The Netflix golf documentary series “Full Swing” won’t have full access at the Ryder Cup. “I would say all things involving the team we leave to the team and the captain. I think there’s a sanctity to the team room, and the experience is important to them. Netflix has had extensive access to the players it has profiled from the “Full Swing” series, at their homes and during travel to tournaments. Justin Thomas, another captain’s pick who has taken part in the Netflix series, said it was an easy decision for Johnson to eliminate any source of distraction.

There's plenty of information available about how to reach financial independence and retire early. That's not the route I take with my financial planning clients who want to set a goal to retire early. When our clients want to retire early, we support that choice — and we want to build a realistic plan for doing so. It might not be all you hoped for, however, if you're trying to retire early just because you hate your job. If someone has values like Contribution, Community, and Meaningful Work — then early retirement might be a terrible goal!

A clip falsely attributed to Ukrainian mobile operator Kyivstar and implying that 400,000 Ukrainian soldiers have died in the war against Russia is circulating in multiple languages, but there is no evidence that the company ever released such a video. Users have been sharing the video, which mimics the Youtube Shorts display as well as Kyivstar branding and claims to be the mobile operator’s charity campaign (here). “There was no such communication from Kyivstar, this information is fake,” the mobile operator said in response to a direct message in Instagram from Reuters. There is no evidence mobile operator Kyivstar released a video that mentions 400,000 deceased Ukrainian soldiers, and the company has called the clip a fake. CNN —Scientists have decoded an ancient aroma by identifying the ingredients used in Egyptian mummification balms — and resurrected the scent. The exact recipes used in the mummification have long been debated because ancient Egyptian texts don’t name precise ingredients. The new findings suggest that the relatively complex balms used in Senetnay’s preservation may have been the beginning of a trend of more elaborate ones used later on. Dammar resin, an ingredient used in embalming, appears next to a bottle of the recreated ancient scent. “The scent of eternal life” will be part of an ancient Egyptian exhibit at the Danish museum that opens in October.

Many wildfires in the United States occur when poles owned by utilities or other structures carrying power lines are blown down, or when branches or other objects land on power lines and cause them to produce high-energy flashes of electricity that can start fires. Image Nearly a week after the wildfire tore through Lahaina, state and local officials have not determined a cause for the blaze. Like most other utilities, Hawaiian Electric operates under the scrutiny of public commissioners who have to approve its spending plans. Power lines have caused catastrophic wildfires in California in recent years, prompting lawsuits that have led to multibillion-dollar payouts by the state’s utilities. Hawaiian Electric in a regulatory filing last year detailed measures aimed at reducing the risk of its equipment causing fires.

New York CNN —How many actors does it take to make the movies and shows produced by studios and streaming services? SAG-AFTRA, the actors union that has had 160,000 members on strike since last week, is afraid that artificial intelligence will lead to far fewer employed actors in the future. And winning limits on AI is an issue for the Writers Guild of America, which has been on strike against the same studios and streaming services since May 2. The fight over virtual actors and performancesComputer-generated imagery, or CGI, to create virtual actors and extras is somewhat old hat in Hollywood. “The actors and writers, they’re kind of a canary in the coal mine,” said David Gunkel, a communications professor at Northern Illinois University who tracks AI in media and entertainment.

Striking actors say studios want full discretion over any digital replacements of background actors. It evoked a recent "Black Mirror" episode in which actors on screen turn out to be digital versions. In the real world, members of the actors' union SAG-AFTRA worry that such a dystopian future may not be far off. He said that the studios had proposed to pay background actors for a day in exchange for companies taking scans that can be used to create their digital likenesses. "Any other use requires the background actor's consent and bargaining for the use, subject to a minimum payment."

New York CNN —Actors are set to hit picket lines Friday morning in their first strike against film and TV productions since 1980 and the nation’s largest strike since 1997. This is the largest number of union members to be on strike since 180,000 Teamsters walked out on UPS in 1997. The Teamsters, who have 340,000 members at UPS, are threatening to strike the parcel delivery giant on August 1 without a new contract. The actors also join more than 11,000 member of the Writers Guild of America who have been on strike against the same studios and streaming services since May 2. Actors have used contract talks with the Hollywood studios to assert control over how these digital simulations are used on screen. Such protections, the studios noted, would include gaining an actor's consent to create and use a digital replica, or digitally alter their performance. "So if you think that's a groundbreaking proposal, I suggest you think again." Any other use would require that actor’s consent and bargaining for the use, subject to a minimum payment, the studios said. SAG-AFTRA, Hollywood's largest union, representing 160,000 film and television actors, announced its members would go on strike at midnight.

