Like many others, fund manager Jim Golan has made a fortune from mega-cap growth stocks. For the last 19 years, Golan has logged consistently solid returns as manager of the $2.2 billion William Blair Large Cap Growth Fund (LCGNX). Large, high-quality growth stocks have been in vogue since the early 2010s, though that doesn't explain why Golan's fund has excelled versus its peers. How to invest in large growth stocks — and 4 top picksTo impress Golan, stocks must have scale or other structural advantages that lead to success over his three- to five-year investing horizon. Below are four companies the leading fund manager is especially bullish about, along with the ticker, market capitalization, sector, and thesis for each.

Its towering smokestacks once puffed out clouds of steam. In gigantic machine rooms, turbines whirled around the clock. In the Soviet era, the Kurakhove Heating and Power Plant gave rise to the town around it in Ukraine’s east, driving the local economy and sustaining the community with wages and heating for homes. “Our plant is the heart of our city,” said Halyna Liubchenko, a retiree whose husband worked his entire career in nearby coal mines that fed the facility. That heart is barely beating now, partly destroyed by artillery.

The crush of people at the rally was suffocating, although in India a crowd is no index of popularity. At 53, with a well-salted beard and serious eyes, he’s too old to be called Congress’s “scion,” but he still wears the sheen of dynasty. Then, on the heels of several corruption scandals, the mighty party — 140 years old next year — came unstuck. One of Modi’s successes has been not just to trounce the Congress Party but also to persuade people that the party has weakened India and emasculated its Hindus. (Amnesty itself halted its work in India in 2020, in the midst of what it later called an “incessant witch hunt” by the government.)

Bernadette Joy started her money coaching side hustle because she wanted to work fewer hours per week — not more. In 2019, Joy was running a Charlotte, North Carolina-based business called Dressed, rented out bridesmaid dresses. She initially loved running her own business, but the experience stopped being fulfilling, she says. Joy works 20 hours per week from Mondays through Wednesdays, leaving her enough free time to sleep, travel and take hip-hop dance classes. I don't want to work all the time," Joy, 39, said during a recent CNBC Make It panel at SXSW.

AdvertisementFor years, Netflix investors cared about one thing more than anything else: Go-go growth, which they measured by the number of subscribers the streaming company signed up. To push that point across, last year, Netflix stopped providing quarterly guidance on subscriber growth. But it's also understandable if investors think Netflix is going to stop providing subscriber numbers because the numbers aren't going to be as impressive in the future. Today, Netflix has nearly 270 million paid subscribers around the world, which makes it much, much bigger than its peers. AdvertisementThat's why Netflix's admission that it lost a million subscribers two years ago shook the entire media world and had everyone asking — was that a Netflix problem or a Streaming problem?

CNN —Georgia’s government is attempting to force through a controversial “foreign agent” law, despite international condemnation and huge protests from its citizens. Critics of the law say is it is a Kremlin-inspired effort to undermine democracy which will damage Georgia’s bid to join the European Union. The ruling Georgian Dream party first tried to pass the bill 13 months ago, but was forced into an embarrassing climbdown following a week of intense protests. Nearly 80% of Georgians support European integration, according to a poll conducted in December by the National Democratic Institute. Since Russia invaded Ukraine in February 2022, thousands of Russians – especially men of service age – have fled to Georgia to avoid conscription.

Speaker Mike Johnson on Wednesday told Republicans that the House would vote Saturday evening on his foreign aid package for Israel and Ukraine, pushing through resistance in his own party to advance a long-stalled national security spending package for U.S. allies. His announcement came amid a crush of opposition from Republicans who are vehemently against sending more aid to Ukraine, and have vented for days as congressional aides race to write the legislation Mr. Johnson proposed on Monday. The move was a nod to ultraconservatives who have demanded that the speaker not advance aid to Ukraine without securing sweeping concessions from Democrats on immigration policy. The legislative package Mr. Johnson is trying to advance roughly mirrors the $95 billion aid bill the Senate passed two months ago with aid to Ukraine, Israel, Taiwan and other American allies, but he has proposed breaking that package into three pieces that would be voted on individually. There would be a fourth vote on a separate measure containing other policies popular among Republicans, including conditioning Ukraine aid as a loan and a measure that could lead to a nationwide TikTok ban.

Limerence is more obsessive than a regular crushCrushes, even if ultimately unrequited, are usually at least somewhat fun, Taylor said. Coworker limerence, for example, can act as an intense distraction from other issues at work (or outside of it). US stocks could be stuck in quicksand for the rest of 2024 despite robust earnings growth, but investors shouldn't panic. Wall Street expects double-digit earnings growth in 2024. The consensus estimate for S&P 500 profits is about $244, which would be up from $220 in 2023. The so-called SMID-cap cohort lagged its larger peers again in the first quarter, posting a solid 7.6% total return, while the S&P 500 surged 10.6%, including dividends. Six sell-side research analysts cover the typical stock in the SMID-cap S&P 1000 index compared to 17 analysts for the average S&P 500 member, Belski wrote.

When I went sober six years ago, dating and getting laid was the last thing on my mind. After all, I'd gone sober for a reason: to self-optimize, and I couldn't do that with a man snoring in my ear. It felt like alcohol and I had always been in an open relationship, but now it was time for me to fly solo. Office crushes, in all their mercurial glory and pain, continue to shape our working lives in deeply meaningful ways. But through all these changing norms, workplace crushes remain remarkably common. An analytics app Meta acquired a decade ago turned into a major source of inspiration for product and business decisions, including its work to "clone" Snapchat. Rosen is Meta's chief information security officer, while Tiger was vice president of engineering until he left Meta in 2022. For several years, Onavo was key to how Meta decided to acquire, launch, and change its products, according to over a dozen court documents unsealed last week in an ongoing lawsuit. After the acquisition, Facebook found through Onavo's data on messaging apps that Snapchat was a top five mobile app and WhatsApp had begun to outpace Facebook Messenger. The company was hailed for its tech that compressed data on mobile phones, allowing apps to run in the background without eating up user data.

CNN —House Speaker Mike Johnson is pledging to act on Ukraine aid when lawmakers return to Washington next week, but behind the scenes the Louisiana Republican is still undecided on the best path forward and keenly aware of his narrow majority and the threat to his speakership that looms. “He’s got a gun to his head right now,” Rep. Don Bacon, a swing-district Republican, said of the speaker. Greene and Johnson are expected to talk later this week, but the Georgia Republican has remained steadfast in her opposition to Ukraine aid. Given fierce conservative opposition and a narrow margin, it’s possible Johnson could need to bring any Ukraine aid bill to the floor under a suspension of the rules. In recent days, Johnson has also floated the idea of easing natural gas exports, but it’s not clear that would do much to assuage conservative backlash against Ukraine aid.

They don't replace the tech giants — they just get bought by the tech giants. A new paper by two leading scholars suggests that these days, Big Tech doesn't have to resort to buyouts to crush aspiring startups. At this point, Big Tech looks at promising startups the way evil alien empires in science fiction look at helpless planets. The data that Big Tech shares — or doesn't share — can play an instrumental role in shaping a startup's work. Finally, the big companies use their clout on Capitol Hill in an effort to impose stricter regulations on the startups they're ostensibly trying to help.
