Earendel was first discovered by the Hubble Space Telescope last year. Webb is 100 times more powerful than Hubble, though, and it captured previously unseen colors of the distant star. Those colors reveal that being the farthest star we've ever detected does not make Earendel lonely — scientists believe it has a companion star beside it. Stars as massive as Earendel do typically have companions, but Hubble was unable to detect one for Earendel. Thanks to the Webb Telescope's powerful infrared vision, though, scientists believe they can see, for the first time, a "cooler, redder companion star" beside Earendel.

CNN —A cosmic object in the shape of a glowing question mark has photobombed one of the latest images captured by NASA’s James Webb Space Telescope — and scientists think they know what it might be. The two have been observed and studied by space and ground-based telescopes since the 1950s, but the highly sensitive Webb telescope allowed for the highest-resolution and most detailed image yet. The cosmic question mark hasn’t been closely observed or studied, so scientists aren’t exactly sure about the object’s origins and makeup. The question mark shape could also be “indicative of a merger where these two galaxies are interacting gravitationally,” Britt said.

CNN —Astronomers have used the James Webb Space Telescope to observe Earendel, the most distant star ever detected. Earendel is so distant that the starlight glimpsed by the Webb telescope was emitted within the first billion years of the universe. The star’s name derives from Old English words that mean “morning star” or “rising light.” The Hubble Space Telescope first spotted Earendel in 2022. Webb’s observations have revealed new insights about the incredibly distant star. Earendel is a massive B-type star about 1 million times more luminous than our sun and more than twice as hot.

CNN —The Euclid space telescope, designed to investigate some of the universe’s biggest mysteries, has captured its first glimpses of the cosmos. Investigating invisible dark matterEuclid’s primary goal is to observe the cosmic mysteries of the universe, including dark matter and dark energy. While dark matter has never actually been detected, it is believed to make up at least 85% of the total matter in the universe. These observations will effectively allow Euclid to see how the universe has evolved over the past 10 billion years. As Euclid makes its observations, the telescope will create a catalog of about 1.5 billion galaxies and the stars within them.

CNN —When NASA’s next-generation space observatory launches in a few years, the Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope will expand the search for exoplanets as well as rogue planets, or worlds that travel through space without orbiting stars. Understanding these rogue planets could shed more light on the formation, evolution and disruption of planetary systems. CNN —A pair of rambunctious young stars takes center stage in a new near-infrared image taken by the James Webb Space Telescope. The telescope’s capabilities allow it to peer through an otherwise obscuring nebula, filled with gas and dust, that surrounds the stars. The Webb image also showcases a variety of stars and galaxies around and behind the nebula. The two stars will ultimately finish forming over millions of years, and the brilliantly hued features in the Webb image will diminish as the binary star pair brightens. The space telescope’s peek at this critical moment in the stellar life cycle will allow astronomers to understand more details about how stars form and evolve over time.

Dark matter, invisible material whose presence is known mainly based on its gravitational effects at a galactic scale, would be a small but crucial ingredient in dark stars. Based on the Webb data, these objects could be either early galaxies or dark stars, Freese said. Conditions in the early universe may have been conducive to formation of dark stars, with high dark matter densities at the locations of star-forming clouds of hydrogen and helium. Freese and two colleagues first proposed the existence of dark stars in 2008, basing the name on the 1960s Grateful Dead song "Dark Star." And then you can learn about the properties of dark matter particles by studying a variety of dark stars of different masses."

The awe the image inspires is comparable to how researchers feel about the Webb’s first year of science. Viasat 's stock dropped in after-hours trading on Wednesday after the company disclosed its most recently launched communications satellite suffered a malfunction. The Carlsbad, California-based company said an "unexpected event occurred" while deploying the reflector of its Viasat-3 Americas satellite "that may materially impact" performance. The design of the reflector on the Viasat-3 Americas satellite appear to match the "AstroMesh" line of reflectors that Northrop Grumman advertises. Viasat has previously thanked both Boeing and Northrop Grumman as part of its combined team behind the Viasat-3 Americas satellite.

The James Webb Space Telescope picked up the blast from two neutron stars colliding. The blast, called a kilonova, created the perfect conditions to make space gold and platinum. This particular blast, called GRB 230307A, was first detected by NASA's Fermi Gamma-ray Space Telescope on March 7, 2023, per Space.com. These only arise in very limited circumstances, like when two neutron stars collide.

Venus, the brightest object in Earth's night sky besides the moon, is our solar system's most reflective object, enrobed in toxic sulfuric acid clouds. An atmosphere with water-based clouds, as on Earth, would have been blown away by solar radiation long ago. But they believe its clouds are metallic, a combination of titanium and silicate - the stuff that makes up most of the rocks in Earth's crust. "We even think that the clouds could condense into droplets, and have titanium rain falling in parts of the atmosphere," Jenkins said. More than 5,000 planets beyond our solar system - called exoplanets - have been discovered, many with traits vastly different than our solar system's eight planets.
