Police officers involved in the deaths have become an intense focus of investigation, protest, and media coverage. Despite being at the heart of some of the most defining incidents in modern policing, most of the officers involved continue to live their lives under the radar. Insider's review of 72 cops involved in two dozen of the most notorious police killings of the past 30 years shows the many different paths officers have taken. There's no nationwide view into what happens to officers involved in egregious incidents of violence. In rare cases, cops involved in these killings have tried to publicly rehabilitate their image rather than seek out anonymity.
Biden will deliver his second State of the Union address at about 9 p.m. (0200 GMT Wednesday). It will be broadcast live on major U.S. broadcast television networks and online by the White House and the House of Representatives. The speech could deliver Biden his largest television audience of the year. The White House has also invited Brandon Tsay, who disarmed a gunman responsible for a mass shooting in Monterey Park, California. Republicans have picked Arkansas Governor Sarah Huckabee Sanders, who served as White House press secretary under Donald Trump, to deliver their response.
Following are some of the guests expected to attend:* Brandon Tsay: Tsay was called a hero by authorities for disarming a gunman who shot dead 11 people during a celebration of the Lunar New Year in Monterey Park, California. The White House called it a "recognition of sustained U.S. support for Ukraine nearly a year after Russia launched its unprovoked attack." * The White House has also invited Paul Pelosi, husband of former U.S. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi. "The attack reportedly was politically motivated, with the intruder's alleged intent to harm and kidnap the former Speaker," the White House said. The United States completed the withdrawal of its forces from Afghanistan in August 2021 after a 20-year war.
Protesters rally against the fatal police assault of Tyre Nichols, outside of the Coleman A. Five Memphis officers, also all Black, were charged with second-degree murder in the beating of Tyre Nichols, who died in hospital on January 10 three days after being stopped on suspicion of reckless driving. Durbin added that he would not rule out a federal investigation into the entire Memphis Police Department following Nichols' death. Some policing reforms were already in place in Memphis at the time of Nichols' death, including a requirement for officers to de-escalate situations where they saw others using excessive force. "Just as much those officers are responsible for the death of Tyre Nichols, so is the implicit bias police culture that exists in America," Crump told ABC's "This Week."
LONDON, Jan 24 (Reuters) - The dollar hovered near a nine-month low against the euro and surrendered recent gains against the yen on Tuesday, as traders weighed the risks of a U.S. recession against the outlook for Federal Reserve monetary policy. Euro zone data on Tuesday reinforced the view that the economy is surviving a winter of intense price pressures reasonably well, analysts said. "That's integral to our bearish U.S. dollar view, that the U.S. is not going to be the global growth leader." Elsewhere, the dollar fell 0.4% to 130.18 yen , breaking a two-day rally. Last week, the dollar fell as low as 127.215 yen, its weakest since May, before a Bank of Japan policy review as investors bet the BOJ would begin to end its stimulus programme.
Black users have long been one of Twitter’s most engaged demographics, flocking to the platform to steer online culture and drive real-world social change. But a month after Elon Musk took over, some Black influencers are eyeing the exits just as he races to shore up the company’s business. And while there is no hard data on how many Black users have either joined or left the platform over that period, some prominent influencers say they’re actively pursuing alternatives. Some signs indicate a slowdown among Black Twitter users that predates Musk. “It’s crippling to the economies of cities when Black folks leave, platforms when Black folks leave, entertainment sites when Black folks leave,” she said.
Elon Musk mocked a t-shirt with the hashtag #StayWoke, meant to support the BLM movement. The phrase "#Stay@Work" phrase likely points to reports of brutally long work weeks, mass layoffs, and mass resignations under Musk's new leadership. The original "Stay Woke" shirts were made in support of the Black Lives Matter Movement, which took off in 2016. "Here we are at the merch … and there's an entire closet full of hashtag woke t-shirts," Musk said in the video showing off the old shirts in a tweet on Tuesday. Musk and Twitter did not immediately respond to Insider's request for comment.
The shirts were promoted by Twitter cofounder Jack Dorsey and designed to promote Black Lives Matter. Musk deleted a tweet that appeared to defend the police officer who shot Michael Brown in 2014, Bloomberg reported. "Found in closet at Twitter HQ fr," Musk posted on Twitter early Wednesday morning, along with the crying-while-laughing emoji. Musk and a spokesperson for Twitter did not respond to a request for comment from Insider ahead of publication. The officer who shot Brown, Darren Wilson, had claimed he shot at Brown in self defense.

