the traditional wooden homes on the East Coast, where she grew up. But it didn’t hurt that the place is part of local lore: It once belonged to the Russian-born composer and conductor Igor Stravinsky, who lived in Los Angeles from 1940 to 1969, while he conducted the L.A. Philharmonic both downtown and at the Hollywood Bowl. “You realize in Los Angeles, there’s a story behind every house,” says Graff.

But what’s really considered a plus-size body or garment? Mike Coppola/Getty ImagesThough there are no universal criteria for plus-size clothing, the general perception of what constitutes plus-size has changed over time. Sixty-seven percent of US women are considered plus-size, Downing Peters said. The dearth of plus-size clothing adds to a stigma that makes people with bigger bodies feel marginalized, she added. Other stores have meanwhile stopped separating standard and plus-size clothing into different departments, which may help eliminate stigma, Keist said.

Ukraine has launched a site to track $1.3 billion of art owned by sanctioned Russian oligarchs. The site lists artworks like Picassos and Warhols believed to be bought and sold by sanctioned figures. The nature of the art market offers many loopholes for the transfer of assets, the site says. The database, it says, will allow art market actors to check that they are not dealing in sanctioned goods. Art dealings can be a perfect vehicle for the quiet transfer of assets, largely taking place away from the public eye.

Julian Barry, whose scripts for a Broadway play and a Hollywood movie about Lenny Bruce, both titled “Lenny,” became definitive portraits of the comedian as a truth teller who drove himself mad in a righteous struggle against American hypocrisy, was found dead on Tuesday morning at his home in Beverly Hills, Calif. His daughter Julia Barry said he had died overnight in his sleep. He had been receiving medical treatment for congestive heart failure and, in recent weeks, for late-stage kidney disease. Like Marilyn Monroe and John Lennon, Mr. Bruce died young (he was 40) and became a figure of continually renewed pop-culture lore. From 2017 until this year, a fictionalized version of Mr. Bruce was a recurring character on the Amazon Prime television show “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel.”

Many of the actors’ demands mirror those of the writers, whose own strike had already brought many productions to a halt. Actors and screenwriters have not been on strike at the same time since 1960, when Marilyn Monroe was still near her peak. The first distress signal for the studios came in early June when roughly 65,000 members of the actors’ union — nearly 98 percent of voters — backed authorizing a strike. The actors’ walkout would provide additional support to the striking writers, who have been walking picket lines for more than 70 days. Read more about the writers’ strike.

“The companies have refused to meaningfully engage on some topics and on others completely stonewalled us,” Ms. Drescher said in a statement. “Until they do negotiate in good faith, we cannot begin to reach a deal.”It would be the first time that actors and screenwriters were on strike at the same time since 1960, when Marilyn Monroe was near her peak. “We are deeply disappointed that SAG-AFTRA has decided to walk away from negotiations,” the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers, which bargains on behalf of Hollywood companies, said in a statement. Many of the actors’ demands mirror those of the writers, including higher wages, increased residual payments (a type of royalty) from streaming services and aggressive guardrails around the use of artificial intelligence to preserve jobs. Guild leadership also wants new regulations regarding self-taped auditions, a pandemic phenomenon that has resulted in significantly fewer live casting sessions.

Why cities want to ban new drive-thrus

Magnets of traffic and congestion, drive-thrus discourage walking, public transit use and visits to neighboring businesses. A host of cities and regions want the sprawl to stop: Atlanta lawmakers will vote this summer on whether to ban new drive-thrus in the popular Beltline area. Minneapolis; Fair Haven, New Jersey; Creve Coeur, Missouri; Orchard Park, New York, and other cities have banned new drive-thrus in recent years. Experts say pedestrian safety can be improved by tightly managing access along arterial roads and locating drive-thrus away from them. Cities push backAtlanta City Councilman Jason Dozier proposed a bill this year to block new drive-thrus around the Atlanta Beltline, a pedestrian trail along a 22-mile railroad corridor.

“Whenever you are writing, it seems like it’s the first time,” says Oates, whose forthcoming book ‘Zero-Sum’ attends to the sinister undercurrents of home life. “I have so many ideas, and I have so many notes here at my study. I just won’t live to write them all,” Joyce Carol Oates said recently. Her oeuvre spans novels, novellas, short stories, plays, poetry, nonfiction and, occasionally, viral tweets, not to mention a Substack. When it comes to her books, the 85-year-old author has often taken on the sinister and the tragic, as with 2022’s Babysitter, a novel about a serial killer in Detroit who chases children, and Blonde (2000), a fictionalized memoir of Marilyn Monroe, which last year was adapted into a film of the same name.

Titled "DIVA", the exhibition features some 60 costumes and 250 items from screen sirens and stage stars from the 19th century to today, many displayed for the first time. "Some of this goes all the way back to the turn of the century, 1900, you know opera singers, silent film stars. It uses the objects to recount the creation of the diva, delving into personal stories and looking at performers' activism and sway on social issues, including equality and civil rights.
