They also argue that for-profit dialysis clinics are opposed to these rules because it would cut into their billion-dollar profits. No Prop 29, which is against the amendment, includes Fresenius and DaVita, two of the largest dialysis providers in the state. The state's Legislative Analyst's Office estimates that Proposition 29 will increase costs for dialysis clinics.

Baristas and shift supervisors in at least 240 company-owned U.S. Starbucks Corp (SBUX.O) locations have unionized in a little over a year. More than 110 Starbucks employees have been terminated for minor issues as retaliation for their union organizing, Moore said. No Starbucks employees have or will be disciplined for supporting unions, the company said earlier this month.

New York CNN Business —The Major League Baseball Players Association is joining the AFL-CIO, the nation’s largest labor federation that includes unions representing a total of 12.5 million members. Recently, it announced plans to add about 5,400 minor league players, the majority of whom have signed cards requesting union representation. The announcement was made Wednesday by Tony Clark, a retired Major League player and executive director of the players union, and Liz Shuler, president of the AFL-CIO. The union also won the right to binding salary arbitration for players who haven’t yet qualified for free agency. The MLBPA will join several other sports unions in the AFL-CIO, including the National Football League Players Association, the National Women’s Soccer League Players Association, the United Soccer League Players Association, the US Women’s National Team Players Association and the United Football Players Association, which was recently organized by the United Steelworkers, another AFL-CIO affiliate, to represent members of the upstart US Football League.

California has passed legislation to create a Fast Food Council that could pave the way for a $22 minimum wage. The council would create minimum standards for areas like health and safety, wages, and conditions. "Fast food workers are the largest and fastest growing group of low-wage workers in the state and lack sector-specific protections," it continues. Californian counties and cities with more than 200,000 residents would also be able to establish a Local Fast Food Council. The council's purposes would be to "establish sectorwide minimum standards on wages, working hours, and other working conditions," including training and health and safety standards.

Dancers who work in a topless bar in California are seeking to join the Actors' Equity Association. The dancers had already been seeking to unionize, as Insider reported in May, but Wednesday's press release specifically linked their bid to the Actors' Equity Association. President of the Actors' Equity Association, Kate Shindle, said in the press release that the dancers approached the organization for support. "We like what we do," a Star Garden dancer named Velveeta said in the press release. Wednesday's press release claimed that the club's security guards repeatedly failed to protect dancers from "threatening and abusive behavior from patrons."

The CWA also formed the Alphabet Workers Union, a so-called minority union that does not have collective bargaining rights. For many tech workers, the promise of a generous payday is no longer enough. They also want sound working conditions and assurances that the products they are building will not harm society, tech employees and organizers say.
