THE HEAVEN & EARTH GROCERY STORE, by James McBrideA few weeks ago, around the same time I was working on this review, I visited the Guggenheim with my fiancé. Her work speaks to a deep curiosity about the interrelation of shapes, things and the dimensions created by those relationships. “The Heaven & Earth Grocery Store,” the latest novel from the best-selling, National Book Award-winning author James McBride, moves with the precision, magnitude and necessary messiness of some of Gego’s most inspired structures. The book is a murder mystery locked inside a Great American Novel. The identity of the corpse is unknown but the few clues found (a belt buckle, a pendant and a mezuza) lead authorities to question the only Jewish man remaining from the town’s formerly vibrant Jewish community.

This year marks the 75th anniversary of one of the most hair-raising horror films ever to hit the big screen: “Mr. Blandings Builds His Dream House.” Adapted from a popular 1946 novel, it tells the story of Jim and Muriel Blandings (Cary Grant and Myrna Loy), a couple climbing the walls in their cramped Manhattan apartment, who buy an old house in Connecticut that becomes a gateway to misery. Tempers hit the stratosphere. James Sanders, an architect and the author of “Celluloid Skyline: New York and the Movies,” believes the 1948 film maintains its power to trigger anyone who has set out to fix or build a home. Blandings” has earned its place in the cinematic pantheon for another reason.

In the 1970s, Tony Bennett’s career and life were in disarray. He was performing mostly in Las Vegas, a declining city that glued him to a bygone era. His music was out of vogue — his last Top 40 single had been in 1965. The rebirth of Mr. Bennett, who died on Friday, ensured that he would remain one of the most revered singers of American popular music for generations to come. Mr. Bennett managed a career resurgence in the late 1980s and ’90s without changing much about his music.

US singer Tony Bennett (Anthony Dominick Benedetto) performs on stage during an invitation only concert at the newly opened Encore Boston Harbor Casino in Everett, Massachusetts on August 8, 2019. "No country has given the world such great music," Bennett said in a 2015 interview with Downbeat Magazine. The evening's performance resulted in the album, "Tony Bennett: MTV Unplugged," which won two Grammys, including album of the year. Bennett would win Grammys for his tributes to female vocalists ("Here's to the Ladies"), Billie Holiday ("Tony Bennett on Holiday"), and Duke Ellington ("Bennett Sings Ellington — Hot & Cool"). He also won two Emmy Awards — for "Tony Bennett Live By Request: A Valentine Special" (1996) and "Tony Bennett: An American Classic" (2007).

Tony Bennett, a singer whose melodic clarity, jazz-influenced phrasing, audience-embracing persona and warm, deceptively simple interpretations of musical standards helped spread the American songbook around the world and won him generations of fans, died on Friday in New York City. His publicist, Sylvia Weiner, announced his death. In February 2021, his wife, Susan Bennett, told AARP The Magazine that Mr. Bennett learned he had Alzheimer’s disease in 2016. He continued to perform and record despite his illness; his last public performance was in August of that year, when he appeared with Lady Gaga at Radio City Music Hall in a show titled “One Last Time.”Mr. Bennett’s career of more than 70 years was remarkable not only for its longevity, but also for its consistency. In hundreds of concerts and club dates and more than 150 recordings, he devoted himself to preserving the classic American popular song, as written by Cole Porter, the Gershwins, Duke Ellington, Rodgers and Hammerstein and others.

Has there ever been a more purely likable pop figure than Tony Bennett? Throughout a career that began in the 1940s, Bennett, who died on Friday at 96, maintained one mission, amiably and unswervingly. Instead, he let listeners — and, in recent decades, much younger duet partners — come to him, generation after generation. Bennett sang vintage pop standards, the pre-rock canon sometimes called the Great American Songbook. He was always unplugged — a simple fact that cannily recharged his career when he played “MTV Unplugged” in 1994.

Former President Donald Trump's campaign has found a new way to troll Ron DeSantis. Top Trump advisors wrote to DeSantis' donors with a list of his struggles. "The numbers suggest, for the first time, that solvency could be a threat to DeSantis' campaign," the memo read, quoting an NBC report about how DeSantis' campaign is strapped for cash. Ludwig says it is due to a lack of intrinsic motivation, willpower, and fear of failure. "Procrastination is not a time management issue. It's an emotional management issue," says Petr Ludwig, author of The End of Procrastination: How to Stop Postponing and Lead a Fulfilled Life. The result is escaping from the stress and effort of a particular task by doing something you know you shouldn't do. "Self-forgiveness" is a helpful strategy in fighting procrastination, says Ludwig.

The amount of mortgage debt rose even more sharply. This would require lenders to fix total monthly payments – of both interest and principal – relative to the outstanding mortgage balance. When interest rates rise sharply, as is happening now, repayments might be less than the monthly interest bill. The amount of mortgage debt outstanding would then increase as unpaid interest is added to the principal – a situation known as “negative amortisation”. Since borrowers always hand over a proportion of their income, mortgage payments wouldn’t shrink when interest rates decline.

Republicans have argued that Twitter had a liberal bias and was quick to censor conservatives. Records obtained by WaPo show how Twitter's management hesitated to ban Trump after Jan. 6, 2021. Twitter ultimately decided to ban Trump on January 8, 2021, following in the footsteps of other social media platforms. However, the safety policy team reassessed their conclusion after internal lawyers, who advised the safety policy team, argued the tweet could have violated Twitter's rules around "glorification of violence," the document said, according to the Post. The lawyers argued that the phrase "American Patriots" could be referring to the rioters who stormed the Capitol, which could then violate Twitter's policy.

DeSantis has since reversed himself, assuring in recent months that Republicans are "not going to mess with Social Security." Tens of millions of U.S. seniors depend on Social Security and Medicare benefits, and that number is growing as the population ages. Strong majorities of U.S. adults across the political spectrum consistently say they oppose cutting Medicare and Social Security benefits. But many others, including party leaders, have bristled at accusations that the GOP wants to gut Social Security and Medicare. "Social Security, I would do the same thing," he added.
