Nine people were killed and one person was seriously injured after the sport utility vehicle they were traveling in veered off the road and overturned into a South Florida canal on Monday evening, the authorities said. The crash took place just before 7:30 p.m. in the 5800 block of Hatton Highway, a two-lane road that runs through an agricultural area of Belle Glade, a city of more than 16,000 residents in the western part of Palm Beach County in South Florida, according to the Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office. The authorities said that 10 people — including five children — were traveling westbound in a 2023 Ford Explorer when it approached a 90-degree curve in the road. “For undetermined reasons,” the sheriff’s office said in a crash report, the vehicle “failed to properly negotiate the left curve of the roadway.”

The grainy photos released by LAPD on Sunday show three individuals wearing hooded sweatshirts, and police indicated the man who fired the weapon has a tattoo above his left eye and the right cheek. His mother told CNN affiliate KABC that her son had been walking with one of his coworkers when he saw what he thought was someone working on a car. LAPD told CNN at the time that three men were trying to steal a catalytic converter when the victim interrupted them. NEW YORK AP —John Deere says it will no longer sponsor “social or cultural awareness” events, becoming the latest major US company to distance itself from diversity and inclusion measures after being targeted by conservative backlash. The move from the company known on Wall Street as Deere & Co. arrives just weeks after rural retailer Tractor Supply ended an array of its corporate diversity and climate efforts. Both announcements came after backlash piled up online from conservative activists opposed to diversity, equity and inclusion efforts, sponsorship of LGBTQ+ Pride events and climate advocacy. “If it’s so polarizing that people just abandon it, then we all lost.”Legal attacks against companies’ diversity, equity and inclusion efforts have also drawn more attention following the Supreme Court’s 2023 ruling to end affirmative action in college admissions. That doesn’t mean companies will stop their DEI efforts entirely, she added, but they may have to change language or find new workarounds.

Parts of the Northeast were under excessive heat advisories as hot and humid conditions could make temperatures feel more like 100 degrees through midweek, in the latest round of scorching heat to bake the region, forecasters said. The heat advisories in New York City began on Sunday, when the temperature in Central Park reached 92 degrees Fahrenheit, and are in effect through 10 p.m. on Tuesday. The advisories were expected to expand on Monday to most of the New York City region, including parts of New Jersey and Connecticut, according to the National Weather Service office for New York.
