LeBron James joined yet another exclusive club, and he’ll have plenty of familiar faces alongside him at the NBA All-Star Game. James is an All-Star — and an All-Star starter — for the 20th time, with the league unveiling the results of this season’s starter balloting on Thursday night. Durant is a 14-time selection now, one of only 11 players in NBA history to be picked that many times. Tatum set an All-Star Game record last season, scoring 55 points in Salt Lake City on the way to MVP honors. This year’s All-Star Game goes back to the traditional East-vs.-West format, which was utilized in the first 66 NBA midseason classics.

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — For Dejan Milojević, the Golden State Warriors and Atlanta Hawks stood united on one sideline near their team benches and listened as the Serbian national anthem played in his honor. Golden State returned to the court for the first time since losing its beloved assistant coach last week in Salt Lake City. Two members of the Hawks were right next to Warriors coach Steve Kerr as he spoke of Milojević's profound impact on every person he encountered. Hawks assistant coach Igor Kokoskov was the Serbian national team coach and hired Milojević onto his staff. Some movers are giving up on Los Angeles and Dallas for smaller cities in Texas and Nevada. The cherry on top is the relatively affordable real estate compared to other cities. That lump sum of cash got some movers in the door, but the booming job market and relatively affordable housing are keeping them there. In the year ahead, the use of biometrics — an individual’s unique physical identifiers, such as fingerprints and faces — will be expanded at airports in the United States and abroad, a shift to enhance security, replace physical identification such as passports and driver’s licenses, and reduce the amount of time required by travelers to pass through airports. Biometric technology will be seen everywhere from bag drops at the check-in counters to domestic security screening. This program is currently available at 30 airports nationwide, including Salt Lake City International Airport and Denver International Airport; the T.S.A. said it will expand to more than 400 airports in the coming years. The pilot program is now available at five airports, including La Guardia Airport and Los Angeles International Airport.

CNN —It was supposed to be a routine court appearance this week for Nicholas Rossi, who is facing a rape charge in Utah. After he was arrested in 2021 in Scotland, Rossi described himself as an Irish orphan who had never visited the United States. He denied being a rape suspect and gave his name as "Arthur Knight Brown." In Scotland, Rossi often appeared in court via video, saying he was not well enough to attend in person. “He appears today as Arthur Knight but has previously been identified by medical professionals and civilians as Nicholas Rossi,” the prosecutor told the court.

With 2023 in the rearview mirror, we look ahead at what travelers will face in 2024. At United Airlines, for example, smarter software can offer rebooking options and issue food and lodging vouchers when a flight is canceled, rather than just rebooking a flight. United Airlines has suspended its flights indefinitely, said Josh Freed, a United spokesman. A video of a woman filming herself getting laid off from Cloudflare went viral on Tiktok. Over the last year, we've seen similar TikToks of people filming themselves getting laid off. Last week, one in particular made headlines as the young woman getting laid off from CloudFlare pushed back at the HR rep leading the call. It won't necessarily stop you from getting laid off if the ax falls on your department, but demystifying the process is good for workers.

SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — The U.S. Forest Service on Wednesday withdrew its approval of a right-of-way permit that would have allowed the construction of a railroad project through about 12 miles (19 kilometers) of roadless, protected forest in northeastern Utah. It would allow them to access larger markets and ultimately sell to refineries near the Gulf of Mexico. An attempt to reach the Seven County Infrastructure Coalition, which is spearheading the project, was unsuccessful Wednesday evening. In the August ruling, the Washington, D.C.-based appeals court decided that a 2021 environmental impact statement and opinion from the federal Surface Transportation Board were rushed and violated federal laws. The Forest Service's decision Wednesday to withdraw its approval was based on the appeals court ruling, but Ashley National Forest Supervisor Susan Eickhoff said the agency could issue a new decision if deficiencies in the environmental impact statement are addressed.

BUFFALO, N.Y. (AP) — Brutally cold temperatures and dangerous wind chills stayed put across much of the U.S. Monday, promising the coldest temperatures ever for Iowa's presidential nominating contest, holding up travelers, and testing the mettle of NFL fans in Buffalo for a playoff game that was delayed a day by wind-whipped snow. Saco, Montana, dropped to minus 51 F (minus 26 C). Subzero lows reached as far south as Kansas, Missouri, Illinois and parts of Indiana, Taylor said. The person killed — the fifth death nationwide attributed to the Arctic cold — was among four snowmobilers attempting to cross U.S. Highway 40 in the Strawberry Reservoir area. Ice jam warnings were issued in Wyoming and Montana, where the bitter cold could cause rivers and streams to lock up with ice and overflow their banks.

Millennial homebuyers aren't just leaving the urban core — they're moving to the farthest reaches of the suburbs. The 'youthification' of cities and far-flung suburbsFor nearly two decades millennials morphed dense, amenity-rich urban neighborhoods across America into exclusive playgrounds for the young and childless. Compared with Gen Xers and baby boomers, a much larger share of millennials moved to cities in their young adulthood — and stayed for longer. The pandemic only steepened a trend that's been ousting millennials from cities for years: rising housing costs in cities. Millennials could help transform suburban sprawl into town-like communities or small cities with more third places and a stronger sense of community, Panova says.

But home prices are still on the rise, according to a November 28 note from Selma Hepp, the chief economist at CoreLogic. The outcome is that many remain renters, which drives up demand for rental property and the cost of rent. If the cost of rent is 20% below the price of owning a home monthly, then it may be comparable. Rent prices are based on listings from Rent.com. For example, take the cost of rent over five years; let's say it's $3,000 x 12 months = $36,000 annually.

Washington, DC CNN —US economic growth was even stronger in the third quarter than previously estimated, underscoring the economy’s remarkable resilience in the face of elevated inflation and high borrowing costs earlier this year. Wednesday’s latest reading reflects an even faster pace of growth than the blistering 4.9% rate the department initially estimated. Nonresidential fixed investment, or business spending, was revised up to a growth rate of 1.3% in the third quarter from a decline of 0.1%. Fourth-quarter spending likely won’t be as piping hot, however. Fed officials pay close attention to various facets of the US economy when deliberating monetary policy, including growth.
