Wonder Land: Surveying the record of his three years in office, Mr. Biden has decided his re-election turns on two events: the Capitol riot of 2021 and Mr. Trump’s efforts to reverse the 2020 presidential election results in several states. Images: Getty Images/Zuma Press Composite: Mark KellyThese columns caught Gavin Newsom ’s attention this week, we’re delighted to say. The California Governor is upset that we reported on the wealth-tax proposal in the state Assembly because Mr. Newsom says he doesn’t support such a tax. Mr. Newsom on Wednesday presented his budget for the coming year, including ideas to close a $68 billion shortfall. He called us “ideological warriors,” “a broken-clock” and “shameful” for criticizing a wealth-tax bill that was getting an Assembly hearing that day.

Since 2022, at least nine states — including six in 2023 — passed laws to impose harsher penalties for organized retail crime offenses, and New York and California could join that list. It's tough to determine whether theft offenses are up nationally, as it's a crime that often goes unreported and undetected. Experts previously told CNBC that laws that increase penalties for retail crime offenses may not actually reduce theft offenses, and could disproportionately harm marginalized groups. "Across our nation and our state, retail theft has surged, creating fear among customers and workers. Newsom this week also called for new legislation that would address organized retail crime.

AdvertisementRigel Robinson, chair of the Land Use, Housing, and Economic Development Committee on the Berkeley City Council, said "the student housing crisis has become the defining characteristic of the student experience at UC Berkeley." Experts said the housing crisis is making the already high student-debt load in the country worse. But with housing costs spiking, living expenses are a big part of the story for many. Darrell Owens, a policy analyst at California YIMBY — an advocacy organization working to end California's housing crisis — noted that the student housing crisis exacerbates the broader housing crisis. "Then what ends up happening is that they spike housing costs for other people."

The US Department of Energy released an analysis estimating how much lithium is under the Salton Sea. Salton Sea has the potential to produce an estimated 375 million lithium batteries for electric vehicles — more than the total number of vehicles currently on US roads, according to the analysis commissioned by the Department of Energy. It's the most comprehensive analysis to date quantifying the domestic lithium resources in California's Salton Sea region. AdvertisementIf the Salton Sea lithium can be extracted, it could give the US the ability to produce domestically sourced lithium, ending the nation's dependence on rival countries for a supply of the metal. AdvertisementThe state of California is also leaning into the development of lithium extraction in the Salton Sea.

While the real world can get kinda depressing, the debate world is always ready to just chatter away. I want to hear your predictions on the Republican set-to coming this week. Bret Stephens: The idea for the governors’ debate was first mooted when it looked like DeSantis could be the Republican presidential nominee. While the Florida Governor stressed his superior record on crime, schools and the economy, Mr. Newsom focused on progressive cultural themes. It has forced union rules, a minimum wage that can reach $20 an hour, highly restrictive land-use rules and strict regulations on climate and labor. California is a generous welfare state—paying out twice as much per person as Florida—with a politically dominant teachers union.

Ron DeSantis said state Republican Party Chairman Christian Ziegler should resign while police investigate a rape allegation against him. DeSantis is running for president, and the state GOP is working to reelect U.S. Sen. Rick Scott. Florida was also key to Republicans winning a slim majority in the U.S. House in 2022, and the party will be defending the newly won seats. Ziegler took over the party in February, three months after DeSantis was reelected in a landslide in an election where Florida was one of the few bright spots for Republicans nationally. "I'm here to tell the truth about the Biden-Harris record," Newsom said in the early minutes of the debate. "It was more of a spectacle than a debate," Akhavan said. DeSantis has also taunted Newsom to "throw his hat in the ring" and run for president in 2024 against President Joe Biden. According to a FiveThirtyEight average of national Republican presidential polls, Trump leads 60% while DeSantis sits at 12.6%. In April, a group of wealthy GOP donors appeared to sour on their support for DeSantis, questioning his presidential prospects.

