Wall Street still loves the ‘Magnificent Seven’

Don't get it twisted: Wall Street's love affair with the "Magnificent Seven" is alive and well. That's a greater gain than what strategists forecast for the S & P 500 as a whole — a gain of 11.9%. This dynamic is seen through the relative outperformance of the equal weighted S & P 500 versus its market cap weighted counterpart. .SPX RSP 1M mountain SPX vs RSP in past month Despite this rotation, Wall Street analysts still believe staying with megacap technology stocks are the better bet. From leggings to lip gloss, there's a dupe for almost any brand-name product. Buying a knockoff used to be a consumer's dirty little secret, largely because a "fake" was considered inferior to the real thing, not to mention the economic cost and intellectual property rights infringement. But brand imitators, also known as dupes — short for duplicates — have elbowed their way into the mainstream and are now even cool. "It's not a direct knockoff, it's kind of revising something that's very chic from a designer world into a more accessible product," Walker said. Even when consumers can get the real thing, nearly 33% of adults intentionally purchased a dupe of a premium product at some point, according to a report by Morning Consult.

watch nowBy most accounts, the rollout of the new Free Application for Federal Student Aid, better known as FAFSA, was disastrous from the start. Even now, some college students don't know the status of their aid awards for the fall. "The Department's poor planning has led to a stunning failure: Some college students might not have financial aid dollars in their hands in time to start classes in the next few weeks," said Beth Maglione, interim president and CEO of the National Association of Student Financial Aid Administrators. Families 'are falling back on borrowing for college'For many families, financial aid is crucial when it comes to covering college costs, which have now crept into the six figures. The share of parents taking out federal parent PLUS loans to help cover the costs of their children's college education has also grown, other studies show.

Joe Raedle | Getty ImagesThe president has no direct control over interest ratesAs it stands, the president exerts no direct control over interest rates. The Federal Reserve sets interest rates, and it operates independently of the White House. Last month, Trump said that if elected he would "bring interest rates way down." Now, however, Trump has cautioned against the Fed lowering rates shortly before the presidential election in November. "I think he's going to do something to probably help the Democrats, I think, if he lowers interest rates."

It has been a decades-long dream of corporate America: making it harder for aggrieved customers, workers and others to file lawsuits against companies seeking compensation for alleged injuries, mistreatment and other harms. Now Uber, the giant ride-hailing company that has been a magnet for such litigation, is pitching a plan that could fulfill that fantasy, at least in one state. The company is seeking to place a measure on Nevada’s ballot that would drastically limit the amount of money that lawyers could collect when they brought successful lawsuits. If the measure passes, it will make it less attractive — and in some cases financially impractical — for plaintiffs’ lawyers to file such suits.

On average, about 30% of U.S. homes in the highest-risk areas for flooding have flood insurance, according to the University of Pennsylvania's Wharton Risk Center. It’s not known exactly how many children in Gaza are unaccompanied or separated, according to UNICEF. Credit card debt is on the rise. Over the last year, roughly 9.1% of credit card balances transitioned into delinquency, the New York Fed reported. The average credit card charges more than 20% — near an all-time high. “With credit card balances at an all-time high and the average credit card rate hovering near record territory, it’s more important than ever to pay down this debt as soon as possible,” Rossman said. If you’re carrying a balance, try consolidating and paying off high-interest credit cards with a lower interest personal loan or switch to an interest-free balance transfer credit card, he advised.

Three times a day my phone pings with a notification telling me that I have a new happiness survey to take. After I took 100 surveys over about a month, that’s not what my results told me. I reported the most happiness when I was eating and the least when I was working. Being reminded that most of my life is obligatory does not exactly spark joy. Rather than just walking one of my kids home from school and contentedly listening to her chatter about sedimentary rocks, I was thinking about the survey’s infernal happiness toggle and where this experience ranked relative to the other moments I had tracked.

I’m not a natalist for economic reasons — though I do think aging societies can create economic problems. And I agree with my colleague Jessica Grose that there is too much panic among natalists about declining birthrates. Sacrificial love is not exclusive to parents, of course, but it flows naturally from decent people when they have kids. It has more promise as a cultural cause, but even then it is often scolding and even malicious. When JD Vance rants, for example, about “childless cat ladies,” he’s not engaged in a coherent cultural argument.