But cracks in its public reputation are showing, and the company is now facing the uncomfortable possibility that it will remain under attack by Mr. DeSantis for at least another year. How to handle the inflammatory claims by Mr. DeSantis has been a subject of debate among Disney executives. In April, Robert A. Iger, Disney’s chief executive, attacked Mr. DeSantis as “anti-business” and “anti-Florida” for his actions against the company, but he has not spoken publicly on the matter since May 10. (Mr. Iger declined an interview request for this article.) Swatting back at Mr. DeSantis now would most likely exacerbate the situation.

Ron DeSantis is coming to New York for a private presidential campaign fundraiser that's set to be hosted by at least four Wall Street executives, including one with past ties to a firm backed by liberal billionaire George Soros, a frequent target of DeSantis and other Republicans. The event is scheduled to take place June 29 at the swanky Yale Club, according to a copy of an invitation seen by CNBC. It will be one of DeSantis' first fundraisers in the Big Apple since he officially launched his campaign for president last month. Shortly after publication of this story, Ardire called CNBC to say that he was added to the gathering's host list by "mistake." DeSantis is still governor of Florida and GoldenTree has an office in West Palm Beach, Fla.

DeSantis bashes Trump as 2024 campaign swing begins

Trump, the front-runner in the Republican race, recently assailed DeSantis' handling of the COVID pandemic, when DeSantis resisted federal mask and vaccine mandates. "Ron DeSantis is not a serious person who can take on Joe Biden and bring about the Great American Comeback," Trump campaign spokesman Steven Cheung said in response to DeSantis' remarks. It was little surprise, then, that DeSantis held his initial Iowa event in the auditorium of an evangelical church. DeSantis was introduced by Iowa's Republican governor, Kim Reynolds, and was joined by his wife, Casey DeSantis. The nascent DeSantis campaign has been buttressed by a well-funded Super PAC, Never Back Down, which has taken on many of the day-to-day responsibilities of a presidential effort.

Ron DeSantis of Florida will hold a kickoff event in Iowa on Tuesday as he begins a three-state, 12-city tour at the start of his presidential campaign, aiming to win over Republicans in a socially conservative state where he is banking on a strong showing against former President Donald J. Trump. “I got endorsed by 37 legislators there before I even announced my candidacy,” Mr. DeSantis said on Fox News on Monday. “We obviously have a lot in common with Iowa in terms of what Florida has done and what they’ve done under Gov. And I think the groundswell of support has been really, really strong. We’re going to press the case.”His campaign’s decision to hold its first in-person event at Eternity Church in Clive, a suburb of Des Moines, signals the enduring importance of evangelical Christian voters in Iowa’s Republican caucuses.

Simon begins the album in his most casual tone. He’s thinking about time, love, culture, family, music, eternity and God, striving to balance skepticism and something like faith. “I have my reasons to doubt/A white light eases the pain,” Simon sings in “Your Forgiveness.” “Two billion heartbeats and out/Or does it all begin again?”Simon’s songwriting has never been particularly religious. Its refrains return to, and work variations on, the album’s opening song, “The Lord.” As in the psalms of the Bible — which, as Simon notes in “Sacred Harp,” were songs — Simon portrays the Lord in sweeping ways: wondrous and terrifying, both protector and destroyer, sometimes benign and sometimes wrathful. As his fingers sketch patterns, he latches onto melody phrases and then lets them go, teasing at pop structures but soon dissolving them.
LOS ANGELES — Mookie Betts was returning from paternity leave, his car was stuck in Chicago freeway gridlock for what seemed like an eternity and he arrived at Wrigley Field late for that night’s game. The Los Angeles Dodgers knew in advance that Betts would miss the first pitch against the Cubs. And Manager Dave Roberts had put Betts on notice that once he arrived he was going to be playing shortstop for the first time in his major league career — and for the first time at any level in 10 years. So which was more harrowing for Betts, an All-Star outfielder and Most Valuable Player Award winner: the anxiety of being caught in traffic while the game was starting, or playing shortstop in the majors for the first time? Roberts, in his ninth season as the Dodgers’ manager, is known for his superhuman-like communication with his players.

When Pope Francis lands in Budapest on Friday, Eduard Habsburg, Hungary’s ambassador to the Holy See and a descendant of the defunct Habsburg dynasty that once ruled much of Europe, will greet him on the tarmac with a gag gift. “Begin now or do you want to wait for eternity?” Mr. Habsburg, 56, said he planned to ask Francis. But after a career as a zombie-movie screenwriter, cartoon producer, love-triangle novelist, anime enthusiast, sci-fi geek and media personality with monarchic sensibilities, the Hungarian government came calling. OK. That’s the same question I asked,” the amiable diplomat said over coffee in his residence last week in Rome. “You will find respect in the Vatican if you go to Rome, because the Vatican still respects traditional families.”