Ron DeSantis squared off against Gavin Newsom on Thursday night in a pointless debate. It's difficult to accurately say who "won" a debate, but the night didn't go smoothly for DeSantis. No humans died on Thursday — unlike the "Crash at Crush" — but the night was still a trainwreck for DeSantis' presidential campaign from the very beginning. Following the first GOP presidential debate this year, Business Insider and several other outlets called Vivek Ramaswamy a breakout star after commanding attention away from his competitors. Unfortunately for DeSantis, the legacy of Thursday night's debate likely won't be about how the Florida governor turned his flopping campaign around against all odds.

It’s remarkable how fixated Ron DeSantis and Gavin Newsom have been on each other. These two opposite-party governors from opposite coasts of the country have been sparring — repeatedly, haughtily, naughtily — for more than two years. It was there at the start of the debate, when DeSantis, in the first minute of his remarks, managed to mention Newsom’s infamously hypocritical pandemic dinner at the French Laundry. It was there in the middle, when DeSantis brought up the French Laundry again. He noted that he and DeSantis had something “in common,” alluding to the fact that he himself is not making a White House bid.

But “The Great Red vs. Blue State Debate” on Fox News was really a work of speculative fiction. In this reality, maybe Joseph R. Biden Jr., president of America-2, decided to pass the baton rather than dig his fingernails into it. Maybe the former president Donald J. Trump gracefully conceded defeat in 2020 and retired from politics to spend more time with his lawyers. In our timeline, Mr. Newsom is not running for president, though his media ubiquity has spurred speculation that, were an opening to come available, he could fit it into his calendar. Mr. DeSantis is running for president, but he has been losing ground in the polls and supporter momentum.

Mr. DeSantis, the Republican, needs to lift his campaign for president a week ahead of the fourth Republican primary debate and under seven weeks before the Iowa caucuses. With Donald J. Trump still holding wide leads in the Republicans’ 2024 nominating contests, and Mr. Biden resolute on standing for re-election, both men could also be eyeing the 2028 presidential race, though neither would admit it. They have presented themselves as the fresh, new avatars of their respective ideologies and, potentially, the future of their political parties. Now, after they have used each other as foils for years, the debate could offer a culmination to their long-running public feud. The higher stakes for DeSantisMr. DeSantis has much more riding on this moment than his verbal sparring partner.

Gavin Newsom and Florida Republican Gov. Newsom, 56, has talked about eventually running for president but is backing President Joe Biden 's reelection in 2024. DeSantis is betting big on Iowa's first-in-the-nation presidential caucuses on Jan. 15 and could still turn things around. Florida is a onetime battleground where fiercely conservative DeSantis easily won reelection last year, while California is the country's largest Democratic state. Last year, amid some unease among Democrats about Biden’s reelection prospects, Newsom’s name was floated as a potential replacement for 2024.

Ron DeSantis of Florida is accustomed to crushing Democrats in his home state. He romped to a re-election victory last year over a weak Democratic opponent, as Republicans also picked up supermajorities in the State Legislature. But on Thursday Mr. DeSantis will face something new: a brash, confident Democrat, in the form of his California counterpart, Gov. Mr. Newsom, who has feuded with Mr. DeSantis for years, has recently been sharpening his attacks, preparing for the encounter with appearances on Sean Hannity’s Fox News show. For Mr. DeSantis, taking on Mr. Newsom is fraught with risks at a time when his presidential campaign seems to be gasping for air.

It's a high-risk gambit for the Florida governor, Republican strategists said. They insist Newsom could be a presidential contender as early as next year, though the governor has pledged to stand behind Biden's bid. "Ron DeSantis looks forward to sharing the stark contrast between his vision to revive our nation and Newsom's blueprint for failure," DeSantis campaign manager James Uthmeier said in an email. Nathan Click, a Newsom adviser, said his team was "shocked" when DeSantis agreed to the California governor's proposal to debate. The Trump campaign did not comment on the debate.
