The Surprising Power of Texting a Friend
  + stars: | 2024-06-09 | by ( Catherine Pearson | ) www.nytimes.com   time to read: +1 min
I’m Catherine Pearson, and I cover families and relationships for The New York Times. Today, I’m making the case for something many of us have a love-hate relationship with: texting. It was from Miranda, a high-school friend whom I catch up with only a couple of times a year. Ample research shows that social connection is crucial to our physical and mental health and longevity. One oft-quoted 2010 study concluded that lacking social connection might be comparable to smoking up to 15 cigarettes a day.

There's a growing dominance of technology stocks in the stock market. Using LSEG, we searched for stocks outside the concentrated tech universe that are expected to reach new highs. Citizens Financial has a forward P/E ratio of 12.1 and five-year P/E of about 15, while Fifth Third's forward P/E is 11.1 and its five-year slightly lower, at about 10.8. Analysts polled by LSEG think shares have about 18% upside potential, and the stock also has an attractive forward P/E ratio of about 4.77, by far the least of the group. Other attractive stocks that could reach new highs include homebuilder Pultegroup and insurance company Allstate .

Exxon and Chevron are the fund's top two holdings , representing 9.73% and 9.27% of total assets in FSTEX as of April 30. Exxon vs. Chevron Chevron came into the year facing production issues in the Permian Basin and cost overruns at its Tengiz project in Kazakhstan that frustrated investors, Holt said. And investors have taken notice of Exxon's lead position in the lucrative offshore oil development in Guyana. Chevron would look very attractive if the Hess deal closes due to the latter's large stake in Guyana, he said. "There's a little concern that if Chevron doesn't do the Hess deal, then they have to go and do another deal," Holt said.

AI data centers alone are expected to add about 323 terawatt hours of electricity demand in the U.S. by 2030, according to Wells Fargo. The forecast power demand from AI alone is seven times greater than New York City's current annual electricity consumption of 48 terawatt hours. The natural gas industry is betting gas will serve as the preferred choice. Coal plant retirements and data centers could result in 6 bcf/d of new natural gas demand in EQT's backyard by 2030, the CEO said. The level of electricity demand could help lift natural gas prices out of the doldrums.

There is no loneliness epidemic

With the report, a steady trickle of headlines about the epidemic turned into a firehose: "Loneliness is at epidemic levels and it's killing Americans" (USA Today); "This Epidemic of Isolation Is as Harmful as Smoking" (Bloomberg); "America's Loneliness Epidemic Comes for the Restaurant" (The Atlantic). There's one problem: The loneliness epidemic doesn't exist. Even the authors caution in their meta-analysis that "the frequently used term 'loneliness epidemic' seems exaggerated." Calling it a "loneliness epidemic," then, may be a bit like calling COVID a "sneezing pandemic." "There are many, many surveys that are just making up questions about loneliness and are not using the UCLA Loneliness Scale or some other validated loneliness scale," she says.

Members of the GOP have expressed their opposition to the guaranteed basic income programs that are popping up in cities and counties nationwide. Guaranteed basic income programs grant select participants cash with no strings attached for a period of time. They are a more targeted version of universal basic income programs, which grant funds to an entire population. In Hudson, a town of about 6,000 people, a privately funded basic income program grants recipients $500 monthly for five years. Even so, some experts say guaranteed basic income won't make it on the federal level because of ongoing problems with existing programs, such as Supplemental Security Income.

Several lawmakers, like Arizona's Gillette, believe that income programs would discourage work and could raise taxes. A recently introduced bill in South Dakota would ban basic-income programs at the state level and prevent municipal governments from creating local programs. AdvertisementDespite opposition, basic-income program participants have seen benefitsPilot income programs have remained divisive with policymakers, but several major cities have seen positive results. In 2020, former Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey pledged $15 million to Mayors for a Guaranteed Income, which helped 25 cities and towns nationwide begin basic-income programs.

Arizona House Republicans unanimously voted to ban basic income programs in the state. They say guaranteed basic income programs are like socialism. In Iowa, Republican state Rep. Steve Holt introduced a bill to ban basic income programs last month, calling them "socialism on steroids." AdvertisementThe bill's sponsor, Sen. John Wiik, said basic income programs are a "socialist idea" during a committee meeting on February 5. For family bedtime reading, we just started “Julie of the Wolves” by Jean Craighead George. Mostly I try to write books that I would enjoy reading myself. But more than a decade into this career, I would still rather spend my time writing than doing just about anything else. It has a lot to do with perspective, which is something we can cultivate if we’re intentional about it. Piecing together a bunch of random scenes until they become one coherent story, like building a complicated jigsaw puzzle.

Litigation remains pending against two other manufacturers named in the 2018 lawsuit, Sanofi-Aventis and Novo Nordisk. The American Diabetes Association says more than 8 million Americans use insulin, which the body needs to convert food into energy. President Joe Biden's 2022 Inflation Reduction Act capped out-of-pocket costs of insulin to people on Medicare to $35 a month, but only for seniors. NEW YORK (AP) — Pornographic deepfake images of Taylor Swift are circulating online, making the singer the most famous victim of a scourge that tech platforms and anti-abuse groups have struggled to fix. Boeing and Spirit AeroSystems are under multiple investigations that probe their safety policies and procedures. Boeing said it couldn’t comment on the reports about what may have led to the door plug blowing off the plane, citing the ongoing investigation. The process also includes tightening fasteners and performing “detailed inspections of…dozens of associated components.”FAA on Sunday also required airlines to ensure older Boeing 737 planes with similar door plugs were secure. The FAA said airlines operating the Boeing 737-900ER model should visually inspect the planes but didn’t require them to be grounded.
