Amazon's satellite internet unit, Project Kuiper, will begin mass-producing the satellites later this year, the company said. The 2024 deployment target would keep Amazon on track to fulfill a regulatory mandate to launch half its entire Kuiper network of 3,236 satellites by 2026. Amazon plans to launch a pair of prototype satellites early this year aboard a new rocket from the Boeing-Lockheed joint venture United Launch Alliance. The 2024 launch, carrying the initial production satellites, is expected to be the first of many more in a swift deployment campaign using rockets Amazon procured in 2021 and 2022. The company on Tuesday also revealed a slate of three different terminals, or antennas, that will connect customers with its Kuiper satellites in orbit.
What we're finding is that, with the new launch capabilities of vehicles like Starship, there's actually an interesting opportunity to go the opposite direction," Karan Kunjur told CNBC. Los Angeles-based startup K2 Space, co-founded by CEO Karan Kunjur and CTO Neel Kunjur, is setting out to build satellite buses — the physical structure of a spacecraft that provides power, movement and more. A pair of brothers is aiming to challenge the way spacecraft are built, by going against the industry trend and designing massive satellites in a bet that towering rockets such as SpaceX's Starship are the way forward. K2 Space, a play on the brothers' surname and a nod to astronomer Nikolai Kardashev's scales of civilization, marks Karan and Neel's first venture together and fuses their previously divergent careers. For K2, the company is targeting prices that would be unheard of for satellite buses of these sizes.
Vulcan Centaur is expected to serve as United Launch Alliance’s main rocket offering going forward. The launch company owned by Boeing Co. and Lockheed Martin Corp. is targeting late spring for the initial flight of a powerful new rocket it has been developing, a major test of the delayed vehicle. United Launch Alliance now plans to blast off Vulcan Centaur, as the rocket is called, for the first time in early May, ULA Chief Executive Tory Bruno said Thursday evening. The new time frame represents another slip for the flight, which the company had been targeting for the first quarter of this year.
Earlier this month the Space Force kicked off the process to buy five years worth of launches, under a lucrative program known as National Security Space Launch Phase 3. The U.S. military is preparing to buy another round of rocket launches from companies next year, and Space Force leadership says they're taking a new "mutual fund approach" to the acquisition strategy. But, with a number of companies bringing rockets to market, Space Force is splitting NSSL Phase 3 into two groups for about 70 launches. Space Force leadership named several companies that can now compete in the dual-track process, including Rocket Lab , Relativity and ABL Space. Separately, Space Force is closely watching the growing demand for commercial launches.
WASHINGTON, Feb 9 (Reuters) - Blue Origin, the private space company founded by billionaire Jeff Bezos, was awarded its first interplanetary NASA contract on Thursday to launch a mission next year to study the magnetic field around Mars, the U.S. space agency and company said. Blue Origin has flown previous NASA missions with its smaller, suborbital New Shepard rocket, which can carry research payloads on short, microgravity trips to the edge of space and back. Blue Origin, known for its astro-tourism business for wealthy customers and celebrities, is one of 13 firms NASA chose last year for its Venture-class Acquisition of Dedicated and Rideshare missions (VADR) program. VADR essentially is intended to spur private development of private space launch vehicles by assigning lower-cost NASA science missions to new rockets with an unproven record and higher chance of failure. Blue Origin also declined to discuss financial details.

