CNN —Eating ultraprocessed foods raises the risk of developing or dying from dozens of adverse health conditions, according to a new review of 45 meta-analyses on almost 10 million people. All the studies in the review were published in the past three years, and none was funded by companies involved in the production of ultraprocessed foods, the authors said. “People who are having depressive symptoms or anxiety may seek out ultraprocessed foods for various reasons such as self-comfort,” she said. jenifoto/iStockphoto/Getty Images“Two-thirds of the calories children consume in the US are ultraprocessed, while about 60% of adult diets are ultraprocessed,” Zhang said. In addition, it’s nearly impossible to avoid temptation, as over 70% of the US food supply is made of ultraprocessed food.

AdvertisementFollowing a diet that mimics fasting for five days a month appeared to reverse people's biological age by two and a half years on average in a study. These factors can be used to measure biological age, the authors of the study published January 20 in Nature Communications, said. While chronological age refers to how many years someone has been alive, biological age is a measure of how well cells and tissues are functioning. On day one of the FMD, participants ate around 1,100 calories, and around 720 on days two to five. Cultivating a sensible exercise habit could achieve the same or even better results, Clancy said, and is maintainable into older age.

In an effort to cook more nutritious meals at home, I ate the same dinner for two weeks straight. I loved the easy prep work, thought my body felt better, and even looked forward to dinnertime. Preparing and eating dinner took only about 30 minutes, allowing me an extra half-hour to do something relaxing and enjoyable each night. AdvertisementBecause I don't track my weight or weigh myself, I can't confirm if I lost a few pounds but I felt better over the two weeks than I did in a while. Overall, I enjoyed the experiment and would try it againI'm glad I experimented with eating the same meal for two weeks.

Whether you should take digestive enzyme supplements depends on several factors, experts say. On its own, the body should produce levels of digestive enzymes sufficient for assimilation of nutrients, Goel said. But when it doesn’t, due to deficiencies evidenced by a stool test a doctor performs, prescription digestive enzymes are the primary treatment. Signs of digestive enzyme deficiencies include diarrhea, stomach pain, bloating, inexplicable weight loss and fatty, oily poop that floats, experts said. Consequently, the only options are to take prescription digestive enzymes or avoid the foods you can’t digest because of your deficiencies.

Read previewWhile you don’t need to count calories to lose fat — and it’s not for everyone — calories always count. Weight loss occurs in a calorie deficit, when a person burns more calories than they consume. Registered nutritionist Angela Clucas told Business Insider three common mistakes to avoid when tracking calories, to help you hit your goals. Rather than exercising to burn calories , exercise to build strength, maintain muscle (which aids fat loss), and improve your health and mood, Clucas said. This is problematic because a) you can’t do anything about the food you’ve already consumed, and b) you’ll likely forget some things.

Artificial trans fats are made when vegetable oil is hydrogenated. They were commonly found in packaged, ultra-processed foods until the Food and Drugs Administration declared trans fats unsafe to eat in 2015. The FDA gave food manufacturers three years to remove trans fats from their products, so most foods no longer contain them.

AdvertisementA nutrition degree didn't stop me from doing fad dietsWhen I was 22, I was so obsessed with nutrition that I decided to go and do a degree in it. I could write a meal plan for someone to lose weight, but I now know it's never about being told. This is Day 1 of Well’s Mediterranean Diet Week. And lucky for us, they’re a main feature of the Mediterranean diet, which is an approach to eating that emphasizes whole, mostly plant-based foods. Whole grains are different from refined grains in that they contain all three parts of a grain kernel: the starchy endosperm, which provides carbohydrates, protein and some B vitamins and minerals; the germ, rich in healthy fats and vitamins; and the bran, a concentrated source of fiber, minerals and B vitamins. When we eat whole grains, the fiber and healthy fats slow digestion, resulting in smaller spikes and dips in blood sugar. Fiber can also reduce blood cholesterol levels, support a healthy gut and lower the risk of developing colorectal cancer, cardiovascular disease and Type 2 diabetes.
