Wellington, New Zealand (AP) – It’s noisy, smelly, shy – and New Zealand’s bird of the year. This year’s victor, the hoiho — its name means “noise shouter” in the Māori language — is a shy bird thought to be the world’s rarest penguin. Aspiring bird campaign managers — this year ranging from power companies to high school students — submit applications to Forest & Bird for the posts. CNN —India’s second nuclear-capable ballistic missile submarine joined its naval fleet late last month, a move the government says strengthens its nuclear deterrent as New Delhi casts a wary eye at both China and Pakistan. The de facto border between India and China, known as the Line of Actual Control, has been a longtime flashpoint between the two. India’s next ballistic missile subs could be years away, however, if history is any predictor of the future. Why Trump’s trade hero turned against tariffs
  + stars: | 2024-09-14 | by ( Zachary B. Wolf | ) edition.cnn.com   time to read: +15 min
Vice President Kamala Harris has lambasted Trump’s tariff plan as a tax, but President Joe Biden has maintained tariffs Trump put in place during his presidency. We used trade policy, or tariffs, as a form of reciprocity, where we said, OK, our tariffs are pretty high. So that’s what led to all these trade agreements, the General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade, GATT, which became the WTO (World Trade Organization), NAFTA (North American Free Trade Agreement) and other free trade agreements that we’ve reached. He began to entertain this idea of reciprocity, of trying to reduce foreign tariffs by offering cuts in our tariffs. How do those tariffs compare with the late 19th century tariffs?

In fact, the Biden administration recently imposed its own set of tariffs, while extending ones first levied during the Trump administration. Take the tariffs the Trump Administration imposed on washing machines in 2018. The washing machine tariffs were part of a broad new tariff regime Trump imposed in an effort to protect American workers from anti-competitive Chinese trade practices. It resulted in what is generally viewed as a “trade war” involving retaliatory tariffs imposed on American goods. The White House gave a rationale similar to the Trump administration when it announced its tariffs.

Workers in Washington and Oregon voted against an agreement that Boeing and the labor union for machinists and aerospace workers proposed on Sunday. The vote was the first full contract vote in 16 years. The tentative labor contract, which included a pay increase over four years, was touted as another win for the beleaguered company. The proposal left workers unsatisfied, Jon Holden, president of the IAM's district 751 and lead negotiator on the Boeing contract, told Reuters on Monday.

In the first college admissions process since the Supreme Court struck down affirmative action last year, Asian American enrollment at the most prestigious U.S. schools paints a mixed, uneven picture. Columbia University — which, unlike the other Ivies, groups Pacific Islanders with Asian Americans — saw an increase of nine percentage points in its enrollment of Asian American applicants, while Brown saw an increase of four percentage points. It doesn’t mean that race is entirely ruled out of the admissions process, however. Poon, who is the author of “Asian American is Not a Color: Conversations about Race, Affirmative Action, and Family,” said that with race masked in the admissions process, concerns around biases are actually more prevalent. And it’s going to be difficult to determine, for example, why there were drops in Asian American enrollment at some schools as well.

Deutsche Bank has some ideas on which stocks investors will want to hold if Kamala Harris comes out on top in November's presidential election. Following Tuesday night's debate , analyst Nicole DeBlase sent a note to clients looking at the themes and individual companies that stand to benefit from another four years of Democrats in the White House. Here's what she likes in this scenario: Residential construction suppliers, which can benefit from more housing support: Lennox International , Stanley Black & Decker , Carrier Global , Trane Technologies and Pentair Stocks tied to a "more cooperative and less protectionist world order": Stanley Black & Decker, Zurn Elkay Water Solutions Electric product and system makers, assuming an intact Inflation Reduction Act: Eaton , Hubbell , Vertiv HVAC stocks, for the same reason: Lennox International, Carrier Global, Trane Technologies, Johnson Controls International Regulation of per- and polyfluoroalkyl contaminants, known as PFAS: Xylem "From a high level, [a] Harris victory would likely bring more support for lower-income households (via housing subsidies/tax breaks) but higher corporate tax rates, less overt protectionism and legislation that limits/reverses climate change," DeBlase told clients. The election is almost universally expected to be close. One measure of economic "misery " appears to favor Harris, using data analysis from research firm Strategas — but only by a narrow margin.

Cooling labor data could still lead the Fed to cut rates by 50 basis points, Goldman Sachs' David Solomon says. "I think the percentage chance is in the low 30s," Solomon said of a 50 basis point cut. The slightly hotter August CPI reading tilted the odds further in favor of a 25 basis point cut. AdvertisementIt wasn't long ago that Goldman Sachs CEO David Solomon forecasted there could be no rate cuts from the Federal Reserve this year. Now, even as the latest inflation data has most investors pricing in a 25 basis point cut in September, Solomon says a larger cut could still be in the cards.

Reuters —American Airlines flight attendants have ratified a new five-year contract with the airline, the Association of Professional Flight Attendants (APFA) said on Thursday. With 95% of eligible flight attendants voting, 87% were in favor of the new deal, the union said. Flight attendants have also urged an end to the industry practice of not compensating crews for the time spent during boarding and waiting at the airport before and between flights. “Among the many improvements, the contract includes a new sit rig for compensation for long sits between flights, and American Airlines Flight Attendants become the first unionized workgroup to lock in pay for boarding,” APFA National President Julie Hedrick said. In addition to industry-leading wage rates, the new labor deal includes out-year wage increases and addresses many quality-of-life issues that the flight attendants have been advocating for, the union said.
