This week, the pope is due to make an historic intervention in the debate around AI at the G7 summit in southern Italy’s Puglia region. AI, the pope believes, can make the world a better place only if it serves the “common good” and does not increase inequalities. European Union lawmakers have already passed a law regulating AI, while a bipartisan group of US senators have set out plans for AI regulation that could lead to federal legislation. “AI and emerging technologies are on Pope Francis’ radar screen,” Larrey, now a professor of philsophy at Boston College, told CNN. It’s clear that Francis sees AI as part of what he called the “epochal change” taking place at the beginning of the 21st century.

London CNN —Elon Musk is not happy about a new partnership between Apple and ChatGPT creator OpenAI. “Apple has no clue what’s actually going on once they hand your data over to OpenAI,” Musk said in a separate post. OpenAI’s technology will support some of these new tools — for example, allowing users to direct questions to ChatGPT via their Apple devices. Greg Brockman, OpenAI president, said late Monday that ChatGPT would be integrated into Apple’s operating systems for iPhones, iPads and Mac computers. So Musk’s employees may have limited options if he wants to ban rival AI — or even OpenAI — from his companies.

On Monday, the longtime Club holding unveiled its long-awaited generative AI initiatives, known as Apple Intelligence. It means that Apple's new AI tools should be able to boost lagging iPhone sales, which make up roughly half of the company's overall revenue. The iPhone 15 Pro and Pro Max, which were released last year, are the only versions of the smartphone currently compatible with Apple Intelligence. "Even if iPhone 15 users don't upgrade right away, they now have a very good reason to do it sooner than they otherwise would have. Taken together, these suite of features show that Siri is getting the makeover that Jim Cramer recently argued would be crucial for an iPhone upgrade cycle to ensue.

"The company made a massive switch in its consumer mix," said Sandeep Rao, a senior researcher at Leverage Shares, an investment management company. As for competition, even if Nvidia's contenders appear weak, more entrants will grab market share. Beth Kindig, the CEO and lead tech analyst for the I/O Fund, estimates that AMD's market share could reach 20%. Nvidia and AMD have similar production costs since neither makes their GPUs but uses the same supplier, Taiwan Semiconductor (TSMC). "So AMD is a little bit behind in terms of performance," Rao said.

A longtime bearish analyst on Best Buy has jumped over to our side the debate after its head-turning earnings report last week. Barry said Best Buy expects to have the largest assortment of AI PCs on sale later this month from brands such as Dell, Microsoft and HP, with "more than 40% of the assortment retail exclusive to Best Buy." Based on Monday's prices, Best Buy would need to gain nearly 59% to take out its old highs. Considering the innovation pipeline ahead, Citi analysts are optimistic Best Buy shares can go even higher. CNN —Microsoft has asked at least 100 of its employees in China to consider moving to other countries, according to Chinese state media reports. Microsoft employees, mostly involved with cloud computing, were recently offered the opportunity to work in the United States, Australia or Ireland, among other countries, state-run outlet The Paper said in a report Wednesday, citing an unnamed source. The Wall Street Journal reported Thursday that Microsoft asked as many as 800 employees — mostly engineers with Chinese nationality working on cloud computing and AI — to consider relocating. In a statement reported by Reuters, Microsoft (MSFT) said providing internal opportunities for some employees was part of its regular business and the company remained committed to China.
