Canada's domestic spy agency concluded that China interfered in the last two elections, an official probe heard on Monday, the firmest evidence so far of suspected Chinese meddling in Canadian politics. Canada's domestic spy agency has concluded that China interfered in the last two elections, based on the firmest evidence so far of suspected Chinese meddling in Canadian politics. Under pressure from opposition legislators unhappy about media reports on China's possible role, Trudeau set up a commission into foreign interference. "We know that the PRC (Peoples' Republic of China) clandestinely and deceptively interfered in both the 2019 and 2021 elections," it said. "State actors are able to conduct foreign interference successfully in Canada because there are few legal or political consequences.

Virgin Voyages is targeting a new type of traveler: remote workers. In March, the Miami-based cruise line owned by Sir Richard Branson introduced a month-long cruise called the "Scarlet Summer Season Pass." It's essentially four week-long cruises packaged together to appeal to remote workers who want to spend a month at sea in southern Europe. That prompted Virgin Voyages to open additional spots for remote workers on a second cruise ship this summer. Why streamers are shrinking their content libraries
  + stars: | 2024-04-02 | by ( Sarah Whitten | ) www.cnbc.com   time to read: +6 min
Last year many streaming services began shrinking their once-robust content libraries in order to pay smaller licensing fees. In the face of profit pressures and growing competition for viewers, streamers have taken to removing content to avoid the residual payments and licensing fees. On one side is Netflix , Amazon and Apple — companies that agnostically license content from other studios to bolster their streaming libraries. Disney-owned Hulu, meanwhile, has seen success with "feel good" 30-minute sitcoms and prestige dramas, Fandom's data shows. Can We Engineer Our Way Out of the Climate Crisis?
  + stars: | 2024-03-31 | by ( David Gelles | ) www.nytimes.com   time to read: +1 min
Just a few years ago, technologies like these, that attempt to re-engineer the natural environment, were on the scientific fringe. But with the dangers from climate change worsening, and the world failing to meet its goals of slashing greenhouse gas emissions, they are quickly moving to the mainstream among both scientists and investors, despite questions about their effectiveness and safety. First in a series on the risky ways humans are starting to manipulate nature to fight climate change. They are testing whether adding iron to the ocean could carry carbon dioxide to the sea floor. And with massive facilities like the one in Iceland, they are seeking to reduce the concentration of carbon dioxide in the air.

In 2003, Oxford philosopher Nick Bostrom imagined a “technologically mature” civilization could easily create a simulated world. With simulated worlds far outnumbering the “real” world, the likelihood that we are in a simulation would be significantly higher than not. Remember, the simulations would be so good that you wouldn’t be able to tell the difference between a physical and a simulated world. Either the signals are being beamed directly into your brain, or we are simply AI characters inside the simulation. Already, millions of humans are chatting with AI characters, and millions of dollars are pouring into making AI characters more realistic.

Opinion | Is Threads the Good Place?
  + stars: | 2024-03-28 | by ( Pamela Paul | ) www.nytimes.com   time to read: +1 min
Once upon a time on social media, the nicest app of them all, Instagram, home to animal bloopers and filtered selfies, established a land called Threads, a hospitable alternative to the cursed X, Formerly Known as Twitter. The good people of X tried to flee, scattering to the hinterlands of Mastodon and Bluesky, whose distant confines they then complained about on X. It would be Twitter But Nice, a Good Place where X’s liberal exiles could gather around for a free exchange of ideas and maybe even a bit of that 2012 Twitter magic — the goofy memes, the insider riffing, the meeting of new online friends. With many key functions still in development, Threads even had a pleasingly lo-fi ambience. I joined Threads shortly after its July 5 debut as an observer (having fled Twitter well before it X-ed itself out).

AdvertisementWhile Netflix's "3 Body Problem" is a science-fiction show, its name comes from a real math problem that's puzzled scientists since the late 1600s. In physics, the three-body problem refers to the motion of three bodies trapped in each other's gravitational grip — like a three-star system. The three-body problem is over 300 years oldThe three-body problem dates back to Isaac Newton, who published his "Principia" in 1687. Can you solve the three-body problem? Though the three-body problem is considered mathematically unsolvable, there are solutions to specific scenarios.
