A California driver was charged with fatally mowing down a man whom she accused of trying to run over a cat, authorities said Wednesday. Hannah Star Esser, 20, was charged with murder and is being held on $1 million bail in the Sept. 25 encounter in Cypress, a Southern California suburb southeast of Los Angeles, the Orange County District Attorney’s Office said in a statement. Prosecutors say Esser confronted Luis Anthony Victor, 43, because she believed he was trying to hit a cat with his car. In a statement, Orange County District Attorney Todd Spitzer described the killing as a "random act of violence targeting a stranger." She is scheduled to be arraigned Oct. 13 and could face 25 years to life in prison.
Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen will be touting tax credits and other private sector incentives passed in the Inflation Reduction Act in North Carolina this week, saying they will help low energy costs for consumers and greenhouse gas emissions across the U.S. But Yellen says the government will also rely on the private sector to help meet its climate goals by reducing emissions by at least half from 2005 levels in 2030. "Specifically, government must provide the basic foundations and long-term certainty that businesses need to invest at scale and drive the transition toward a clean energy future," Yellen will say. The legislation will spur "a significant mobilization of private investment into the clean energy sector," according to her remarks. "Combined with the business tax credits, this investment is expected to further push down the costs of clean energy production.
A man accused of killing his co-worker’s family in their Texas home more than eight years ago was arrested over the weekend after he arrived at San Francisco’s airport from China, officials said. Similar to what he told the FBI, Lu told sheriff's office investigators he didn't know where the Sun family lived until he saw news coverage of their deaths. Authorities also interviewed Lu’s wife. The sheriff’s office said there were inconsistencies between her version and Lu’s versions of what happened. The Harris County Sheriff’s Office said the investigation continues.
