Wales miss automatic Euro 2024 place after draw with Turkey
  + stars: | 2023-11-22 | by ( ) www.reuters.com   time to read: +3 min
CARDIFF, Nov 21 (Reuters) - Wales will have to take their chances in the playoffs for Euro 2024 after the country's automatic qualifying hopes were dashed following a 1-1 draw with Turkey in their final Group D game on Tuesday. Needing to beat Turkey to have a chance of qualifying at the expense of Croatia, who were hosting Armenia, Wales made a dream start as Neco Williams fired them ahead after seven minutes. Hope then ebbed further away when Yusuf Yazici equalised for Turkey from the penalty spot after 70 minutes. "We're disappointed we haven't qualified automatically, but I'm off tomorrow to find out who we've got in the draw for the playoff. Turkey improved in the second half though and were awarded a soft-looking penalty when Wales skipper Ben Davies was harshly-adjudged to have fouled Kenan Yildiz.

Transgender cricketer retires after ICC ruling
  + stars: | 2023-11-21 | by ( ) www.reuters.com   time to read: +2 min
The International Cricket Council (ICC)'s decision, made at a board meeting on Tuesday, follows similar rulings over the last couple of years by the global chiefs of swimming, rugby union, cycling and athletics. "Inclusivity is incredibly important to us as a sport, but our priority was to protect the integrity of the international women's game and the safety of players." Critics of transgender inclusion in women's sport say going through male puberty imbues athletes with a huge musculo-skeletal advantage that transition does not mitigate. The ICC said the ruling, which followed a nine-month consultation process and applies only to international cricket, would be reviewed after two years. Australian-born McGahey, who has played international cricket for Canada for more than a year, said the campaign for transgender inclusion in women's sport would continue.

Stengs grabs hat-trick as Dutch thrash Gibraltar 6-0
  + stars: | 2023-11-21 | by ( ) www.reuters.com   time to read: +1 min
FARO, Portugal, Nov 21 (Reuters) - Netherlands' Calvin Stengs netted a hat-trick as they easily disposed of Gibraltar 6-0 in their Euro 2024 qualifier on Tuesday although the Dutch did not come anywhere near to France’s record score at the weekend. Mats Wieffer, Teun Koopmeiners and substitute Cody Gakpo added the other goals for an experimental Dutch side completing their qualifying campaign, having already secured their place at next year’s finals in Germany. Stengs had the Dutch ahead in the 10th minute and added two more after the break, completing his treble with a strong left- foot effort inside the penalty box. The Dutch goal haul, however, was nothing near the 14 that France scored against Gibraltar in Nice on Saturday to set a record in the European Championship qualifiers. They finished second behind France in Group B while Gibraltar ended bottom after losing all eight games, conceding 41 and failing to score.

Italy reach Euro 2024 after tense 0-0 draw with Ukraine

LEVERKUSEN, Germany, Nov 20 (Reuters) - Italy qualified for Euro 2024 after drawing 0-0 against Ukraine in their final Group C qualifier on Monday although the Ukrainians can still secure a spot through the playoffs. European champions Italy finished second, level on 14 points with third-placed Ukraine but with a better head-to-head record after a tense affair that could have gone either way. The Italians ended six points behind England, who had sealed qualification after beating Italy 3-1 at Wembley in October. "Ukraine showed that they are an equipped team and they gave us a hard time," Italy coach Luciano Spalletti told Rai Sport. Defender Giovanni Di Lorenzo then nearly nodded home for Italy from a corner just before the half-hour mark before Trubin pulled off a stunning save to deny Davide Frattesi.

The 20-year-old Alcaraz, who also has won six titles this season, missed out on becoming the youngest finalist in the season-ending tournament since Pete Sampras in 1991. The twice Grand Slam winner bounced back early in the second set but then dropped serve before Djokovic took a 3-1 lead. Djokovic, aiming for a tournament record seventh title, now prepares for Sinner, who beat Daniil Medvedev, and will be out for revenge after losing to the Italian in the group stage. "I knew it was a high intensity match, we've played four times in the last 18 months," said Djokovic, who now has three wins in five meetings with Alcaraz.

Reynolds, whose various interests include co-owning Welsh soccer side Wrexham with fellow-actor Rob McElhenney, last June joined a group of investors taking a 24% equity stake in the F1 team. Alpine said the MNTN logo would be on their cars at this weekend's Las Vegas Grand Prix and at key races in future seasons. "A few years ago, if you had said I’d be bringing together my performance marketing software firm and Alpine F1 Team, I would have told you to get out of my living room -- after asking you to explain what some of those words meant," Reynolds said in a statement. KOLKATA, Nov 16 (Reuters) - Australia bowled out South Africa for a below-par 212 despite David Miller's defiant 101 in the second semi-final of the 50-over World Cup at Eden Gardens on Thursday. Temba Bavuma's decision to bat under an overcast sky backfired and South Africa slumped to 24-4 inside 12 overs before light rain held up play. Australia were accurate with the ball and agile in the field, turning up the heat on their rivals. Miller and Heinrich Klaasen (47) arrested the slide after play resumed with a 95-run partnership but Travis Head's double strike put Australia back in charge. Miller smashed Pat Cummins for a six to bring up his hundred but fell in the same over trying to clear the rope again.

Suarez returns to Uruguay squad, Cavani out injured

Marcelo Bielsa's 24-man list also included fellow striker Edinson Cavani but he has withdrawn after a muscle injury in Boca Juniors' 1-0 win over Newell's Old Boys on Sunday. Mexican club Leon's Federico Vinas has therefore been drafted in as a late replacement. The 36-year-old Suarez, who played his last game for Uruguay in the 2-0 win over Ghana in December at the World Cup, has made 137 international appearances, scoring 68 goals. The striker could return to the top of the all-time South American World Cup qualifying scoring charts, where he trails Argentina's Lionel Messi by two goals with a total of 31. Another record within reach is the number of games played for Uruguay in World Cup qualifiers, currently held by Diego Godin with 65 appearances, three more than the Gremio forward.
