Mary Riche, 76, is a devoted member of the Democratic Party faithful. She isn’t an elected politician or a highly paid party operative, but a loyal part of the rank and file who has supported state and national Democrats since the 1970s, hosted fund-raisers in her Iowa home and enthusiastically knocked on doors for candidates. On Thursday night during the first presidential debate of the campaign, she was watching television and texting with her “posse,” a close circle of Democratic friends. “Finally, I just posted the crying emoji,” she said in a coffee shop in Des Moines on Friday. “I was embarrassed that my candidate was appearing as if he was incoherent.

Nurphoto | Getty ImagesWith just days to go until France's snap parliamentary election kicks off, victory for the far right looks increasingly likely in the first phase of the two-stage runoff. But predicting the outcome of France's final vote on July 7 is less clear-cut, given the complexity of France's voting system. Voter turnout for the national election is also expected to be larger — and therefore more representative — than the 51% who cast their ballot in the EU vote. With that in mind, analysts see a 30% to 40% chance of the National Rally winning the 289 seats needed to secure an absolute majority in the 577-seat National Assembly. A majority government for either the far-right or the ultraleft alliance, meanwhile, could spark a far more dramatic outcome.

Paris CNN —True to his theatrical form, Thom Browne’s fall 2024 couture show opened with spectacle. The collection featured couture made from muslin "toiles" as well as intricate embroidery and needlework in gold, silver and bronze. Thom Browne (which has, since 2018, been part of Zegna group who own a 90% stake) is also a ready-to-wear business currently offered in over 300 department-stores and boutiques across 40 countries, as well as in 110 Thom Browne retail stores. “I like to entertain and to ground it in beautifully made clothes.”"The work in progress becomes the final work... Couture," wrote Thom Browne in their show notes, of the decision to use toile in the collection. In 2021, Chris Gloninger, a television weatherman in Boston with a passion for climate science, was approached with an intriguing prospect. Would he consider a job as chief meteorologist at a television station in Des Moines? The station, KCCI, wanted to amp up climate coverage, Mr. Gloninger said he was told, not least because agriculture was so important in the state. In announcing Mr. Gloninger’s hiring to the newsroom, Ms. Smith highlighted his extensive climate coverage. “My big takeaway was that there’s going to be a lot of climate involved,” said Mr. Serwe, now a meteorologist at KSTP in St. Paul, Minn.

CNN —Allegations that three boys gang-raped a 12-year-old Jewish girl in northern France have triggered an outcry over surging antisemitism in the country, a key issue in the looming French parliamentary elections this month. The Nanterre prosecutor’s office announced Wednesday that it has launched an inquiry into the alleged “aggravated rape” of a minor, after receiving “reports from a 12-year-old girl” of the incident on June 15. The third boy has been placed under “assisted witness” status in relation to the alleged rape, the prosecutor added. The alleged attack took place as the girl tried to return home after meeting a friend. Protesters carried placards with slogans such as “Raped at 12 because she was Jewish,” and “Anti-Semitism is not residual,” and listened to speeches from Jewish rights activists in attendance.

TV Weather Gets Political

Climate change is now squarely part of the American culture wars, and heat waves and flash foods have become fodder for partisan squabbling. Nowhere is this tension more acute than in the weather departments of local TV stations. As extreme weather becomes more commonplace and climate change raises temperatures around the globe, it is becoming increasingly difficult for the nation’s roughly 2,000 television meteorologists to stay above the fray. An award-winning TV weatherman, Gloninger moved to Iowa in 2021 to take the job of chief meteorologist at KCCI, the CBS affiliate in Des Moines. His new bosses were explicit: They wanted him to talk about climate change.
