Drivers pay gas taxes that go toward road repair and maintenance. But EV drivers don't buy gas, and some states say they're losing money as fewer drivers paying taxes. In Texas, EV drivers are getting hit with some of the highest fees to make up for it. The costly EV registration fees are designed to level the playing field. Steep EV registration fees are something that many industry observers say serve as yet another barrier to EV adoption.

Quiz: How Much Do You Know About the U.S. State Flags? You probably would have no trouble identifying the Lone Star Flag of Texas or naming a grizzly bear as the animal that appears on California's flag. It's also likely that you could pick the Wisconsin and Oklahoma flags out of a lineup — the names of those states are helpfully printed in big, bold letters on their banners. But could you name the four states that do not feature a shade of blue on their flags? With lawmakers in several states considering new designs, here’s a chance to test your knowledge on the country’s 50 state flags.

Renewable energy has kept the power grid "remarkably stable" despite the significant strain, an expert says. Texas leads the nation in wind-generated power and is third in the country for solar power. As these extreme temperatures continue to bake Texas, residents are cranking up their air conditioning, straining the state's power grid. Texas produces more wind-powered electricity than any other state and is a national leader in solar energy alongside California and Florida. Some state and national Republicans, however, have pushed back against legislation that would further strengthen the clean energy sources keeping the air conditioners running in Texas this summer.

REUTERS/Charles Platiau/File PhotoWASHINGTON, Aug 3 (Reuters) - Texas won a round in its antitrust lawsuit with Alphabet's (GOOGL.O) Google on Thursday after a U.S. judicial panel refused to pause its decision to return its lawsuit to federal court in Texas. Judicial Panel on Multidistrict Litigation had decided in June to agree to a Texas request to send the lawsuit alleging Google abused its dominance in advertising technology back to the Lone Star state. Texas has argued that a measure which became law in 2022, after the lawsuit was filed, granted state attorneys general the right to choose where an antitrust lawsuit will be litigated. The judicial panel did agree to stay the remand order for seven days to give Google time to appeal to the 2nd U.S. The Texas lawsuit accuses Google of violating the law by dominating the process that advertisers use to put ads online.

CNN —Texas has separated at least 26 migrant family units on the southern border since July 10 under Gov. Greg Abbott’s Operation Lone Star border initiative, according to Texas Rio Grande Legal Aid immigration attorney Kristin Etter. “This is just a very harsh and cruel detour from the asylum process,” Etter told CNN in an interview Wednesday. This is a shift in Texas DPS policy on the border, Etter says. Children and their mothers were never separated, but instead turned over to the US Border Patrol together,” Texas DPS Communications Chief Travis Considine said in a statement.

Thank wind and solar, energy experts say. “The thermal plants have bounced up and down,” Lewin told CNN, saying thermal plant outages during heatwaves have been high by Texas grid manager ERCOT’s own standards. The state is also rapidly installing battery storage, to store wind and solar energy when the sun isn’t shining and wind isn’t blowing. “I think what they’re leaving out is the intermittency of the thermal plants, they continue to neglect that,” Lewin said. Lone star ticks, which scientists believe are the primary culprits of the disease in the United States, can transmit the sugar to people through a bite. Even patients who have the syndrome may not feel sick every time they eat meat. “It’s consistently inconsistent,” Dr. Salzer said. Until August 2021, a single commercial lab did nearly all of this antibody testing in the United States. In one of the new studies, researchers reviewed the results of the antibody tests performed at this lab from 2017 to 2022.

Along Texas’ 1,200-mile-long border with Mexico, state troopers routinely arrest migrants for trespassing. Texas National Guard troops unspool razor wire along the banks of the Rio Grande. Greg Abbott has been testing the legal limits of what a state can do to enforce immigration law. He has overseen aggressive deterrence by state police officers at the border and mounted a brazen challenge to federal authority by placing a floating barrier in the middle of the Rio Grande. In the small border city of Eagle Pass, the state police bulldozed vegetation from a sandbar in the middle of the river last month to create a new security outpost.

This “prevention through deterrence” framework risks worsening the humanitarian crisis at the border. Mr. Biden must change course, and that begins by stopping Mr. Abbott. The president should order the immediate removal of the lethal razor wire and obstructions in the Rio Grande and ensure that Border Patrol are unimpeded by Texas Department of Public Safety officers— today. And I can see why it might be tempting to allow the governor to assume ownership over the Texas border rather than pursue a public confrontation on an issue that is this politically charged. Be on the right side of history, demonstrate the kind of strong, decisive leadership that Americans are desperate for, and the politics will follow.

WASHINGTON, July 24 (Reuters) - The U.S. Justice Department on Monday sued Texas over floating barriers installed by the state in the Rio Grande river to block migrants crossing from Mexico. "This floating barrier poses threats to navigation and public safety and presents humanitarian concerns." The lawsuit, filed in the U.S. District Court in the Western District of Texas, seeks "to remove all structures and obstructions, including a floating barrier and all infrastructure related to the floating barrier, in the Rio Grande," according to the court filing. In recent months, National Guard troops have strung up razor wire to block migrants from crossing the Rio Grande. The number of migrants caught crossing the U.S.-Mexico border illegally has dropped since Biden implemented a restrictive new asylum policy in May.

“The recent heat waves and scorching summer temperatures demonstrate the economic cost of heat stress,” Chris Lafakis, Moody’s Analytics’ director of economic research, wrote in an emailed response to a CNN query. Moody’s Analytics estimates that chronic physical risk from heat stress could reduce worldwide GDP by up to 17.6% by 2100. The losses are steepest in sectors such as agriculture and construction, but no industry or business is immune, she said. “Every summer we have a stretch [of excessively hot weather], where it might last from four days up to a week,” he said. “We have to look at the potential of our business model shifting to a nine-month facility going forward,” she said.

What you need to know about ticks
  + stars: | 2023-07-22 | by ( Kate Golembiewski | ) edition.cnn.com   time to read: +8 min
There are more than 800 species of ticks found around the world, and 84 that have been documented in the United States. The most common ones are blacklegged ticks (also known as deer ticks, but they feed on lots of animals besides deer), lone star ticks, American dog ticks and brown dog ticks. Both male and female ticks feed on blood by inserting their barbed, straw-like mouthparts into the skin of their host (unlike mosquitoes, which only bite if they’re females preparing to lay eggs). However, only female ticks drink to the point that they become engorged. Yes, they can be a public health concern, but we don’t want you to let ticks keep you indoors,” she said.

The Department of Justice has warned Texas that its border policies violate federal law. Texas' actions "violate federal law" and "present serious risks to public safety," it said. Of particular concern is a floating barrier that Texas recently placed in the Rio Grande. "This floating barrier poses a risk to navigation, as well as public safety, in the Rio Grande River, and it presents humanitarian concerns," the department said. Texas' actions "violate federal law, raise humanitarian concerns, present serious risks to public safety and the environment, and may interfere with the federal government's ability to carry out its official duties," the department said.