[1/2] An Easyjet aircraft approaches Josep Tarradellas Barcelona - El Prat airport the day before a cabin crew strike, while it passes next to a Stop traffic sign, near Barcelona, Spain, June 30, 2022. The UK-based airline said it was encouraging adults aged 45 and over to train as cabin crew, building on the 27% rise it has already seen in that age group for crew since 2018. EasyJet said a crew recruitment programme some months ago had over 18,000 applications for about 2,000 roles, but it was still looking for more workers. The cabin crew role would be ideal for people whose children have left home, who have customer service skills and are looking for a new challenge, said the airline. "This campaign is about challenging stereotypes about the job and showing that being cabin crew can be a job for anyone with the right skills, no matter what their age," easyJet's director of cabin services Michael Brown said in an email.
LONDON, Nov 15 (Reuters - The pound rose to its highest in almost three months against the U.S. dollar on Tuesday ahead of the UK government's budget this week, largely as the greenback came under fire. "Today is more about the high-beta currencies against the dollar making hay while the sun shines," CIBC Capital Markets head of G10 currency strategy Jeremy Stretch said. The pound was last up 1% against the dollar at $1.18785, while against the euro it was up 0.1% at 87.74 pence. "We do have the fiscal statement coming and that is going to be a sea of negativity. (Reuters) - The shooting death of teenager Michael Brown by a Ferguson, Missouri, police officer prompted the U.S. Justice Department's most significant investigation of policing practices since the beginning of the Black Lives Matter movement. The DOJ also pointed out that “police departments in surrounding municipalities and the County” have practices similar to Ferguson, although that issue was “beyond the scope” of the investigation. In fact, federal officials even considered opening another investigation of the St. Louis police department for similar problems, Reuters reported in October 2020. Ferguson officials expressed concerns that the reforms required to stop exploitative policing in their city would “cripple city finances,” Reuters reported in March 2016. (A measure to institute a modest property tax increase to fund the reforms didn't get the required two-thirds majority vote.)
Rakoczy then pressed him, asking if he'd tapped into Oath Keepers funds "quite a bit" to cover personal expenses. Rhodes, who remained outside the Capitol, testified that he thought it was "stupid" for Oath Keepers members to enter the building. From the Oath Keepers' founding, the group was focused on "forceful opposition to the government, isn't that right?" In her questioning, she also noted that the Oath Keepers provided ammunition for AR-15 rifles during the 2014 standoff at the Bundy Ranch. For Rakoczy, Rhodes' preferred image of the Oath Keepers was belied by his own messages with fellow members.

At 1000 GMT, the pound was up 0.61% against the dollar at $1.14405, and 0.35% higher versus the euro at 87.260 pence per euro. But analysts remain gloomy about the prospects for the currency given the economic outlook. "The combination of a highly concerning economic outlook and a forced dovish repricing in rate expectations look set to keep the pound rather unattractive," ING analysts wrote in a note. Quarterly GDP growth figures on Friday will also provide an important signal for the state of the UK economy. Oath Keepers founder Elmer Stewart Rhodes took the risky step of testifying in his own defense. Rhodes said he founded the Oath Keepers as a community service-minded group. "I support the right to riot," Rhodes testified, before correcting himself to say, "I support the right to protest." "Like I said," Rhodes testified, "we supported the right to protest." Rhodes also bristled at the characterization of the Oath Keepers as a racist group.
LONDON, Oct 26 (Reuters) - Sterling soared to six-week highs on Wednesday, as Britain's new Prime Minister Rishi Sunak holds his first cabinet meeting amid reports he could delay the announcement of a plan to repair the country's public finances. Sunak took power on Tuesday with a promise to fix the mistakes of his predecessor and stabilise the economy, warning Britain faced a "profound economic crisis". Foreign minister James Cleverly said on Wednesday the government's fiscal plan, scheduled for Oct. 31 and hotly anticipated by markets, could be delayed, suggesting a little more time might be needed to spell out the details. The pound was last up 1.16% against the dollar at $1.1601, and was 0.41% higher versus the euro at 86.500 pence per euro. "Things are certainly starting to look a lot more constructive for the pound," said Michael Brown, head of market intelligence at Caxton.
VIEW Rishi Sunak to become Britain's new PM, UK markets rally