Dec 18 (Reuters) - U.S. defense contractor L3Harris Technologies Inc (LHX.N) said on Sunday it would buy Aerojet Rocketdyne Holdings Inc (AJRD.N) in a $4.7 billion all-cash transaction, as it looks to tap into rising demand for missiles amid the Ukraine conflict. Reuetrs had first reported on Saturday that L3Harris was nearing the deal to acquire U.S. rocket maker Aerojet. The deal, which is expected to be completed in 2023, would add on to L3Harris' Space & Airborne Systems unit, which makes electronic warfare equipment and avionics sensors. Aerojet develops and manufactures liquid and solid rocket propulsion and hypersonic engines for space, defense, civil and commercial applications. Aerojet makes the RS-25 engines for NASA's launch vehicle, as well as the RL10 engines that power launch vehicles made by United Launch Alliance, a joint venture between Boeing Co (BA.N) and Lockheed Martin.
Elon Musk has stoked his ongoing rivalry with Jeff Bezos. Responding to a tweet suggesting the Amazon founder "copies" every business move he makes, Musk said, apparently sarcastically: "Maybe it's a coincidence." Musk has been feuding with Jeff Bezos for some 15 years and regularly accuses him of being a copycat. The Amazon founder has long had an interest in space exploration, starting up spaceflight firm Blue Origin in 2000. Musk founded his own commercial space firm SpaceX two years later.
CNN —SpaceX’s Falcon Heavy — a towering, three-pronged vehicle that is the most powerful operational rocket in the world — returned to the skies on Tuesday for the first time since mid-2019. Since that first test mission, SpaceX has launched only two other Falcon Heavy missions, both in 2019. SpaceX’s workhorse Falcon 9 rocket, on the other hand, has launched nearly 50 missions so far this year alone. With each Falcon Heavy launch, the rocket puts on a dramatic showing back on Earth. After Tuesday’s mission, the company only attempted to recover two of the Falcon Heavy rocket’s first-stage rocket boosters.
Amazon said Thursday it will open a new plant in a Seattle suburb to build satellites for Project Kuiper. Unveiled in 2019, Project Kuiper, is Amazon's plan to build a network of 3,236 satellites in low Earth orbit to provide high-speed broadband internet. Amazon notched a key milestone in 2020 when the Federal Communications Commission authorized the satellite internet system. Amazon has said it plans to invest more than $10 billion into building Project Kuiper, and it already has a 219,000-square-foot research and development facility based in Redmond, Washington. WATCH: How Amazon's Project Kuiper is taking on SpaceX's Starlink satellite internet
Amazon is switching the rockets used to carry the first of its two Project Kuiper satellites. Amazon originally scheduled the launch for late 2022 but said lift-off will now be in early 2023. A rival to SpaceX's Starlink, Project Kuiper is Amazon's project that involves building a network of more than 3,200 low-orbit satellites to provide a global broadband network. The two prototype satellites will be used to run tests, ahead of the first commercial launches of Amazon's production version of the satellites. ABL president, Dan Piemont, told CNBC on Wednesday, that the company finished work on a custom spacecraft for Project Kuiper earlier this year.
WASHINGTON, Oct 12 (Reuters) - Amazon (AMZN.O) will launch its first two prototype satellites for a planned internet-from-space constellation in early 2023 using a new rocket from the Boeing-Lockheed (BA.N)(LMT.N) joint venture United Launch Alliance, the companies said Wednesday. Rocket development delays with launch startup ABL Space Systems, which was initially poised to launch the two Amazon satellites by late this year, prompted Amazon to hop aboard ULA's new Vulcan rocket instead as a secondary payload. Amazon has not said when it plans to launch those first operational satellites. ABL built a custom launch adapter and finished other custom work for the Kuiper satellites earlier this year, the company's president Dan Piemont told Reuters in an email. "That work is continuing for future Kuiper launches," he added.

Amazon is swapping rides for the first prototype satellites for its Project Kuiper internet network, the company announced on Wednesday, a move that delays launching the pair of spacecraft to early next year. Instead, the Amazon satellites will hitch a ride on the first launch of ULA's Vulcan, which is planned for the first quarter. Amazon isn't ditching ABL entirely, however, saying it plans to retain two launches with the rocket company for future missions. He also emphasized that ABL has a backlog of missions from customers including the U.S. Space Force and Lockheed Martin.
WASHINGTON, Oct 10 (Reuters) - United Launch Alliance has pushed the debut launch of its new Vulcan rocket to early 2023 at the request of one of its customers, the company's chief executive said, further delaying a benchmark mission crucial to the Boeing-Lockheed joint venture's launch business. Vulcan, a roughly 200 foot-tall rocket in the final stages of development, will be the centerpiece to ULA's launch business. Vulcan, priced at roughly $110 million per launch, already has some 80 contracted missions lined up. It will compete with SpaceX's Falcon 9, priced roughly $62 million per launch, and Blue Origin's forthcoming New Glenn rocket, which uses the same engines as Vulcan. If Astrobotic's lander is delayed beyond Q1 2023, ULA would replace it with a pickup truck-sized dummy payload in order to meet the narrowing window of time to demonstrate Vulcan for the Space Force.

The US Space Force approved SpaceX to launch spy satellites on the Falcon Heavy rocket, per Bloomberg. Falcon Heavy is the world's most powerful rocket and has three reusable boosters. The Space Force told Bloomberg the first launch will be between October and December. The launches will come under the National Security Space Launch mission, the Space Force told Bloomberg in a statement. SpaceX and the Space Force didn't immediately respond to Insider's requests for comment made outside of normal working hours.
Jeff Bezos astonished ULA boss Tory Bruno with his rocket knowledge, per The Washington Post. Bruno told The Post that Bezos was "the real deal" and wasn't faking it. Bezos' Blue Origin and Bruno's ULA agreed in 2014 to build rocket engines but delays have occurred. Bruno told the newspaper that he and Bezos "hit it off right away." Since the agreement in 2014, the relationship between Blue Origin and ULA has reportedly been rocky.
