Read Your Way Around the World is a series exploring the globe through books. I was born in Salvador, in the Brazilian state of Bahia, and lived in the general vicinity until I reached the age of 15. I already knew something of Amado, not from reading him but because he was an omnipresent figure in the cultural life of Salvador. Salvador was the first capital of Brazil, founded in 1549 as part of the Portuguese colonial project in the Americas. In the Salvador of yesteryear, one would find Europeans, mostly Portuguese and Dutch, as well as Indigenous peoples, especially the Tupinambá.

Why Americans are obsessed with peanut butter
  + stars: | 2023-07-14 | by ( Natalie Rice | ) www.cnbc.com   time to read: +9 min
Skippy was the leading peanut butter brand in the U.S. until 1980, a title that now belongs to Jif. Pond, that became the first brand to commercially develop peanut butter in 1920, sparking the way we eat peanut butter today. "We've launched certain innovations specifically in Asian markets to help enable that type of cooking use for peanut butter. Domestically, Americans eat an average of 4.25 pounds of peanut butter per capita, a figure that increased temporarily during the Covid-19 pandemic, according to the National Peanut Board. As the family came together in the middle of the day, we saw that it introduced this love and affection for peanut butter to children who will hopefully carry that love and affection for peanut butter into [their] lifetime," he added.

In ‘The Lesson,’ It’s a Bad Writer Who Steals
  + stars: | 2023-07-12 | by ( Carlos Aguilar | ) www.nytimes.com   time to read: 1 min
In “The Lesson,” an amusingly taut British thriller playing now in American movie theaters, two novels result from the same events at an opulent country estate. This chamber piece — a debut feature from both the director Alice Troughton, a regular of episodic television, and the comedian turned screenwriter Alex MacKeith — asks, both tacitly and explicitly: Can any creative endeavor be honestly attributed to a single source? One of the film’s writers, J.M. Sinclair (a ferocious Richard E. Grant) is a consummate literary star, who hasn’t published a novel since his firstborn son’s suicide. The unscrupulous Sinclair, however, is about to write the final chapter in a new novel, “Rose Tree,” while staying true to his favorite aphorism, “Great writers steal.”

U.S. equity futures were little changed Sunday evening after a broad-based rally last week that pushed the S&P 500 to its best week since March, and its highest level since last August. S&P 500 futures were higher by 0.09% and Nasdaq-100 futures hovered below the flat line. On Friday, stocks rallied to end the week following strong jobs data for the month of May. "The underlying numbers in the report today show that the Fed can probably feel comfortable with maybe one more rate hike, and then pausing." Or, at least those concerns were true until Friday's explosive rally, when more than six New York Stock Exchange issues rose for every one that fell, and all 11 sectors in the S & P 500 gained. Friday's advance carried the S & P 500 to its highest since Aug. 18, 2022, when the benchmark closed at 4,283.74. Another favorable straw in the wind may simply be the fact that the 11.2% rally in the S & P 500, just since the mid-March lows accompanying the failure of Silicon Valley Bank, is so hated and mistrusted. The Secret to Mastering Your Cocktail Order
  + stars: | 2023-05-17 | by ( Eric Kim | ) www.nytimes.com   time to read: +1 min
Like knowing how to order off a menu, ordering a drink is something that needs to be learned. And finding your signature cocktail is an intellectual endeavor — an examination of yourself and your predilections — as much as it is a gustatory one. It has taken me a lifetime to find My Drink, a slow but steady culmination of all the glasses I’ve had before and all the times I’ve anxiously ordered at a bar. For Hirsch, using “language that you can taste” is a necessary step toward helping people understand what’s in the glass. It’s also, he says, “a good way to build connections between glasses.” And these connections are, ultimately, what can help you discover a new drink.
The success or failure of the Nordstrom Rack turnaround effort could shape the company's future. Those chains such as T.J.Maxx , Ross Stores and Burlington Stores , have opened more stores and wooed new customers, driving higher foot traffic than Nordstrom Rack has seen. Nordstrom Rack stores outnumber the company's namesake stores, with 241 locations across the country, according to company filings. Nordstrom Rack stores accounted for more than 40% of new customers in 2022, CEO Erik Nordstrom said on the March earnings call. As it pins its growth hopes on the off-price locations, Nordstrom has turned Rack stores into e-commerce hubs, too.

