Burps are the top source of methane emissions from cattle. The company this spring began marketing semen with the methane trait in 80 countries. Selecting for the low methane trait could lock in lower and lower emissions for successive generations, she said. Semex is not initially charging extra for the methane trait, said Michael Lohuis, Semex's vice-president of research and innovation. Juha Nousiainen, senior vice-president at Valio, a Finnish dairy, warned that breeding cattle to burp less methane could create digestive problems.

Chris Pizzello/APThis summer, scorching heat waves are helping take the movie box office to new levels. Movie-theater air conditioning is generally silent, powerful and adapts quickly to temperature swings. Within 5 years of the introduction of air conditioning in movie theaters in the 1920s, Basile said, 3,000 movie theaters were forced to put it in just to keep up with the industry. “Before air conditioning existed in movie theaters, summer was considered the dead season.” Not anymore.

Costco is seeking to build a new 241,342 square-foot warehouse in Fresno, California. The facility would replace an existing location and combine ecommerce fulfillment under one roof. This would be the wholesale club's largest warehouse, but shoppers would only be able to access part of the location. Gwyny Pett has been visiting the Kern River for decades, camping there as a girl and then taking her own children, now grown, to splash in shallows so calm they felt like a private pool. She has also seen the destructive power of the river during high-water years. “I mean, this is dangerous,” she said, gesturing at the water speeding past. After a parade of epic winter storms, the Kern River and other major waterways fed by melting Sierra Nevada snow have become wild torrents — a transformation so dangerous that several counties in Central California have prohibited people from entering the water. On Wednesday, a kayaker died on the Kern River, about 20 miles upstream from the campground from where Ms. Pett was sitting.

Americans are increasingly leaving big cities in states like California for affordable enclaves. Indiana towns are offering cash and other incentives for those willing to leave city life behind. One family shared with The Los Angeles Times the perks they cashed in on in Indiana. Other perks include coffee with the town's mayor Chris Jensen and memberships to a golf club and co-working space. It's too soon to say whether the exoduses away from states like California will stick.

Some big landlords are starting to feel the squeeze of stalled rents and increased operating expenses. The main difference between 'big' and 'small' landlords: the financingA key difference between smaller, mom-and-pop landlords and larger landlords is how they're financing deals. While small landlords are typically purchasing single-family homes or multi-family properties like duplexes and triplexes, which you can finance with residential debt, big landlords are buying apartment buildings and have to use commercial debt. With a residential loan, you can typically get a fixed interest rate, which will not change over the lifetime of the loan. "One of the reasons I invest in four units or less is you get 30-year fixed rate debt," he said.

Yannick Kergoat, director of "Tax Me If You Can," hopes the film makes learning about tax evasion fun. The French filmmaker had trouble getting funding and TV pickup for his new documentary about tax evasion, "Tax Me If You Can." He pretends you're in a bar to show you news footage about why the US is the country losing the most tax revenue because of tax evasion. Houser's course included movies like "It's a Wonderful Life" and "Office Space" to teach students about banking and economics of scale, respectively. The repercussions of tax evasion include "incredible increases in wealth for some and constant impoverishment for others."

The "State of the Air" report found that nearly 120 million people, more than a third of the population, lived in areas with unhealthy levels of air pollution between 2019 and 2021. The report assigned letter grades reflecting the number of days that air quality in a specific area reached unhealthy levels on the Air Quality Index. Exposure to unhealthy levels of ozone air pollution makes breathing difficult for more people across the U.S. than any other single pollutant, the report said. Wildfires in the region were a major factor in the increasing number of days and places with unhealthy levels of particle pollution, the report found. The report used data from air-quality monitors managed by state, local and tribal air pollution control authorities in counties across the country.
Getting more money when I was struggling with mental health didn't fix my problems. David Swanson | ReutersPeople have worked for a century to make California's Tulare Basin into a food grower's paradise. The Tulare Basin is at the southern end of California's San Joaquin Valley — and in essence, it's a massive bowl. Before irrigators dug canals and rerouted water for farming in the late 1800s, Tulare Lake filled the bowl's lower reaches. Today, the irrigation system is designed to "use every single drop of water" that flows into the basin, Mount said. Tulare Lake refilled in 1997 and 1983 during very wet seasons.
She set her sights on a job at St. Peter's Health Partners hospital in Albany, New York, and landed a position in the same maternity ward where she was born. Staff shortagesThe pandemic has exacerbated nursing staff shortages and resulted in contract nursing rates surging during successive waves of Covid infections. That amounted to three times the national average for full-time staff nurses. As hospitals have become increasingly reliant on contract nurses, travel nurse expenditures have risen more than 250% since the start of the pandemic. With more than 30,000 registered nurses in its system, nearly 1 in 10 of Trinity's nurses currently work through First Choice.
In 2020, while working as a staff nurse at a hospital in Spartanburg, South Carolina, Aspen Tucker came across a job posting for a travel nurse. In 2020, Aspen Tucker left his staff nursing job to become a travel nurse, a move that came with a significant bump in pay. "I'm able to have a high salary as a travel nurse, but also come back to where the cost of living is low," he says. That month he split an Airbnb with his girlfriend (also a travel nurse who occasionally takes jobs at the same hospitals) in addition to paying his mortgage and utilities back home. When he's traveling work, Tucker pays friends and family to take care of his dog, Skye.

Feb 28 (Reuters) - Bitwise Industries, a tech service provider that trains workers in underrepresented communities, has raised $80 million in a funding round led by existing investors Kapor Center and Motley Fool, the company told Reuters. Goldman Sachs Asset Management (GS.N) and Citibank (C.N) also participated in the round, which brought its total funding to $180 million. Founded in Fresno, California by Irma Olguin Jr and Jake Soberal, Bitwise invests in tech real estate, runs apprentice programs for marginalized communities and sells managed tech services to government and traditional businesses. The company said it supported the training of over 10,000 individuals, 80% of whom have received technical employment. The training program, supported by government workforce upskill funding and tech corporate funding, usually takes about 12-18 months to complete.
Food banks are bracing for an onslaught amidst reduced resources and high prices. The food bank has already been up against high food and gas costs and increased demand. And it's not just the food banks themselves that will be affected but also the programs and partners the food banks work with. "A lot of people aren't really thinking in terms of that, that this is really, really going to hurt some of the most vulnerable populations." And while demand continues, there isn't as much food available as during the pandemic when food banks were given assistance.
Social media, content creation, and lucrative branding deals offer a new path to fame and fortune. Top agents and managers working with athletes on content said it can be tricky to balance with training. Chasing content deals can be a distraction from the sport, and the industry-wide layoffs across tech companies from Twitter to Meta to Amazon mean that opportunities for influencer revenue are facing a slowdown. Fresno State basketball stars Haley and Hanna Cavinder, for instance, have a number of lucrative brand deals under their belts. A lot more athletes may not get deals if they don't have content creation, social media followings, or brand building."
