Major infrastructure upgrades meant to protect Florida’s Tampa Bay area from flooding are months away from completion, as the vulnerable region braces for what could be the worst hurricane in more than a century, officials said. Hurricane Milton is expected to strike the Tampa area overnight Wednesday and into Thursday morning with life-threatening storm surge of up to 15 feet, said Austen Flannery, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service’s Tampa office. Since then, the region’s population has grown from roughly 400,000 people to 3.8 million, and the number of buildings has either tripled or quadrupled, according to the Tampa Bay Regional Planning Council. As Hurricane Milton barrels toward Tampa Bay, some residents are saying that the resources needed to evacuate — especially gasoline — are in short supply, despite a mandate to leave the area. Debris from Helene also poses a risk as Milton approaches because the objects can turn into dangerous projectiles. On social media, lines stretching around the block could be seen at the few gas stations in the greater Tampa Bay area that still had fuel. Hurricane Helene had already damaged her family home and she assumes more, if not total damage, will be wrought by Milton. “What’s really sad is seeing people pulling up to gas stations and just staring at pumps that are out of gas,” she said.

Nearly 16% of gas stations in Florida had run out of fuel as of late morning Tuesday as people flee north to escape the path of Hurricane Milton, according to data from GasBuddy. About 1,200 of the state's 7,900 gas stations are currently without fuel, according to the data. The storm is forecast to remain "an extremely dangerous hurricane" through landfall in Florida, according to the forecasters. Gas stations are running out of fuel and lines are long but there is not a shortage in the state, DeSantis said. Terminals with power, however, could begin distribution of fuel Saturday and Sunday depending on worker and truck driver availability as well as whether local gas stations are working, he said.

Gas price tracking service GasBuddy reported that as of Tuesday morning, 14.5% of gas stations statewide were without fuel, a dramatic spike from just 3% on Monday. DeSantis said 27 fuel trucks were escorted by the Florida Highway Patrol to deliver fuel to stations in the anticipated impact area of the storm. “We have been dispatching fuel over the past 24 hours as gas stations have run out,” he said at a press conference early Tuesday. And the real fear is that the hurricane and storm surge could cause significant damage to the port.

Previously, voters were limited to dropping absentee ballots off at the board of elections or early voting sites in their counties. Some of the planned voting sites are being used as shelters and warehouses for incoming sites, state officials said, while others were damaged or made inaccessible by the storm. The state’s voter registration deadline of Friday was not extended. South Carolina extended its voter registration deadline to Oct. 14, while Georgia officials say election operations are expected to continue smoothly.
