Paraguay's president Santiago Pena addresses the 78th Session of the U.N. General Assembly in New York City, U.S., September 19, 2023. Pena has criticized the progress of talks between the two trade blocs since before he took office in August. The deal between Mercosur - the trade bloc composed of Argentina, Brazil, Paraguay and Uruguay - and the EU hit snags in 2019 after a so-called side letter from the EU requiring environmental safeguards. Lula, as well as EU Ambassador to Paraguay Javier Garcia de Viedma, have said they believe an EU-Mercosur deal was feasible by the end of 2023. "I think we are very close," Garcia de Viedma told reporters on Monday.

And opera needs works like “10 Days,” which treats the medium with affection and respect while also chafing at its tropes throughout history. For this is an opera that jerks between beauty and terror — seamlessly under the baton of Daniela Candillari, leading an ensemble of about a dozen instrumentalists. The patients (members of Opera Philadelphia Chorus, led by Elizabeth Braden) can sing the same hymn with serenity in one scene and chaotic dissonance in the next, with few indications of which is the truer rendition. The most tragic of the patients is Lizzie (the mezzo-soprano Raehann Bryce-Davis, who sings with a lush and moving elegance that would make her ideal for mid-20th century American opera). Her repetitive ramblings come into logical focus with a long, crushing aria about the death of her daughter.

Yen under pressure as U.S. Treasury yields push over-decade peaks

A bundle of Japanese 10,000 yen banknotes on a tray arranged at a branch of Resona Bank Ltd. in Tokyo, Japan. The yen was held at the mercy of soaring U.S. Treasury yields on Friday ahead of a closely watched rate decision by the Bank of Japan, or BOJ, while the dollar stood near a six-month peak on the prospect of higher-for-longer U.S. rates. The Japanese currency was last marginally lower at 147.6 in early Asia trade, languishing near the previous session's more than 10-month low of 148.465. The yen was also kept under pressure as a result of elevated U.S. Treasury yields, which scaled multi-year highs in the previous session as markets reeled from a hawkish pause by the Federal Reserve on Wednesday. The U.S. dollar likewise rode Treasury yields higher and against a basket of currencies, the greenback touched a more than six-month high of 105.74 in the previous session.

“The idea of the hysterical woman trope really does persist today,” the soprano said ahead of Thursday night’s premiere of Rene Orth’s musical adaptation at Opera Philadelphia. An all-woman creative team was commissioned to develop the work by Opera Philadelphia and Toronto’s Tapestry Opera. “I have a lot to say about women’s rights being taken away and how women are treated,” director Joanna Settle explained. Bryce-Davis views Roosevelt Island quite differently following her immersion in the traumatic story. “My sister lives on Roosevelt Island and so whenever I’m in New York, that’s where I am,” she said.

Moscow aims to disrupt Ukraine's ability to export grain to world markets with a sustained campaign of attacks targeting Ukrainian Danube ports, and has attacked the port of Izmail four times this week, Ukrainian officials say. Across from Izmail, pieces apparently from a drone were found near the Romanian village of Plauru, Romanian Defense Minister Angel Tilvar said Wednesday. “In the first phase (of the war) things were calmer, but now it has come to our territory,” she said. “We are worried because nobody can guarantee that (a drone) won’t fall on our side of the river,” he said. Beyond trying to calm us down, the authorities can’t do much about it.”___Stephen McGrath reported from Sighisoara, Romania.

Moscow has conducted long-range air strikes on targets in Ukraine since the start of its invasion last year. The Romanian Defence Ministry said Romania was not hit. "We heard the drones, the booms and the air defence systems across the river," she told Reuters by telephone. But Mr. Carter and his family were able to see it differently. After a series of short hospital stays, this winter Mr. Carter made what for so many is an impossible decision. It would have been easy for him to obfuscate the truth of his medical condition, but Mr. Carter had no interest in doing so. When it came to the transition to hospice care, Mr. Carter was no different. “This is intentional,” Mr. Alter noted.

Sanchez and Bezos have been galavanting across Europe this summer aboard the Amazon founder's $500 million megayacht, and Sanchez has packed a variety of 'loud luxury' pieces. Instead of donning neutral color palettes and label-less attire, two crucial components of quiet luxury dressing, Sanchez's summer Yacht style has included an array of colorful and flashy ensembles that broadcast brand names. Paraguay's President-elect Santiago Pena speaks during an interview with Reuters ahead of his inauguration, in Asuncion, Paraguay August 7, 2023. His party's diplomatic support for Taiwan has hurt local farmers' grains exports to China, which claims sovereignty over the self-governed island. Taiwan Vice President William Lai is in Paraguay for Pena's inauguration. Relations with the United States will also be in focus after the U.S. government accused Pena's political backer, former President Horacio Cartes, of corruption. Pena also wants to create 500,000 new jobs in five years to boost the South American country's farm-driven economy, dominated by soybeans and beef.
