“Allowing confidential sources to be ordered revealed means that the public will have less information. Abrams represented New York Times reporter Judith Miller, who spent 85 days in jail after being held in contempt for refusing to divulge a source in an investigation of leaks about an undercover CIA agent. “The First Amendment interest in protecting journalists’ sources is at its highest in cases, like this, involving reporting on national security,” Philbin wrote in court papers. That settlement resulted in a contempt order being vacated against a journalist who was being asked to name her sources. Courts have recognized that journalists have a limited privilege to keep confidential their sources, allowing reporters to block subpoenas in the past.

Abortion rights supporters won an Ohio ballot measure and the Democratic governor of beet-red Kentucky held onto his office by campaigning on reproductive rights and painting his opponent as extremist on abortion. In both states, abortion was the main issue. In Ohio, a ballot measure preserving abortion rights passed in a state that Trump won by eight percentage points in 2020. Abortion rights measures have passed in a plethora of states as some other Republican-run states have instituted new bans on the procedure. Abortion rights may not be a potent enough issue to swing an election on its own.

The sign was covered up Tuesday morning, one day after the Cubs landed Counsell with a five-year deal worth over $40 million. “I give Craig credit for helping to build that, and for adding all these coaches, all of whom have stayed. Counsell told the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel on Tuesday the opportunity for a new professional challenge and the proximity of Chicago made this opportunity appealing. CNN —If you were to dream up a hypothetical case that demanded cameras in federal courts, it would be United States of America v. Donald J. Trump. The importance the coming four criminal trials will play in the 2024 election cannot be overstated. Supreme Court justices, as we’ve previously written in this newsletter, frequently endorse the idea of cameras in the courtroom right up until they get that lifetime Supreme Court appointment. In the Senate, there is a bipartisan proposal to require the Supreme Court to allow cameras in its courtroom. That’s not exactly what we’re talking about with the criminal trials of Trump in the lower federal court, but it does suggest bipartisan openness to the issue of making courts more transparent.

The DVD service was particularly handy when I decided to embark on a career-spanning marathon of all Martin Scorsese’s movies. The most rented movie overall was “The Blind Side” (never saw it) and the most rented TV show “Dexter” (a video store rental for me in 2010). The “Tár” outlier speaks to one of the beautiful aspects of the Netflix DVD. (Don’t sleep on De Niro’s deliciously unhinged performance in “The King of Comedy.”) For all Netflix DVD users, though, De Niro rests at a healthy but comparatively modest fifth place.
