After eight years of threatening to repeal the Affordable Care Act, more commonly known as Obamacare, former President Donald Trump still doesn’t have a comprehensive plan to replace it. People in the U.S. pay roughly twice as much for health care than any other nation on earth. But is it feasible to create a new health care law that reduces the escalating costs? “Right now, Obamacare is the status quo in health care,” said Larry Levitt, executive vice president of health policy at KFF, a nonprofit group that researches health policy issues. Harris has committed to extending the subsidies; Trump has remained silent.

Following Donald Trump’s lead, Johnson has tied a six-month funding bill to the SAVE Act, which would overhaul voting laws to require people to show proof of citizenship when registering to vote. Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., Democrats and some Republicans are pushing for a “clean” funding bill that would keep the government open until December, after the election. The government will shut down at 12:01 a.m. on Oct. 1 unless Republicans and Democrats strike a deal to extend funding. Because of their miniscule majority, House Republicans can only afford four GOP defections if all lawmakers vote. “I’m a firm NO on bankrupting the nation and a YES on election integrity,” Mills said.

France's challenges are far from over, however, with the country facing acute fiscal challenges and an ongoing threat posed by the far-right National Rally opposition, led by Jordan Bardella and Marine Le Pen. France this week asked the Commission to extend its deadline of Sept. 20 to submit debt reduction proposals. Analysts say Barnier's political survival therefore "depends on the whims and personal-political calculations of Le Pen." "The great unknown ... is how far Le Pen will be willing to address the most immediate crisis facing Barnier and the country: the painful choices needed to prevent France from plunging into a destructive fiscal crisis by the end of this year," he said. With fewer than 60 days until the election, investors may feel stressed by the flurry of tax policy proposals. Democratic presidential nominee Vice President Kamala Harris has plans for middle-class tax cuts while raising levies on the wealthiest Americans and corporations. Meanwhile, former President Donald Trump, the Republican nominee, aims to extend tax breaks enacted during his first term and end taxes on Social Security benefits. How it compares to recent historyBut there's a big difference between a candidate's tax idea or proposal and signed legislation. WASHINGTON — Thousands of overseas American diplomats are at risk of a sharp pay cut at the beginning of October unless Congress passes a legislative fix in the coming weeks. And a 22% reduction in their pay would be a needless and demoralizing harm. “The Department of State continues to work with Congress on the urgent need for an extension,” a State Department spokesperson said in a statement. The pay snafu, first reported by Politico, is the unintended consequence of a funding structure that requires action from Congress. With the fate of their wages tied to the funding fight, American diplomats could be left in the lurch.

But broadband companies have been focused on transitioning their customers to other affordable options to help them make up the expired discount, according to the companies’ earnings calls. In the wake of the ACP’s expiration, broadband companies have reported losing some customers. While broadband providers were generally supportive of the ACP, many in the industry believed the subsidy benefitted too wide a swath of U.S. households. During the second quarter, Charter reported a loss of 149,000 internet customers, while Comcast reported a decline of 120,000 broadband customers. Charter has tried to retain its low-income consumer base by rolling out new savings deals like offering ACP customers a free unlimited mobile line for one year.

"But that doesn't take away from the families for whom this was important, and could now lose access to broadband." Pete Marovich | ReutersStill, Sohn believes bipartisan support for the ACP should make reauthorizing it a political slam dunk for Democrats. While broadband providers were generally supportive of the ACP, many in the industry believed the subsidy benefitted too wide a swath of U.S. households. Washington CNN —A six-month House GOP government funding plan cleared a key hurdle on Tuesday, but remains at risk of failing as Speaker Mike Johnson attempts to navigate a shutdown fight with his narrow majority. The House voted 209-206 to approve a rule to govern debate for the funding plan, which includes a controversial measure that targets noncitizen voting. But at least six House Republicans have come out against the funding bill, which is enough to sink it in the House amid Democratic opposition, and the bill is considered dead-on-arrival in the Democratic-controlled Senate. The six-month funding plan from House Republicans would extend government funding until March 2025. Many House conservatives are also generally opposed to short-term funding bills, arguing instead in favor of spending cuts.

Recent reports have said that the US is deciding whether to transfer AGM-158 Joint Air-to-Surface Standoff Missiles, or JASSMs, to Ukraine. These high-profile weapons would give Kyiv a significantly farther strike range than any other Western munitions it has in its arsenal. As is, it still restricts the country from using its powerful US-provided tactical ballistic missiles to strike military targets inside Russia. OPEC+ extends oil output cuts again through November

This isn’t the first time OPEC+ has extended output cuts in a bid to boost crude prices. That same month, OPEC+ extended a cut of 1.65 million barrels per day announced in April 2023 until the end of 2025. Oil prices rose initially but settled slightly lower Thursday. Oil prices have declined this year despite continued output cuts and ongoing geopolitical tension in the Middle East. In June, the International Energy Agency said that a glut of oil supply could weaken the sway OPEC+ has over oil prices.

Fewer Americans want to ban TikTok than did a year ago, according to a new survey from the Pew Research Center. While half of US adults supported a TikTok ban in March 2023, now just one in three (32%) say they want a government ban. The decline in support for a TikTok ban is occurring across party lines. Former President Trump once sought to ban or force a sale of TikTok, but recently flip-flopped on the issue. Vice President Harris hasn't shared a position on the TikTok ban.

In 2023, the World Economic Forum reported that employers expected 44% of workers' skills to be "disrupted" within five years. Another challenge with inserting AI into an organization is that it's often difficult to tell which skills workers possess and where they might need training. Charlotte Relyea, a senior partner at McKinsey & Co., believes that leaders need to plan now so they can better forecast the abilities workers will need. Leaders need to think about this as a transformation — what she described as "painting the picture of the future."
