China debuts its first overwater high-speed train
  + stars: | 2023-09-29 | by ( Lilit Marcus | ) edition.cnn.com   time to read: +2 min
The maximum speed of the trains along this route is 350 kilometers (217 miles) per hour, according to China Railway, the state railway operator. The first train on this line debuted on Thursday, September 28, departing from Fuzhou, the province’s capital, at 9:15 a.m. China Railway says that it used intelligent robots and environmentally friendly corrosion-resistant steel to build out the overwater rail sections. Fujian province is also significant for being the closest part of mainland China to the self-governing island of Taiwan. The plan would turn Kinmen into a “peace island,” or a sort of DMZ between Taiwan and China.

When North Korea slammed its already tight borders closed in 2020, he was one of many travel industry professionals left out in the proverbial cold. One of Cockerell’s business concerns, he says, is that a lack of search engine interest in North Korea trips could hurt his website’s visibility on Google. In 2017, the United States banned its passport holders from traveling to North Korea and has renewed this ban through at least 2024. The 2017 ban on American travel to North Korea came shortly after the death of Otto Warmbier, a recent college graduate from Ohio who participated in a Young Pioneer Tours group trip to North Korea. Warmbier was detained in North Korea in 2016 for allegedly stealing a propaganda poster and held for 17 months.

Passengers flying with Korean Air in the next few weeks may be asked to take one additional step before boarding – getting on the scale. Korean Air is one of the many airlines around the globe that is required to periodically obtain plane weight data. If a passenger would prefer not to have their weight data collected, Korean Air confirms that they can opt out by letting a staff member know. No one can see your weight, not even us,” a representative from Air NZ, the country’s national carrier, said at the time. Once data is gathered, it helps airlines make decisions about fuel needs and weight distribution on board.

CNN —Flights between North Korea and Russia are set to resume for the first time since the Covid-19 pandemic. Air Koryo, North Korea’s national airline, is operating four flights between Pyongyang and Vladivostok, in southeast Russia, this month for the first time since 2020, a Vladivostok airport official confirmed to CNN. North Korea, which already has some of the world’s most tightly controlled borders, essentially sealed off the country during the coronavirus pandemic. As a result, several Russian diplomats had to take drastic measures to leave their posts in North Korea during the pandemic. According to information shared by the Russian embassy at the time, the pushcart ride was only one part of a two-day journey to leave North Korea.

That’s right: New Zealand’s Civil Aviation Authority is requiring that its national airline weigh passengers departing on international flights from Auckland International Airport through July 2, 2023. The program, which Air New Zealand calls a passenger weight survey, is a way to gather data on the weight load and distribution for planes, the airline said. This isn’t the first time that Air NZ has asked passengers to step on the scales before boarding their flights. Domestic passengers took part in a survey in 2021, but the one for international travelers was delayed due to the pandemic. The 17-hour flagship route was launched last fall as a lynchpin of Air NZ’s post-pandemic strategy.

Kathmandu CNN —British mountaineer Kenton Cool has set a record for the most Mount Everest summits by a non-Nepali after reaching the top of the world’s highest mountain for the 17th time. On Monday, 46-year-old Pasang Dawa Sherpa reached the mountain’s apex for the 26th time, tying his countryman Kami Rita Sherpa for the number of all-time ascents. “Unfortunately, when accidents do happen on the mountain, more often than not the tragedy tends to strike the Nepalese workers who are there supporting foreign climbers,” Ballinger told CNN. That’s the hope for Exmouth and the surrounding Ningaloo Coast in Western Australia, which are hoping that April 20th’s once-in-a-decade natural phenomenon could kick off a tourism boom that lasts well beyond the eclipse. “They’re pretty intimidated but also very excited,” Roger Cook, Deputy Premier of Western Australia state, tells CNN about the residents of Exmouth. And there’s some evidence of the region’s growing prominence on the international stage: CNN Travel selected Western Australia for our list of the best places to visit in 2023. Altogether, Western Australia state spent 20 million AUD ($13.5 million) on infrastructure updates for the eclipse, which included everything from water and sanitation services to additional parking.