LONDON, Oct 24 (Reuters) - Former British finance minister Rishi Sunak will be Britain's next prime minister after his rivals quit the race, which analysts said had relieved some of the nervousness around the outlook for the UK economy, boosting domestic markets. The new Prime Minister needs to confirm their leadership team as soon as possible and provide clarity on their strategy for stabilising the economy and their policy priorities. ART HOGAN, CHIEF MARKET STRATEGIST, B. RILEY WEALTH, NEW YORK:"Coming to a very rapid decision on who the prime minister is going be certainly breathes a sigh of relief into the markets. RUTH GREGORY, SENIOR UK ECONOMIST, CAPITAL ECONOMICS, LONDON:"The fall in gilt yields on the news today that Rishi Sunak will become the UK’s next Prime Minister has reduced the chances of a significant fiscal consolidation. With the pound, just because we have a new Prime Minister in place, all of the issues don't just go away and we still have remarkable strength being enjoyed by the dollar."
Michael Brown was director of a branch of the Pentagon that aims to identify and accelerate the adoption of technologies built in Silicon Valley that would enhance the military’s capabilities. Michael Brown , who led the Silicon Valley outpost of the Pentagon, has left the Defense Department to join early-stage venture firm Shield Capital as it seeks to back new defense technologies amid rising global tensions. Mr. Brown has joined a group of military veterans turned venture capitalists, the San Francisco-based firm said Tuesday, where he will invest in startups building technology for the future of warfare and geopolitical conflict.
"Yesterday's risk-on vibe looks to be continuing into today's session," said Michael Brown, head of market intelligence at payments firm Caxton in London. Against a basket of currencies, the dollar was 0.05% higher at 112.13, after having earlier slipped to a near two-week low of 111.76. The risk-sensitive New Zealand dollar rose about 0.71% to $0.5676, taking support from hotter-than-expected consumer inflation data which bolstered bets for further rate hikes. Bitcoin was 0.4% lower at $19,440.17, clinging close to the levels it has traded at for the last four weeks.
And Walker’s campaign told NBC News that it has ordered 1,000 imitation plastic law enforcement badges that say “I’m with Herschel” as a fundraising tool. “Herschel Walker has been a friend to law enforcement and has a record of honoring police,” said Gail Gitcho, the Walker campaign strategist who ordered the badges Saturday. "It just gives us a chance to talk about Herschel’s support of law enforcement and law enforcement's support for him. If he said, ‘I’m a law enforcement officer and I have these powers,’ then I have a problem with that. Asked whether he had a problem with Walker’s flashing the honorary badge onstage, Wilcher said: “No.

Jeremy Hunt on Friday replaced Kwasi Kwarteng, who Prime Minister Liz Truss sacked following the so-called "mini-budget" on Sept. 23 that sent UK assets sliding. Hunt on Monday announced a series of tax changes that he said would raise 32 billion pounds ($36.19 billion) a year in extra revenues. STERLING: The pound rose against the dollar and the euro, gaining 1.1% and 0.7%, respectively , . So the UK is not the outlier when it comes to its monetary policy and its fiscal policy. By 0746 GMT, the British pound was up 0.1% against the dollar to $1.0969, snapping five days of losses. Until the market gets that I think any Sterling rallies are ripe to be sold into," Brown added. "Further rises in Bank Rate are warranted," Lloyds Bank senior economist Hann-Ju Ho said in a note, even as he expects the economy to contract in the third quarter. Looking ahead, the BoE's Financial Policy Committee is scheduled to publish its latest financial policy summary and record at 0930 GMT. Meanwhile, BoE policy makers Jonathan Haskel (0800 GMT), Huw Pill (1135 GMT) and Catherine Mann (1700 GMT) are all scheduled to speak later in the day.

Britain's blue-chip stocks (.FTSE)remained mired in the red, in line with a broader equity-market decline. FOREX: Sterling extended losses, falling 1.9% on the day to around $1.1047, having hit a new 37-year low earlier on. British homebuilders and household goods makers hit session highs, buoyed by the prospect of consumers getting tax breaks. The tax-cutting budget and ‘go for broke’ growth aims are unlikely to change the longer-term bearish GBP trend." If you get more fiscal stimulus and less monetary stimulus, that’s something that’s buoyant for the currency.
