WASHINGTON — The House on Wednesday is poised to pass a funding bill to avert a government shutdown next week after it removed a proposal demanded by Donald Trump that would require Americans nationwide to show proof of citizenship to register to vote. House Republican leaders, facing defections within their ranks, plan to rely heavily on Democratic votes to approve the measure. He blamed Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., for failing to take up the SAVE Act as a stand-alone measure in the Senate. “We passed the SAVE Act in the summer, and it’s been sitting on Chuck Schumer’s desk collecting dust; that is maddening to us,” Johnson said. “As both parties work to avoid a shutdown, we encourage House Republican leadership to get this bill to the floor and pass it quickly.

A Democratic group is launching a legal fund to help secretaries of state in key states defend against an anticipated post-election deluge of lawsuits. The group began aggressively raising money and campaigning to elect Democratic secretaries of state, who oversee elections in many states, in the wake of former President Donald Trump's false claims of voter fraud in 2020. It first funneled money to deal with postelection litigation to then-Arizona Secretary of State Katie Hobbs in 2022 to deal with postelection litigation. “We have a bunch of pro-democracy secretaries of state that we want to support. The initial four states were chosen in part because the group believes state laws will allow it to effectively send money to boost the secretaries of state.

The two women with very similar names offer a snapshot of the different surrogate pools for Trump and Harris. The courting of celebrity endorsements is a long-running tradition in presidential politics and one that Democrats generally win. Swift criticized the fake posting, saying it was part of the reason she is backing Harris’ campaign. Even as he downplayed Harris’ level of celebrity endorsements, Trump has tried to use people with celebrity status to appeal to specific voter blocs. Shortly after Swift backed Harris, Trump said she would “probably pay a price” for the endorsement, and five days later on Truth Social he made his bluntest and most direct attack on Swift.

The report also highlights the types of technological issues that are common within massive federal bureaucracies like the Secret Service. Communications were siloed, and the Secret Service "did not ensure it could share information with local law enforcement partners in real time," the report says. The Secret Service released its own internal report last week. Sen. Richard Blumenthal, D-Conn., who chairs the investigations subcommittee, said the Secret Service engaged in an “Abbott and Costello kind of 'Who’s on First?' He argued Tuesday that the Secret Service was "stonewalling" the congressional investigation.

While it was an asset to Biden in polling against Trump, it appears to be a much bigger advantage for Harris. And in this new NBC poll, Harris’ advantage was just under 20 points. It’s obvious at this point that Trump will win men by close to double digits, ditto with Harris among women. But many voters have seen "Vice President Kamala Harris" as a fresher candidate, including those who previously viewed Trump as a better steward of the economy. That would spell doom for Democrats' Senate majority.

The number of Republican women in the House has tripled to a record 36, including two nonvoting members. Others involved in the effort to boost GOP women are also hopeful they can reach a new milestone this year. The number of House candidates has dropped overall since 2022, a redistricting year that brought a surge of new candidates. The Center for Women and Politics found the steepest drop was among Republican women. For Stefanik, the effort to recruit more GOP women to run for the House has been a resounding success.

(For perspective, Trump's 2016 settlements in three Trump University fraud cases totaled $25 million.) AdvertisementTrump has denied any fraud, and his lawyers argue in their appeal that the judgment is unjustified, legally flawed, and excessive. By winning his appeal, Trump would also dodge the judgment's non-monetary punishments, which are many. Winning would mean Trump, Donald Trump, Jr., and Eric Trump would no longer face being banned for two years from running Trump Org or any other business in New York state. By appealing, Trump has kept all of these fraud punishments on ice, with the exception of the Trump Org monitoring, which is ongoing.

Read previewAfter months of having to defend his age, President Joe Biden seems willing to discuss it — and its limitations — openly. Sitting for an interview on "The View" on Wednesday, he subtly acknowledged how age factored into his decision to drop out of the election. While Biden stopped short of pinning his decision on his age alone, he openly hinted at the toll being an 86-year-old president would have taken. At his State of the Union speech in March, Biden simultaneously joked about and worked hard to justify his age. When Whoopi Goldberg, one of the hosts, compared Trump to a bug, Biden slapped the table, miming killing the insect to raucous applause.

MOSCOW Reuters —President Vladimir Putin warned the West on Wednesday that Russia could use nuclear weapons if it was struck with conventional missiles, and that Moscow would consider any assault on it supported by a nuclear power to be a joint attack. The 71-year-old Kremlin chief, the primary decision-maker on Russia’s vast nuclear arsenal, said he wanted to underscore one key change in particular. Russia reserved the right to also use nuclear weapons if it or ally Belarus were the subject of aggression, including by conventional weapons, Putin said. Putin said the clarifications were carefully calibrated and commensurate with the modern military threats facing Russia – confirmation that the nuclear doctrine was changing. Russia’s current published nuclear doctrine, set out in a 2020 decree by Putin, says Russia may use nuclear weapons in case of a nuclear attack by an enemy or a conventional attack that threatens the existence of the state.
