A migrant stands in the Mavrovouni camp on the island of Lesbos, Greece, November 25, 2021. The new proposal would look at allowing the 300,000 migrants estimated already to be living illegally in Greece to work in some sectors, Migration Minister Dimitris Kairidis told state broadcaster ERT. "We need to see what to do with the population that is already in our country, without creating further magnets for others to come illegally," Kairidis said. Kairidis is expected to formally outline the initiative at a cabinet meeting next month, a migration ministry official told Reuters. Agriculture Minister Lefteris Avgenakis said he was in talks with the migration ministry to tackle this problem.

That's more than twice as frenzied as the rush for remote jobs at the beginning of last year. And third, there's been a dramatic slowdown in tech, the industry that supercharged the boom in remote work. The few remaining employers that continue to offer remote jobs have been overwhelmed by the surge of interest. AdvertisementAdvertisementWith so few openings, candidates for remote jobs are being forced to hustle like never before. The dream of remote work, it appears, will soon be more remote than ever.

HARTFORD, Conn. (AP) — A police officer was killed and another was seriously injured Wednesday night when their cruiser was struck by a car speeding through a red light while fleeing a traffic stop in Connecticut's capital city, authorities said. Another car that had fled a traffic stop by other officers smashed into the passenger's side of the cruiser just west of downtown Hartford. The driver of the car, Richard Barrington, 18, of Hartford, was treated at a hospital, discharged and arrested, police said. While officers approached the car, Barrington sped away, drove through one red light and went through another red light before crashing into Garten and Kearney's cruiser, he said. The other officers did not chase after Barrington when he fled the traffic stop, the police chief said.

What Courtney Dauwalter Learned in the Pain Cave

After running for 60 miles through snow, up steep, root-filled switchbacks with thousands of feet of elevation gain, Courtney Dauwalter entered what she calls her pain cave. Scott Jurek won Western States seven times (most recently in 2005) but never once ran as fast as Dauwalter did this year. She beat a 1994 Western States record set by Ann Trason, who won the race 14 times, by more than two hours. Now she is trying to do something even the most accomplished ultrarunners would consider extraordinary: win three highly competitive 100-mile races in a single summer. She has won the race twice and currently holds the women’s record.

One of the paradoxes of urban America is that millions of people speak reverently about wilderness but are much less eager to venture into it and risk real bites from actual mosquitoes. I’ve been musing about this while backpacking with family on the Pacific Northwest Trail, sometimes known as “America’s wildest trail,” on the Canada-U.S. border in Washington State. It’s stunning, mountainous country, right at timberline in the Pasayten Wilderness — yet we have it pretty much to ourselves (along with the bears, lynxes and mountain goats). Yet there’s something still spectacularly right about the United States: our wild spaces. Some 40 percent of America is public land — a credit to our forebears — and we haven’t screwed that up yet (although climate-change-related fires endanger it).

Joanna Barney, a researcher at non-governmental organization Indepaz said she was aware of the deaths associated with conflicts over renewables projects. Renewables - even if ostensibly more environmentally-friendly - are facing hurdles similar to those confronted by oil and mining companies, long Colombia's top sources of income. Wind and solar provide less than 1% - about 300 megawatts - of Colombia's current energy generation. "The projects aren't operating and it doesn't seem like they will start in the next two years," said Alejandro Lucio of Optima Consultores, which advises renewables companies.

Many cell towers have backup power generators but they have limited capacity to keep towers running. Cell service is down. Why cell phone service went downAlthough strong winds can sometimes threaten cell towers, most are strong enough to handle the worst that even a Category 5 hurricane can bring. “When the fires get too close to cell sites, they will obviously burn equipment, antennas, and feedlines,” said Glenn O’Donnell, VP of research at market research firm Forrester. Cell towers have backup technology built in, but this is typically done through optical fiber cables or microwave (wireless) links, according to Dimitris Mavrakis, senior researcher at ABI Research.

Cell service is down. Although strong winds can sometimes threaten cell towers, most are strong enough to handle the worst that even a Category 5 hurricane can bring. The smoke and flames can also attenuate signals because of the particulate density in the air.”If a tower collapses, cell networks could take months to restore. This means satellite phones, which often feature large antennas, can help provide voice, SMS, and data services anywhere on Earth, even without cell service. Although it’s unclear how long cell phone service could be down in affected regions, companies have been able to bring connectivity to disaster regions in the past.

Perhaps it’s the increasingly unnerving letters the story’s traveling salesman receives, including one delivered by a raven. Perhaps it’s the diarrhea and professional failure that befall the salesman when he ignores said letters. And perhaps it’s that the salesman ends up sweating and cornered by a terror, all because he failed to return a library book. Vivid and twisted, ironic and stirring, the varied stories in the collection are told with verve, even when blameless characters meet gruesome ends.

Maj. Joshua Mast, after a raid on an Afghan village, tried for years to adopt a baby he found in the rubble. The high-profile legal battle pits an Afghan family against an American one, and has drawn responses from the White House and the Taliban. The AP has located no records of the birth of the farmer's baby or photographs of her with the family before the raid. Four of the farmer's children had survived, so covered with dust and dirt they were almost unrecognizable, said neighbor Rahim. Less than two years after the raid, Mast helped the Afghan couple and the toddler flee as the country collapsed and the Taliban took over.
