CNN —Families of hostages held captive in Gaza condemned Benjamin Netanyahu’s speech to the United States Congress, as pressure grows on the Israeli prime minister to agree to a deal to secure their release. Rather than mentioning a deal, a bellicose Netanyahu told Congress: “The war in Gaza could end tomorrow if Hamas surrenders, disarms and returns all the hostages. Families of Israeli hostages demonstrate ahead of Netanyahu's address to Congress, at the National Mall in Washington, DC, July 23, 2024. An hour of talking without saying the one sentence: ‘There will be a kidnapping deal.’”But Netanyahu’s speech was lauded by members of his government. Anna Moneymaker/Getty ImagesDemocratic Rep. "These conditions have allowed, in some instances, the biggest technology companies to get a layup in the AI space," Khan said. In particular, Khan called for AI models' weights to be publicly available. In the age of AI, Khan said both consumers and enterprises are uncertain of their data's protections when using foundation models. "We only focus on deals that have problems…it's a narrow set of deals that satisfy a narrow set of criteria." Israeli forces retrieved the bodies of five hostages from a tunnel in the southern Gaza Strip, the military said on Thursday, amid growing international and domestic pressure for a cease-fire deal that would lead to the release of the remaining captives. The tunnel shaft was nearly 220 yards long and more than 20 yards underground, with several rooms, the military said. Israel has said that Hamas — which led the attack on Israel on Oct. 7 that prompted the war in Gaza — has exploited the designated humanitarian zone to launch rockets at Israel, as well as to use it for other military purposes. Aid groups have lamented that Israel has struck the area despite telling Gazans they would be safer there. Hamas had no immediate response.

Israeli forces retrieved the bodies of five Israeli hostages held in Gaza, the Israeli military said on Thursday, amid growing international pressure for a cease-fire deal that would involve the release of the remaining captives. The five hostages — Maya Goren, 56; Tomer Ahimas, 20; Kiril Brodski, 19; Oren Goldin, 33; and Ravid Katz, 51 — were already presumed dead by Israeli officials. Mr. Brodski and Mr. Ahimas were soldiers who fell during the Hamas-led attack on Oct. 7, while the other three were civilians whose bodies were brought back to Gaza as bargaining chips. The Israeli military said that the bodies were found in the Khan Younis area on Wednesday and that intelligence — including information from detained Palestinian militants — had guided forces to their location. Israeli officials say 115 hostages remain in Gaza, including 40 who are presumed dead.

Suleiman’s denial is part of a policy recently communicated to medical missions going into Gaza through Israel. Before the war, Palestinian medics and medics of Palestinian heritage who held other passports could apply to Israel for entry into Gaza and have no issues getting approval. Ambulances lined up in front of the Egyptian side of the Rafah crossing during a visit of United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres on March 23. “We reiterate that we STRONGLY advice (sic) against any attempt of entering Gaza with a Palestinian background/roots,” the email stated. The ad disclosed that “applicants with a Palestinian ID or Palestinian roots are not allowed into Gaza.” The post has since been deleted.

The Federal Trade Commission is launching an investigation into so-called "surveillance pricing," seeking more information about how artificial intelligence is used to change pricing rapidly based on data about customer behavior and characteristics. The FTC says the practice allows companies to charge different customers, different prices. "Firms that harvest Americans' personal data can put people's privacy at risk," FTC Chair Lina Khan said in a news release. Kahn describes surveillance pricing as a "shadowy ecosystem of pricing middlemen." Mastercard said in a statement, "We will cooperate with the FTC in this process."

Before last week’s Republican convention, Donald Trump seemed to be moving away from the populism that characterized his 2016 campaign. “He’s defending big business, cozying up to billionaires, and wooing C.E.O.s.”When Mr. Trump named Senator JD Vance of Ohio as his running mate, though, pundits quickly concluded that he was doubling down on populism. In his convention speech, Mr. Vance denounced NAFTA and China trade deals and promised to prioritize American workers over multinational corporations. On the other hand, in a long interview with Bloomberg (conducted in late June) that came out after the announcement of Mr. Vance’s selection, Mr. Trump hardly sounded like a firebrand economic populist. He floated the idea of reducing corporate tax rates to 15 percent and said he’d consider the JPMorgan Chase C.E.O., Jamie Dimon, as a potential Treasury secretary.

