For the first time in a long time, tech workers are in a funk. This rare combination of generous compensation and a reasonable work-life balance kept tech workers happier than employees in other industries. Economy wide, there were on average 6.6 front-line workers per manager in 2018 and 2019, but post-pandemic, the ratio dropped to 6 to 1. It's possible that as tech companies have grown into more complex organizations, more management layers are necessary. Fundamentally, it's about listening to and elevating the voices of front-line employees.

Apple is blaming a software bug and other issues tied to popular apps such as Instagram and Uber for causing its recently released iPhone 15 models to heat up and spark complaints about becoming too hot to handle. It didn't specify a timeline for when its own software fix would be issued but said no safety issues should prevent iPhone 15 owners from using their devices while awaiting the update. In its acknowledgement, Apple stressed that the trouble isn't related to the sleek titanium casing that houses the high-end iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max instead of the stainless steel used on older smartphones. The downturn has affected iPhone sales, which fell by a combined 4% in the nine months covered by Apple's past three fiscal quarters compared with a year earlier. Apple is trying to pump up its sales in part by raising the starting price for its top-of-the-line iPhone 15 Pro Max to $1,200, an increase of $100, or 9%, from last year's comparable model.

But the U.S. jobs picture underscores the "soft-landing" consensus - something Tuesday's updates on global business surveys from last month suggest may not be the case elsewhere. Even though messy workouts of China's ongoing property bust were some relief - as real estate giant Country Garden made some last minute dollar bond payments - the funk in the wider economy clearly persists. That saw the euro fall back against the dollar to levels not seen since mid-June. But that provided little solace to sterling , which was also pummelled by the dollar to its lowest since June. The sour business polls took some heat out of the recent oil price rebound , but did little to calm the long end of the bond market.