Six years ago, the Cornley Polytechnic Drama Society brought its production of “The Murder at Haversham Manor” from its home base in England to Broadway. After the leading lady was knocked unconscious by a door, she was replaced by the stage manager; when knocked unconscious as well, he was replaced by a sound technician and eventually, somehow, a grandfather clock. Barrie’s “Peter Pan.” Many of the same disasters happen chez Darling as happened at Haversham Manor, or close variations on them. Let’s just say that Peter doesn’t fly so much as flail while airborne. He, too, is knocked unconscious.

Pet Shop Boys Are Singing the Blues

Pet parents frequently say on surveys that they would rather cut down on their own food than their pets’ kibble. But the reality of steep inflation is starting to bite even the most generous owners. In February, pet food prices were 15.2% above year-ago levels, far exceeding the 10.1% inflation seen for the human food-at-home category, according to data from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. Year-over-year price increases for pet food started outpacing that for food-at-home starting September, and price increases for the category have proven to be stickier: Grocery inflation peaked at 13.5% in August and has moderated every month. Smucker said on an earnings call last month that its dry cat-food business has seen supply-chain disruptions.
The Cboe Volatility index (VIX) , Wall Street's preferred fear gauge, reached a level not seen since late 2022 and neared territory considered highly risky . To find volatility winners, CNBC Pro screened for stocks that tend to rise when the volatility index gains. This is not normal as most stocks fall when fear is high on Wall Street and the VIX pops. These stocks had a median advance of at least 1% during those months when volatility surged. Its shares have fallen 12% so far in 2023 amidst a 20.3% decline during the past 12 months.

‘Vermeer’ Review: Small Focus, Wide Reach

An installation view of the show with Vermeer’s ‘Girl With a Pearl Earring’AmsterdamWhen the Frick Collection announced plans several years ago for a major renovation, the Rijksmuseum here saw a once-in-a-lifetime chance to borrow its three magnificent paintings by the Dutch artist Johannes Vermeer (1632-1675), which normally would never leave their New York home. Museums around the world and two private collectors also agreed to lend, and a retrospective, the largest ever assembled of the painter’s surviving work, took shape. “Vermeer,” the first exhibition devoted to the artist in the Rijksmuseum’s history, consists of 28 paintings (with one, his magisterial “Girl With a Pearl Earring,” leaving town March 30) out of the roughly 36 known to still exist. Organized by the museum’s curators Gregor J.M. Weber and Pieter Roelofs and designed by the architect Jean-Michel Wilmotte , it is a staggeringly beautiful, brilliantly realized show unlikely to be repeated.
The optimism about inflation and the U.S. economy is quickly waning on Wall Street, and the early 2023 rally for stocks is fading. The market was under pressure again on Friday after a hotter-than-expected reading for personal consumption expenditures, sending rates higher and stocks lower. A recent "Twitter Files" drop revealed deep concerns among Twitter executives about a database that claimed to track Russian propaganda in "near real time." The now defunct database, Hamilton 68, was widely cited by media outlets, including Insider, before it was shut down in 2018. He wrote that based on his analysis, Hamilton 68 "falsely accuses a bunch of legitimate, right-leaning accounts of being Russian bots." Berger and ASD did not respond to a request to provide Insider with the list of accounts Hamilton 68 tracked. Roth also claimed, after reverse-engineering the list of accounts that Hamilton 68 tracked, that they were "neither strongly Russian nor strongly bots."