London CNN —Spanish artist Almudena Romero is known for creating artworks that use plants as her medium. Almudena Romero “The Pigment Change” series has a chapter called “Family Album,” in which Romero projects a negative onto live watercress, using the plants’ natural photosynthesis to create areas of light and dark. Almudena Romero This artwork, which was exhibited this year on International Women’s Day, is a tribute to a childhood friend. Almudena Romero Romero questions the long-term future of conventional photographic film, when the materials needed to produce it are limited. But for Romero, plants are much more than something to look after: they’re beings we can learn from.

The military said it was moving further into Khan Younis because Hamas was trying to regroup there and had used part of what was designated a humanitarian zone to fire rockets toward Israel. The military also noted that it had warned civilians earlier on Monday, before it began its operations, to leave the “specific areas of Khan Younis,” shrinking the zone it had identified for people displaced from their homes by the war. The Gazan health ministry said 70 bodies were brought to Nasser Hospital, and at least 200 other people had been wounded, figures that could not be confirmed independently, adding that others were almost certainly buried under rubble. The Palestine Red Crescent said its teams in the area had dealt with at least 12 people who had been killed and 50 wounded. Mohammed Saqer, the director general of nursing at Nasser Hospital in Khan Younis, said hundreds of injured men, women, children and older people had been brought to the hospital, which lacked mattresses, blankets, syringes and other essentials.

CNN —The highly infectious polio virus has been found in sewage samples in Gaza, putting thousands of Palestinians at risk of contracting a disease that can cause paralysis. Gaza’s Ministry of Health and the World Health Organization (WHO) both said they had carried out tests and found samples of the virus in sewage water. “Poliovirus type 2 (VDPV2) had been identified at six locations in sewage samples collected on 23 June from Khan Younis and Deir al Balah,” WHO said Friday. The Palestinian Ministry of Health in Gaza called for practices to improve hygiene and safety. Meanwhile, hospitals in central Gaza said more than 20 people were killed after two Israeli air strikes on houses in the Nuseirat area.

CNN —Huge protests across Bangladesh escalated into deadly violence this week with clashes between students, pro-government supporters and armed police fueling widespread anger over civil service job quotas opponents say are discriminatory. Many Bangladeshi students are demanding an end to the government’s quota system, which reserves more than half of civil service posts for certain groups. In 2018, the quota system was scrapped following similar protests but in June the High Court reinstated it, ruling its removal was unconstitutional. Critics and protesters say the quota system creates a two-tier Bangladesh where a politically connected elite benefit by their birth. “This is not just about quota protests anymore, this is much bigger than that, in simple quota protests the government wouldn’t go around hurting and shooting students.

But there’s a small, powerful sect of Silicon Valley billionaires who are carving a path for the maybe-Trumpers and the MAGA-curious in the tech world. David Sacks, the billionaire tech investor, co-hosted a fundraiser last month at his San Francisco home and spoke at the Republican National Convention on Monday. In the last election cycle, the few Trump backers that existed in the Valley largely kept their support under the radar. J.D. Vance’s A.I. Agenda: Reduce Regulation

Vance, Republican of Ohio, is a strong skeptic of regulating artificial intelligence. He’s also in favor of reining in Big Tech, companies he says have grown so powerful that they stymie smaller companies’ ability to succeed. That seeming contradiction could play a role in shaping the Trump administration’s stance on A.I. And he has strong ties with some of the tech industry’s most powerful backers, many of whom fund smaller A.I. Last week, during a committee hearing on privacy and A.I., Mr. Vance accused Big Tech companies of predicting that A.I.
