Hamas militants breached the heavily-fortified border in a coordinated assault, indiscriminately killing men, women and children, and taking as many as 150 hostages back to Gaza. LONDON (AP) — Britain’s inquiry into the response to the coronavirus pandemic and its impact on the nation entered its second phase Tuesday, with political decision-making around major developments, such as the timing of lockdowns, set to take center stage. The first phase, which concluded in July, looked at the country's preparedness for the pandemic. An array of experts and politicians are set to testify during the current phase, which is due to end on Dec. 14. The decisions of Boris Johnson, who was prime minister during the pandemic, will be in particular focus. After Hallett's introductory statement, the inquiry heard emotional video testimonies from families who lost loved ones or whose children have suffered long-term physical and mental effects of the virus, so-called long COVID.

NINEVEH, Iraq, Sept 27 (Reuters) - More than 100 people were killed and 150 were injured in a fire at a wedding party in Hamdaniya district in Iraq's Nineveh province that left civil defence searching the charred skeleton of a building for survivors into the early hours of Wednesday. Nineveh Deputy Governor Hasan al-Allaq told Reuters that 113 people had been confirmed dead, with state media putting the death toll at at least 100, with 150 injured. The fire ripped through a large events hall in the north-eastern region after fireworks were lit during the celebration, local civil defence said, according to state media. Preliminary information indicated that the building was made of highly flammable construction materials, contributing to its rapid collapse, state media said. Ambulances and medical crews were dispatched to the site by federal Iraqi authorities and Iraq's semi-autonomous Kurdistan region, according to official statements.

It would not be the first time Ukrainian air defense missiles have misfired. The Ukrainian defense ministry did not immediately return a request for comment from Insider.

Sept 3 (Reuters) - The Sudanese army staged a large scale attack on its paramilitary rival's supply routes on Sunday, eyewitnesses said, as its leader appeared to reject a negotiated solution. The almost five-month war since April 15 has devastated Sudan, worsening hunger, destroying infrastructure, and killing hundreds of civilians. Strikes also continued in southern Khartoum, after a local volunteer group said 20 people were killed late on Saturday in an air raid. Burhan emerged from army headquarters for the first time since the war began late last month, after fierce battles over the army's only other stronghold in the capital. The RSF said on Sunday it controlled part of that stronghold, the Armoured Corps base in southern Khartoum.

July is a hard month for a lot of us here in New Mexico, where thousands of people’s lives were upended by the test of the world’s first nuclear bomb. The people of New Mexico were the first human test subjects of the world’s most powerful weapon. The three-hour movie tells only part of the story of the Manhattan Project, which developed the bomb, and conducted the test code-named Trinity that day in July. It does not explore in any depth the costs of deciding to test the bomb in a place where my family and many others had lived for generations. The area of southern New Mexico where the Trinity test occurred was not, contrary to the popular account, an uninhabited, desolate expanse of land.
